I have a 6 set of wera screwdrivers and might be the only disappointed person here with the brand. One of the flatheads has broken at the tip, and the phillips heads come to too much of a point such that they dont get enough driver in the screw and just slip out a lot. Next to useless. This set does look better but yeah.

    • +7

Sounds like you are using too small a phillips driver, try the next size up next time.

      • +4

I don't know much about screwdriver sizes and whatnot but am I the only one that kinda tests the head in the screw before ultimately deciding which one to use?

        • +1

Philips screwdrivers or the bits will have a number oh them. #2 is the most common size. #1 being smaller and #3 being big. I don't recall ever using my #3 screwdriver for home use.

2 is the size I get out by default but I do put the screw onto the bits to try them out if PH2 is the wrong size.

Alternatively, you may be in need of a pozidriv bit if the + on the screw has notches in between the lines like another plus sign that's 45 degrees out.

@BBear53: Tip for everybody here…ditch the Philips, and go with a decent set of JIS.

            • @Banj0: Who makes a decent JIS set?

              • +1

                @johnwinds: Vessel

                Thank me later.

                  • +1

@johnwinds: Yeah. The pair with the steel cap…you can belt them with a hammer on stuck screws. They impart a little turn when you do. Very cool. I don't use the impact feature often, but it can be handy.

I like these not only on JIS screws, they're good on other cross point type screws too. Best I've used.

                    • +1

@Banj0: Thanks! Bought @ $54.30 (apparently the lowest according to 3 camels, and only 1 left in stock according to Amazon).

                      • +1

@johnwinds: Hope you like 'em. They look/feel better in the flesh than they appear on the stock photos!

            • +1

@Banj0: I read you suggestion and told my wife really wanted a JIS.
              Didn't go well…

          • +3

@BBear53: Or a JIS screwdriver if it has a dot marked on the screw head.

Some light reading for those following on at home:

            https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_screw_drives

            • @turbochris: Thanks for that, didn't know there was another standard. I recently bought a new #2 Philips but I think I'll grab a JIS set when my current gear wears out.

      • Nah even the big size one does it. But I think Turbo is right i have a bloody posidrive! good to know.

Wera are considered some of the best screwdrivers in the world. Please note that screws are often manufactured to FAR lower standards than Wera screwdrivers, so low quality screws often have shallow heads, so a perfectly designed screwdriver does not go far enough in. If your Wera screwdrivers are not working with your screws, I can almost guarantee the problem is low quality screws, not the screwdriver….

      • ! would not have thought low-quality screws would break tips off

    Wera 950/9 Hex-Plus Multicolour 2 Hex-Plus BlackLaser Metric 2 L-Key Set 9 Pieces, 9 Pieces

Decent option to trigger the 10% off. Even without the 10% off the hex set is cheaper than the last deal.

Look at the second image for each one. One has pozi and the other has square drive bits.

All time low for these micro drivers, great for electronics etc:

    • $35.21 with 10% off.
I checked my past order, I paid $41 just recently….

      Very good set.

  • Bought, thanks OP!

  • +2

This is a nice set of high quality tools.

One small criticism I have is that some of the bit holders can be a bit loose meaning that it is very easy for bits to fall out. Just keep the bit holder closed when not in use and it's all good.

    • On the contrary, mine was too tight. Nearly cut myself trying to pry one of the bits out.

  • +1

I got this set a few months back. Highly recommended. It lives in my laptop bag, and has been my go-to kit for pretty much everything around the house lately.
Pair it with the ratcheting screw drive handle I've linked for the best screwing experience you've ever had :D (and it will qualify you for the extra 10% off I think)

    https://www.amazon.com.au/Wera-05051461001-4x142-0-Ratchet-S…

    • except no precision bits… It would of been the ultimate handy toolkit.

      • +1

I have a Xiaomi Miiji (i think it was called) for all the small stuff. it lives next to the wera kit :D

    • Paid the same price for this recently, without the 10% extra discount.
      Hope you grabbed one

    • +1

But is it better than LTT’s ratchet screwdriver? :)

I bought 3 of these kits last time. Go so many different types, however about 90% of the time, I don't use the Wera but instead pickup this when I need to repair/change battery around the house: SCA Bit Set With Ratchet 77 Piece - https://www.supercheapauto.com.au/p/sca-sca-bit-set-with-rat…

why? Unlike Wera 39 pcs kit, it also includes precision bits. Pretty much covers every screw type you need. With this Wera kit, sometimes I gotta carry two kits and I usually don't know where the other kit is. Any new dads around here will know why having precision bits is a must ;)

    • +2

That's an impressive kit with the precision bits!

I can't justify this wera when sidchrome Nano is so close in price @$79 https://sydneytools.com.au/product/sidchrome-scmt12120-38pce…

      11 x Sockets: 5.5mm, 6mm, 7mm, 8mm, 9mm, 10mm, 11mm, 12mm, 13mm, 14mm

Gotta have those sockets. Not a lot of kits are this small with a 14mm & strong case.

I drop a hex extension bit in but it's a lot better for my needs

      • +2

The sidchrome nano is excellent. I've used it daily for the last 2.5 years and it hasn't missed a beat.

  • You get the also get the 10% if you buy another Wera set. I got this one and the micro screwdrivers and got 10% discount.

  • Thanks OP bought

  • +1

Does anyone know why this only comes with one size flat head? Is that normal?

  • Highly recommend this from my experience working on a road bike. The ratchet is just amazing to use and has good clearance for most tasks

  • +2

Last time I bought this, my 10mm socket was lost right out of the pack, barely 10mins

    • Last time Amazon shipped a different model to us

      • Last time mine was lost in the post and got a refund.

  • Awesome. Picked this up plus a hex set and a kompakt.

  • Thanks! Bought, but it went back to a higher price at midday. So the deal has expired.
