What Are Your Traveling Tips for 2023?

Hey,

I thought this would be interesting, if people can list any tips they use for traveling.

This could range from the best walking all round shoes, to ways to avoid scams and/or what you will require 100% aka travel adapters.

My main question.

Do people still carry their phone, wallet & passport? Is it easier and okay to have just your phone these days? If you're asked for ID, is a drivers license enough through MYGOV or do you need the license card?

I am thinking how I can carry less, therefore worry about less! I am 50/50 bringing a laptop, but may just bring my tablet instead.

I'm keen to hear everyone's travel tips, I am planning to travel as light as possible even tho I am in Europe for a month.

:)

Ask ozbargain first whether you need a DSLR or whether a phone will suffice for holiday snaps.

Just zoom in with your screen. Who needs optical zoom?

  • Unless you need the laptop for work, don't take it.

    Have lots of money..

In many countries using phones to pay (and at times even using credit cards) is not viable or as widespread as in Australia. So don't assume that what works in Australia will work overseas. Even in countries like Japan, go outside main cities and you might need cash. Europe is a bit all over the place - Greece used to be cash only (aka no tax) but now is much more electronic payment.

Do some research on avoiding tourist traps.

Have some really good plans in place for what you want to see, do and eat, etc, and be flexible with plans.

You need your official documents, make copies as well in case you lose them. Check for visas before travelling, some can take a few days to get.

don't travel to see "the sights."

travel for the minuscule and randomness.

A humble suggestion: read the 199 replies to this thread then edit your post with a more specific question

  • If you're asked for ID, is a drivers license enough through MYGOV

I really doubt any country is going to accept an ID through an app they're not familiar with.

(Even we don't - over here, if you're from overseas, a physical foreign passport is pretty much the only acceptable form of ID).

    • It's just such a huge risk to carry a Passport on you.

      • Carry a certified copy of your passport and leave the original in the hotel safe.

        • Where do you do that?

Leave the laptop & the tablet at home. Travel outside the main centres, preferably in places where English is not spoken. Immerse yourself in local culture, not a screen. Speak, eat, drink with local people. Treat it like every day is your first day at school. Absorb, don’t broadcast.

Yes, maybe if you have unlimited time when you travel LOL

    • Best food I've eaten was off the beaten path and restaurant owners didn't speak any English.
