Decent price but i never got why they are called telescopic

    • +13

Probably because you can literally adjust the length of the pole.

      telescopic
      adjective
      1.
relating to or made with a telescope.
      "telescopic data"
      2.
having or consisting of concentric tubular sections designed to slide into one another.
      "a telescopic umbrella"

    • +3

It only works if you look through the narrow end 1

      1. /don't do it

  • Thanks can anyone please share your opinion on this product. Is it powerful enough for thicker branches etc

    • +1

One of the reviews on bunnings website says only good for thin stuff. Was 2 years ago though so not sure if it is the same product still.

"Found this to be much heavier than anticipated. Lacks a little power. Only suitable to trim very light foilage and thin branches. Very top heavy and heavy on the shoulders. Works fine if you are regularly hedging new growth. Pretty good price."

    • +2

I would read some of the reviews. There are quite a lot of very negative reviews. Yes, there are a lot of 5 star reviews but most of them are just 1 throwaway line. A bit suss to me. The negative ones at least go into depth why they are critical. Like a lot of them say, I would try before you buy.

The pole chainsaw (pruner) is also currently on sale for $170. That may be better for thick branches

      Ryobi One+ 18V 8" (20cm) Cordless Pole Pruner OPP1850

      • +2

Can confirm. I have the OPP1850 pole pruner, and this can get through seriously thick branches.. I think they say the max is 15cm, but I've done 20cm easily.

        • 20cm????

    • Max cut diameter 16mm

        Edit: 18mm.
        the updated version has 16mm.

I do Olympic lifting 5 days a week and I struggle with this for any length of time. I might not be great at lifting, but I consider myself stronger than average. Regret the purchase.

      Issues:

      • The top of it is very very heavy as that’s where the motor is. Fine if you’re cutting directly above you, but any angle and you’ll struggle to hold it there for long. There is barely any weight at the base to counterbalance.

      • The trigger to operate is right at the base of the unit. To reach it you’re always holding it at an odd angle. And it means you’re always a long way from the heavy motor.

      • The strap is shit and connects to the wrong spots. Made worse by the position of the trigger. You can’t use the strap to counterbalance the unit. I find I have to use the strap very short, more like a seatbelt to hold the pole to me.

      Positives:
      I’m getting stronger.

Was reading some of the reviews. Some good ideas in there for making the unit easier to deal with.

        • You can hook both ends of the strap to the middle, like the girl in the 3rd product photo. Seems obvious I guess, but wasn't to me. I just connected the strap to the points provided.
        • you can use a Torx security screw to move the strap position on the telescope.
        • Use a block of wood to hold the trigger on, so you don't have to reach to the base.

I'd still spend the extra $60 and get the newer model: https://www.bunnings.com.au/ryobi-18v-one-pole-hedge-trimmer…

      • Same as the gutter blower! To use the strap comfortably you cannot reach the triggers!!

Is it powerful enough for thicker branches etc

This is a hedge trimmer - it can't cut any branches.

You need the pole saw - https://www.bunnings.com.au/ryobi-one-18v-8-20cm-cordless-po… - for this task. I have one of these and it's great - it's a fully functional chainsaw.

  • +2

Decent power but terrible design. I borrow my neighbour’s one for hard to reach hedges. All the weight is at the cutting end making it very difficult to manoeuvre.

    • A lot of the negative reviews are basically saying this. At the very least I would say go into the store and try it with the pole extended for a few minutes and see if it's true for you.

  • +2

I believe this is the older model.
The new model is $229 and 40% lighter.

    • Yes. This is the old model. I’d avoid (my comment above).

      • +1

I have the new one yet still struggle to trim the top of the ball hedges.
As soon as you tilt it to reach further, it becomes very very top heavy.

  • great

  • I have this. It's robust but quite heavy.

  • thanks OP - needed to get one of these for a while to replace mine that was stolen out of the garage.
I get the negative reviews but for me, it's a great tool. I avoid having to get on ladders, and my biceps get a work out.. win/win

  • I have about 15 Ryobi tools and don't own this, but have borrowed one on multiple occasions and I'm looking at buying the Makita 18v, even though I have to get into a different type of battery system for one tool. It's just way too heavy to use for more than very short periods and due to it's weight it's hard to use it for precise cutting. It does cut ok but I need something I can use for long periods of time and be more precise with.

  • I own one. Saw the very heavy reviews and tend to agree. Only bought it because I'm part of the Ryobi ecosystem. Not their greatest product.
