nbn FTTN: Any Cheap/Old Modem Would Work? I Got a Nest Wi-Fi for Coverage and Only Need a Modem

I purchased a TP-Link modem/router AC1200 (Archer VR300) for my Superloop FTTN connection. (My line only can do 75Mb/27Mb so I don't need the fastest devices).

But yesterday I bought a used Nest Wifi (Router + 1 access point) which would be more than enough to cover my whole apartment.

I'm considering returning my TP-Link Modem, and bought a cheap used VDSL/NBN modem off FB marketplace.

Is there any drawbacks?

If I buy an old MyRepublic or Telstra NBN modem, would I be able to configure it for Superloop?

Thanks for enlightening me.

Grab a Telstra Gen 2. Will work with FTTN… $20-$50…

    • Might even have a still working 4G backup sim!

      • That keeps me warm and fuzzy at night… A Gen 2 with a working 4G backup sim!

        • Really? there is no expiry or deactivation when you leave Telstra??

    • Will a Gen 3 do the trick as well? I will turn off the wifi in any case, I'll just buy the cheaper one I found.

I saw one MyRepublic, will it work as well?

I was wondering if they are kind of locked with a provider.

      Thanks

  • My line only can do 75Mb/27Mb

Shameful. I don't know how the Liberals sleep at night after what they did to our NBN.

    • Honestly that's more than enough for my use. Downloading at 6Mb/s an no issue streaming Netflix or YouTube @1440p

    • There's more important issues to worry about , I'm sure "liberals" sleep at night !

    • exactly why people should ditch NBN and experience a 5G trial (if their location allows)

BTW I have heard from a friend on vodafone 5G home internet who moved modem location like from Home to office, His internet works still fine, so I guess you can also just order 5G to a different address (like friend or someone else) and then move modem to your desired place.

Assuming you can get 5G signal in that location you should get way better speeds that crap FTTN, BTW I think it also can drop to 4G if no 5G is available.

Also modems come FREE in most 5G plans (assuming you return modem after ending plan, or staying with ISP for 3 years under same 5G plan)

      • I considered 5G at some point, but too exepensive still, I'm payin 58$ for my NBN plan

        • Assuming you are looking at NBN 50 plan and paying $58 for NBN IN A PROMO 6 MONTH PERIOD or so ??

          compare it with

          TPG 5G broadband
6 months service - 1st month free, ongoing $59 for 50 Mbps plan, or $64.99 for 100 Mbps plan (that is ongoing NOT a 6 month or 12 month pricing).
So technically if you compare your 6 month service from NBN (58x6=348) vs 5G (59x0+59x5=295).
Plus do not forget you get a free modem too worth around $400-600, (given you stay with them for 3 years).

It was better with vodafone previously when we could additionally stack CASHBACK offers with it, but not anymore. They also dont offer unlimited speeds plan anymore like they did when I got it.

      • 5G is a shared medium so prone to congestion like all mobile networks.
But certainly if your in an area with enough capacity then yeah its not a bad alternative for NBN. but in a lot of areas 4G is actually quicker then 5G and NBN will out perform both.
Remembering that Fibre is available everywhere you just need to pay a premium for it in some cases and be running a business.
Unless your in a residential area that has FTTP from NBN or has a free upgrade available.

    • 75Mbps isn't that bad, some places can only get 25Mbps.
NBNCo are in the process of upgrading everyone they can to full Fibre.

  • I second the Telstra smart modem. I bought a Gen 2 for cheap on ebay and use it with a Nest Wifi mesh. Just put the modem in bridge mode and let the Nest Wifi take care of the routing. The nest wifi only has one ethernet port, but I have it plugged in to a cheap switch to connect all my wired devices.

  • Can this be used for HFC connections? E.g., wall socket connects to the little black nbn connection box, which then connects to the nest… (or do you need a router in the middle)

    • it is FTTN, I don't have a NBN Box, only a old phone line plug to connect my modem to.

    • nbn NTD plugs into Nest Wi-Fi. You don't need another router in the middle.

  • Telstra gen 2 ok with all providers?
Will they be easy to set up?
Im Thinking to make the switch to Aussie, price seems ok $69 then 79 for 50/20.
