What's Your New Car's Wait Time?

Just curious to hear what the wait times are for any new car ?

Wait times?

Ex : I booked :

Model : Hyundai Tucson 2.0 Petrol Highlander
Booked on : 15 Mar 2023
Wait time : 3-6 Months

Dealer called me yesterday to ask if I was interested in a non sun roof version of the same car for shorter wait time(may be next few weeks delivery) for $1500 lesser.

I didn't accept the dealer's offer.

Comments

  • Any sort of contract and deposit required to jump in the wait queues?

    • I don't believe so. But apparently you can pay a car broker who "has better connections".

    • Generally, yes, contract plus deposit

    • I was told that some fleet and novated lease companies have a few dealers that keep models "aside" for them so the wait is a bit quicker, but you usually need to be happy with the default colour and model. ZSEV for example I believe was white or silver/grey Essence model- would have come down from Sydney or would be pulled from a batch being sent to dealers for stock/demo rather than customers I would say. I wanted a red Excite so my wait continues (though if they called me and said they had a cancelled red Essence I would strongly consider it at this stage, even with the dreaded sunroof :p).

      • I spoke to novated lease provider in Sep-22 (can't remember which one now) and they said they had gone and placed orders on popular make/models/colours in early 2022 on the basis that they'd be able to help their customers skip the queue.

  • Kia Sportage Sx diesel
    Ordered October
    July/August (apparently…)

Who in their right mind would wait for delivery of a car over 1 month…..yea nah not happening! How are dealerships even surviving with no stock?

    • +2

Dealerships survive with this one little trick: DEMAND.

      • -1

Demand is all good and well but if you cant supply you are losing sales to those that can, or in my case I would not wait to buy new and just buy 2nd hand. I purchased two new cars in 2019 and they are due to be replaced……If its not on the floor Ill go elsewhere.

        • +1

in my case I would not wait to buy new and just buy 2nd hand

In my case, 2nd hand cars cost more than a new one, hence I would rather wait.

        • -1

if you cant supply you are losing sales to those that can

That isn't true unless the buyer is in a hurry. For example, Toyota has their waitlist so long and people waiting for over a year and buying regardless of your opinion.

          • -1

@CocaKoala: 100% its true…..who cares if your wait list is ten years out…….you can only sell what you can produce….if customers are waiting for product it means your supply chain is lacking and you will be losing sales.

            • @kiwimex:

who cares if your wait list is ten years out…

Ten years wait to get a car?! Are you just talking trash or do you have a source for that claim?

              • @CocaKoala: I was being hypothetical of course, If you have a wait list, you have customers waiting who at the drop of a hat could and im sure many do…go elsewhere.

    • Especially for a Toyota

      • What do you feel is the problem with Toyota? I have found not much to fault mine, some design choices I wouldn't have made (who decided Priuses needed a reverse beep on the INSIDE?!) but mechanically solid, 0 issues with them that weren't from user error.

When they decide to go EV properly I will look at going back depending on price and such (not interested in the cave-in they have announced- built through gritted teeth). Since Toyoda left they have announced a proper future EV range, so could be something to watch when I'm ready to move on from the MG, especially if EV prices have come down by then.

    • People who wanted new car.

    • Totally. Personally I'd just buy one off the showroom floor, rather than be so particular about every little detail and have to wait 2 years before I even see it. I'd buy second hand before putting down a deposit and being forced to wait years. It's just looney tunes stuff!

  • Only way is get cars from china but like that’s ever gonna happen, pfft

  • Pretty close to choosing between the Mazda cx60e PHEV vs the Kia Sorento PHEV. I prefer the Kia, but will likely buy whichever one could be delivered first.

The model Y seemed like an interesting choice but I don't want to fumble around with a tablet or weird joystick like controls at freeway speed just to make the AC a tiny bit cooler. I how it went, but the cost cutting measures employed in it like removal of radar (WTF?!?!), parking sensors, and no physical controls on the dashboard are all too extreme for my taste. Perhaps I'm not hip enough for a Tesla, but the next car is going to be a Kia or a Mazda as I said.

My sister's experience - ordered Honda Civic 2023 in blue (ICE) in first week of January, was told car would be available in March. Date was progressively pushed back; by late March the date was out to July. Her previous car was stolen in December so need was getting pretty urgent. She found a 2022 plated MY13 (but red) at another dealer around 25kms away which was a cancelled order and ready to go - rang her original dealership to see if she could get a 2022 model of any colour through them but was told there was not a single one available in Australia. So she advised she was coming in to pick up her deposit and cancel her order. Well lo and behold by the time she got to her dealer he'd got off his lazy backside and found not one, but two 2022 models available. Amazing what you can do when you risk losing a sale. Me, I'd have told him to stick it and then bought the first one she'd found, but she agreed to wait another week for one of these to be delivered to her dealer.

TLDR: original time blew out to seven months and counting, changed order to 2022 plated MY13 and had it within a week.

    • Surprised your sister had to wait for a petrol Civic; didn't think they were selling that well that you actually had to wait for one (unlike the hybrid which had a nine-month waiting list last I heard)

      • -1

Try getting a HRV Hybrid, around 10-12 months.I had mine in six weeks, but I ordered the day they were officially released in April 2022.

        • -1

Yeah but they're priced comparably, right? A petrol Civic is $47K and a hybrid $55K (or $11K more than my top-spec hybrid Corolla)

          • -4

@kerfuffle: Discussing wait times, not pricing, that is irrelevant. Civic Hybrid wait times are now out to just under 12 months.Fantastic things to drive. You cannot compare a Corolla with it anyhow.Oh look I have been ‘downvoted’ by some clown! Coward!

  • Ford Ranger platinum

    estimated delivey August 2023

  • Model? Yaris Cross Hybrid 2023
    Booking Date? April 2023
    Wait times? 9-12 months

  • Waited 9 months for a Kia Sportage GT diesel, lucky I ordered it back in 2021, the waits are neverending now

  • +4

    Tesla Cyber truck.
Deposit paid some time in 2019.
    Some time in 2123.

    • Are they paying you interest and inflation adjustment for your deposit?

      • They just reply with a poop emoji

      • When you paid the deposit you could get a refund at any time. A year later they removed the button for refunds from the website and now you pretty much have to go to a dealership (1.5hr drive each way for me) and talk to someone to get your money back. It's (profanity).

I'm imagining it'll be expensive as hell when, and if, it arrives in Australia. The LDV Electric Ute retails at 93k.

This is the one reason I now believe Elon is a scam artist using his reputation to rip people off. Took my money with an empty promise. Such a cult following for a car company that looks great in paper, but has a product so bad it ranks 27/28 for reliability.

  • Model : Hyundai i20n
    Booked on : 5th March 2022
Wait time : it’s ‘at sea’ currently. Takes 3 different ships to get to Australia. Should have it in a month or 2.

    • Do you really believe that ?
GL especially if in Melb : https://www.drive.com.au/news/quarantine-crisis-deepens-thou…

      • Hopeful.
I’m on an i20n FB group and it generally seems to be about 15 months from order to delivery.
Mine will dock in Brisbane I think.

      • My dealer said they are diverting a lot out of Melbourne and trucking them in, so might be ok?

    • You're doing better than I am. I ordered an i30N Premium in June last year and I was told last week that my car still isn't even in production yet.

      • A particular colour causing the delay? Dealers still quoting 3-4 months wait time currently with quicker orders if flexible on colour.

        • I don't know mate, like, my one is just a white one. My dealer specifically has said that they're seeing 12-18 month wait times for the vehicles. Don't know which dealers are saying 3-4 months.

      • Sedan or hatch?
My dealer rang me towards the end of last year and offered me a white limited edition hatch (auto) and a grey premium hatch (manual). The grey hatch was ready to go.

        • I'm waiting on a auto/dct hatch.

  • -4

Technically no wait time if you buy pre-owned.

    • -6

Everyone commenting here about waiting means they bought a car without saving, and should hand over their ozbargain badge

      • -2

Uh no. Waiting for a delivery of a car does not equate to not having saved up for the car.

      • That's not how it works anymore. We spend money to save money. Sometimes we get free stuff but usually get an order cancellation email too.

    • Have you seen how long it takes to a RWC booked in?

Paid $350. 100% Refundable. Final price is yet to be given to me. I can't afford it for sure. But want to feel nice that i ordered a tesla. Will get the refund once i get the final quote. Till then I'm a a guy who ordered tesla

  • Looks like the Hyundai Tucson Elite(petrol) and Diesel versions are almost immediately available.
Atleast 2 dealers asked if I am interested.

  • Model : Toyota RAV4 Cruiser Hybrid 2WD
    Booked on : 09/07/2021
Wait time : It's been 21 months. Was told 6-8 months wait when I ordered.

    • Will it still come as the old model, or do you get the newest at the time of build? Seems a bit crummy to wait 2-3 years for a car that's 2 years out of date day 1

      • +1

Newest model at time of build.

Source: ordered 12th gen Corolla. Received 12.5th gen Corolla

      • +2

It will be the current model at the time of build. I copped a couple of increases from the new models but was protected from any general price increases.

        • Yeah, plus the newer spec is nicer than the one preceding that, so there's that at least

    • Do you regret not going the AWD?

      • No, I mainly do city driving and never tow so don't really find a need for it.

Can't complain with 2WD's cheaper cost and lower maintenance.

I did a bit of research when deciding and read that Toyota's AWD only activates when needed which was another reason that swayed me away from it.

        • The petrol awd in the edge can do that. Hybrid awd is active all the time ie on acceleration it puts more power to the rear

        • @oblivianz AWD always working in hybrid

  • -3

All new cars have to pass Australia’s Great Wall of Quarantine and Red Tape, which can take years.

Was thinking of possibly taking out a loan for a Corolla Cross Hybrid AWD - but wait time is 24 months and it’s too hard to go without a car in the mean time.

So I bought a second hand Haval which is cheap and nasty but apparently has a good reputation in Australia

  • we were looking late last year at a Tucson, dealer offered us $4k of it without us even wanting to buy one that day, but i was torn between buying and waiting to see if the Hybrid version would come out, and hearing now that the Tuscon will be available in a Hybrid next year im glad i waited.

It seems Hybrids are the way to go if buying new atm, and eventually everything is going to be electric in the future.

    Wait time : ~30 months

  • Model: Hyundai Venue (23MY)
Booked on: week just gone, Apr 2023
Wait time: dealer quoted 6 weeks. will be surprised if it arrives within 2 months.

    • Which model? How much did you pay for it?

      • Partner ordered the Elite model, Dark blue with white roof (two-tone option). $500 deposit, final price should be RRP (~$32k). Dealer threw in floor mats, full tank of fuel and 12 months rego (instead of 6).
        We're in WA.

        • Thanks for your reply. Are you sure your dealer quoted you for 6 weeks to get your car. I am still waiting for my Hyundai i30 hatch active. I ordered it in mid Oct 2022. I am in Melbourne.

          • @Always 2020: Yep. I suspect supply on the Venue is reasonably well matched to demand, being a subcompact (rather than small or mid-size) SUV.
I'm not optimistic that it'll be here in 6 weeks, but will see how we go.

  • Model : BMW X1 2023
    Booked on : Nov 2022
Delivery Date: was told about April 2022 initially, then got delayed. Car is now in production, hopefully it will
    arrive before end of June.

    Booked on: April 2022
Delivery Date: No ETA yet - Was told 6 months, but that has been and gone.
It's a company vehicle and I don't particularly care that it hasn't arrived. Isn't really an upgrade from my 2019 model.

  • Model: Toyota Rav 4 Cruiser Hybrid
    Order: late June 2022
ETA: the salesman said 12m, I told him I thought 18m was more realistic, given the news coming about about pandemic shipping delays etc.

  • Model: Defender 110 D300

probably 10 years, when I might be able to afford a new car…
I just have to keep buying more bargains via Ozbargain to get there.

    • Or not buying any bargain….

  • Wow I can't believe how long the wait times are… Or that there are even wait times.
When I bought my new blue civic in 2016 I only waited 2 weeks because it was a brand new design that was still coming.
I'm happy to buy ex demos now. Less than 2-3k on the clock and ready to drive.

    • +2

We didn't have a pandemic back in 2016. I only had to wait a week for my last new car when I bought it 11 years ago.

    • Most dealerships with any sort of demand wont sell their demos. Believe me, ive tried on a few occasions in the past 12 months.

      • Really? Far out times have changed..
I bought my BMW 2 series demo for ridiculously cheap in 2020. Has something happened since then. Is this all related to the pandemic still?

        • I'd say in 2020 people were a bit skittish about buying a car that several people were in and out of on a daily basis (or, if you were in Vic, couldn't even go to see).

Now I'd say the quarantine delays and long manufacturer wait times mean that demos are harder to replace, so they need to keep them longer so they have something to demo. Ex-demo seem to be a premium- near new and you can get it now- the EXACT car I have on order but as an ex demo from a dealer further away is actually $2k more than I am paying for my freshly-hosed-for-knotweed model.

          • @seannami: Wow that's insane.
I can't believe this. It would be good to see what's happened to manufacturing process that has caused all this. Are companies doing this to try and increase their pricing or is there a legitimate delay from a manufacturing perspective.
The car is got was $14k below brand new pricing.

            • +1

@maverickjohn: Silicon chip shortages across all industries including car manufacturing

  • Model: Hyundai i30N Premium Hatch
    Booking Date: Early June 2022
Wait times: Originally told around April this year, recently got in touch with dealer who told me from when orders are submitted, they are seeing anywhere from 12-18 months for fulfillment.

I don't actually have any solid ETA on my car, dealer just told me that my particular one isn't even in production at this point in time. Just hanging in there and waiting….

  • I know someone waiting 14 months and counting for a Toyota. Fairly normal it seems.

  • Hyundai i30 hatch active
    ordered mid Oct 2022
Wait time 3 to 6 months
    Still waiting.

  • +1

    Honda Civic Type R FL5
    12 - 18 months wait.
    Deposit placed Feb 2023.

    • I have to say I'm not a fan of the FL5s subdued styling compared to the FK8s over-the-top ricer boy aesthetic.

The FL5 just looks like a regular Civic now with some bolt-on ricer mods, especially from the front.

If anything, most of the Type R fanboys wanted even more garish exterior styling, not less.
I can't imagine it's going to attract anyone who would have bought or did buy an FK8, especially because other than the exterior/interior styling, nothing of note has changed between the two generations.

      • I suppose everyone has their preferences. I would never have ordered an FK8 or any replacement if it was more outrageous.

Plenty of owners have upgraded from the FK8 to the FL5. It’s not a big change but making something great perfect.
