How much is it normally ?

    • +2

Cheapest it usually gets is 40USD, but normally 45USD.

    • US$45 with the worst ship.
      Wild pricing for better ships.

It is only temporary free access event, no permanent account unlock.

  • How large is the download? :)

    • I think it was about 40gb, but could be completely wrong.

    • +2

      87 GB on disk.

  • +8

    This grift is still going?!?

    • +4

Meh, I played during these free weeks for about a year then finally pulled the trigger on the 40USD game, because I was enjoying myself and couldn't find another game that felt the same.

You'd be an idiot to spend any more than that given the bugs, and the fact you can literally get everything by playing the game. It's ridiculous those $1000 packages.

      • I hear Spacebourne 2 is doing good things and it's being developed by just one dude. I read that it's janky but has a lot of similarities with Star Citizen.

        • +1

Its set in space… after that the similarities stop.

    • +1

From my maybe 300 hours playing it I would say it is pretty rare.

    • I would feel bad putting in my referral code for this scam.

  • Still waiting for V1.0

    • +4

Make sure you're ignoring the Hungry Jacks deals because you're going to need the longest lifespan you can get waiting for that.

    • Not quite as bad as this, but Gloria Victis went into early access in 2016. It only "launched" this year in 2023.

  • +3

Hasn't this game been in development since 2011? i.e. 12 years now?

    • +1

Yes, but it's kind of funny to login and look at what they have achieved with half a billion $US of crowdfunding.
      (Hint: not much)

    • yea theres a reason for this check my post

  • stupid question but is there any FPS or just flying?

    • i mean any fps yet? as i have seen footage.

      • +2

Yeh heaps of first person stuff in there these days.
Bored Gamer on youtube always has a good roundup of upcoming features. The game seems to be finally coming together and new stuff being added all the time. Still only one system so far mind you, but its pretty damn detailed..

Yes plenty, but so janky it's not very enjoyable FPS experience.

My 2 cents about those thinking of trying this game:

    • You need a fairly decent PC, not so much on GPU but a high end CPU and 32GB or RAM or more make a lot of difference. SSD is an absolute must.
    • Be ready to deal with bugs, it is a bug simulator:
      • Inventory, star map, interactive panels… all of those things will constantly take 2 or 3 attempts before they work.
      • Elevators are the most dangerous threat in the game.
      • If see a void like the floor missing or and entire train station is not rendered… just wait a few seconds, look around, server is shy, it will appear at some point.

Apart from that the game is gorgeous, ton of things to do, everything in the world is simulated and persistent, making it a game with a unique immersion. It is fun to just explore, it is huge. Do delivery missions. Do exploring missions. Do bunker missions. Do mining. Do bounty hunting. Help others from getting stuck?

    Top 2 Star Citizen jargon:
    - 30K: game runs with a constant client to server sync, if server dies, all users will see the 30000 error and have to disconnect.
    - o7: equivalent to "may the force be with you" in Star Citizen.

I put in a few hours during the last free weekend. It's hard to look past the bugs as I hit so many, and it ran like complete garbage. The world also just feels really empty.

Some important info for those considering playing SC

Do not buy anything but the base game and base ship package. Almost all ships can be bought in game with game credits and the main gameplay loop is earning that money. Don't even consider preordering anything.

The current free play is because the game is so broken very few of the regulars are playing it.

You need a beefy computer and accept you are testing a game.

I've had a great time playing it last year with some friends so there is fun to be had.

  • Is the game difficult to get into? Long tutorials before you can start doing delivery/mining missions? Wouldn't mind giving this a try don't want to spend me evenings learning how to play the game ideally.

    • +1

I initially watched 15-30 mins of youtube vids just to get the absolute basics, then people in the chat are super helpful from there.

But I'm also usually a console gamer so might have been more of a learning curve for me.

  • imma cut the bullshit here

    starcitizen is basically a scam,

business strategy works on the principle that they can deliver content that is so badly broken but have a silver bullet excuse mentioning that it is an “alpha” game.

They have literally done this for a decade. It’s the same complaints and same responses.

It will literally never be out of alpha. No structure to be built to become a full game. And they know if they make it a full game they will actually make less money, together with all the bugs that would destroy the game, or spend too many resources fixing the bugs. They are selling a false hope fantasy, and enough people are falling for it to make a silly amount of profit.

If you also look closely into the community it is obvious they they pay a lot of content creators and players to make positive impact even when things are so in the opposite and totally broken. There are always posts or youtube videos trying to flip updates or events that are clearly disasters and a complete flop and somehow conclude that it’s “progress” or “still an alpha” etc…

Will probably get some incoming paid shill responses soon if they pick up on this. super prevalent if you say anything negative on yt videos or forums :)

All I'll say is I avoided the game for a while because of comments like this, but after playing it can say I've quite enjoyed it and had more value out of it than other ~$50 games I've bought before.

I don't care if it never gets out of alpha or whatever, I enjoy playing it as is. Went in knowing about the bugs, and never gonna spend another cent on it. Maybe I came in during a relatively stable patch or something, but it's been very playable the past few months, other than the start of the 3.18 patch. Haven't tried 3.18.1 yet.

If someone wants to pay $1000 for a ship that you can get in-game anyway, that's on them, think that's stupid to spend on any game. And that side of things is scammy, but same with plenty of games item shops these days. But if you're not spending anything other than the base game, and you go in expecting bugs, you can get $50 of value from this game. Imo I think it should be priced more around the $20-30 range for value, but yeah.

Do not buy this game if you're purchasing it with the hopes it'll be something better in the future though. Buy it if you want to play it in its current form.

  • Joined up to post this; have at me OzBs.

I would not underestimate how much you can enjoy this game and also how annoying the server issues can be. The swings from awe to frustration do get emotional.

It is an immense ecosystem of space flight sim and FPS, that combine for many play styles (pirate, bounty hunter, cargo hauler, salvo and tourism).

A good time to try it before you pledge.
