  • Buyer Beware!

Ironically, I had a heart-stopping moment only this morning regarding my Samsonite Messenger Bag. It is not this exact model but close enough for me to be weary with this.

When getting off the train this morning, the strap over my shoulder separated from one end of the bag, dropping the bag on its corner onto a tile floor. I had a Macbook Air, charger and iPad in there. I'm relieved to report I got away without any visible damage to the bag's contents however I think that was more to do with me rather than any robustness of the bag.

For the few months I've had it, any time I put it down on a hard floor, I've never been very happy with how thin the base is. I could actually feel my Mac connecting with the ground unless it went down very softly. With that, a few weeks ago, I folded some 1cm packing foam in half and stapled the left and right sides, effectively making an envelope / pouch to slide my Mac into. Without this, I fear the story would have been worse. Any advantages on weight savings I gained by buying a MacBookAir, has been cancelled by the additional foam. Either way, if you are planning on carrying things than don't bounce very well, I'd seriously consider a different brand of bag.

Don't put all your Apples in one "basket"

    • "Any advantages on weight savings I gained by buying a MacBookAir, has been cancelled by the additional foam"
      3rd world problems are tough!

      • Last time I looked, foam was very light!

      • I think you mean 1st world. You really are the Hoff.

        • Can you tell us what's your model or post a photo?
Also, any advantages on weight savings you gained by buying a MacBookAir has been cancelled by adding an Ipad in the same bag, and not the foam, don't you agree?

        • No.

          MacbookPro + iPad > MacbookAir + iPad.
          Thus MBP > MBA.

Anyways, I wish people would get off the topic of the foam. This is not a 'which is heavier' thread. The strap tore away from the bag, nothing to do with foam, simple!

        • is it that hard to post a photo of the problem? that would be way more useful IMHO

      • yea 3rd world problems are tough indeed. fact.

      nice story bro…

      • CTFXC anyone ? lol

I have one of these already.
I reckon it is an excellent bag. Plenty of storage compartments and decently padded.
I just bought 3 of these. (Postage still at $10)
I have no intention of bouncing my bag off the ground but understand some people might want more padding. It is quite comparable to heaps of bags around the $60 mark.

    • The simple fact remains - the strap broke away from the bag. A laptop that drops onto one of it corners from a height of 1 metre is not something I intend on settling as acceptable practice.

      • The clip on this bag is very strong and I highly doubt its going to snap unless you tear the "Tear-resistant" fabric, the bottom layer of this bag is thick enough to be placed on any surface, any "bag" that's not a briefcase if dropped isn't a good thing for a laptop….

Compare the clip of this bag with yours and let us know what type it was…, Thx !

        • There isnt any clip on the bag I have. The strap is looped around a device similar to the D chrome device on the COTD bag. The problem with mine was the 'D' ring and the canvas sewn into the bag to hold it place came away from the bag.

        • So you are talking about a completely different model with completely different clips?
"Similar" means nothing to me.Even if it was the same model you might have just been unlucky and got a defective item. Can you please post a photo of the problem so we can have a better idea ?

        • I'm sorry you don't understand the word 'similar' though if the other eye was open, you would see from my original post, in the first paragraph, I stated it is a different model.

You seem to not want to acknowledge the design of how the 'clips' (your word - I would use D or O Ring as more appropriate) are sewn into the bag are indeed similar, if not the same. The problem isn't with the ring, it's with how they material looped around the ring is sewn into the bag.

As for being unlucky, I'm actually counting my lucky stars nothing broke when it dropped to the ground. You seriously think its okay to just shrug my shoulders if I ended up with a $2000 bag worth of glass and circuits?

        • yea GaelicAU it has happened to me too but with a logitech messenger bag, exactly like the one you have, thankfully this Samsonite after 2yrs hasn't yet shown any signs of wear and tear, so I'm happy and highly recommend it…!, everyone has had their own experiences guys lets just chill… ;)

        • "everyone has had their own experiences guys lets just chill… ;)"

Exactly. If I was carrying around a carton eggs, I wouldn't have minded so much. The fact I was using the bag for what it was intended, I thought it worth posting my experience considering the financial dilemma I narrowly avoided.

          1. your experience is about a different model, different clips,D rings, O rings etc, so it's like comparing apples with oranges!
          2. you started complaining about the foam's weight not us!
          3. If you were using the bag for what is was intended then you should know that most of these bags have ONE padded slot for ONE device(tablet/laptop).You cannot expect the same protection with every slot/pocket of the bag.

In any case, thank you for sharing your experience.
P.S. I just bought one bag, mainly based on Risto's opinion who already owns an IDENTICAL one ;)

        • mine arrived today! It's a beautiful quality bag with lots of pockets!
I'm not a big fan of COTD but this time i'm very satisfied!

  • I normally carry my 13" MB Air in a lightly padded sleeve cover to protect from scratches from cables so at this price, I might bite. To replace some $7.99 Ikea sling bag.

  • Why can't I find this bag on any official Samsonite website? I have checked Australia, US, and UK. Plenty of them on eBay though - smells like a knockoff to me! Happy to be corrected of course, in which case I will buy one.

that's probably because this is an older range, i think 2009 series around that year onwards…

Got mine this morning, not too much wait. I like so many pockets it gets, but a little bit big for my 12" notebook. Anyway it's all good as a quality bag.

  • Gaelic's review scared the heck out of me until I read 2 sentences in and found they were talking about a different bag entirely… >.>

I just received my bag yesterday; I have to say I'm quite satisfied with it so far. Admittedly my use of it will differ from some of you, as I won't be using it to store a laptop. So I advise each of you to take that into account when weighing my words.

It's a sturdy little bag. I don't know if I'd agree with previous comments about it needing more padding, but as I'm only trying to protect notepads and sandwiches, this is probably less of an issue for me. It has a nice colour combination; the bright blue on the zippers and clasps really makes it pop. Despite it being designed for laptop use, it has a large assortment of different pockets, which is useful for me as I mainly need it as a replacement briefcase. It also has the advantage of not being too big, as I've noticed with so many other messenger bags.

The strap is quite strong, as well as the clasps and zippers (which are thick & heavy duty, the way I like zippers and clasps to be). I can't imagine them breaking, or coming loose as poor Gaelic's did. My only disappointment would be the lack of a drink holder, but as the bag was meant to hold laptops and not lunches, this is perfectly understandable.

Seeing as I bought it for $9.99 on COTD, I'm very happy with my purchase (I'm still new to COTD, so I haven't had time to form the negative opinion of them everyone says I'm supposed to have). Realistically, I could see myself spending up to 5 times as much for a bag of similar quality, and I still would have been satisfied.

For me, it was the kind of purchase that increases your respect in the company that made it, so thank you Samsonite. :)
