Bike Recommendation for Tall and Heavy Male

I don't claim to be tall, but I know I'm heavy and buying a bike is my first step to lose weight.

Any recommendation for a 185cm 133kg male ?

My budget is $800 but can stretch it a bit for the right bike. My riding will be recreation and fitness, I don't plan on commuting on it.

Is this a good option ? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/768031

Thanks in advance.

Have a read of this post, and work out where you want to ride, as that will help with bike choice.

    This in XL: https://www.99bikes.com.au/merida-22-speeder-200-red-black
    Or this in XL: https://www.99bikes.com.au/merida21-speeder-100-dark-blue-bl…

Go to the store and have a test ride.

Whatever bike you get, the seat will most likely be very hard and uncomfortable for rides longer than 30 min.

You might want to get something like this to add on: https://www.amazon.com.au/Cloud-9-Cruiser-Anatomic-Saddle-10…

If you want to ride off-road (or off-bike paths) get a mountain bike.

  • You will probably need a giant bike

    • I see what you did there. Other brands will be as good.

OP, go to a store, test, compare and decide.

  • For "recreation and fitness", I'd have thought a hard-tail mountain bike would be the place to start.
They are more rugged than a road bike, and you'll appreciate the softer tyres, relaxed geometry and front suspension to smooth the ride over urban obstacles.
Just swap the knobbly tyres for slicks for some extra speed.

A hybrid is another option, but for a big guy getting started, I'd stick to the hardtail MTB.

Look in the $600-$800 range on 99bikes . hydraulic brakes and 8 or more cogs at back. ie not the Nx7-speed freewheel models.

Giant have a sale on at the moment.

Talon 2 is a good bike if you are more inclined to an entry level but "proper" mountain bike (it's designed for off road, not just "styled" that way)

Roam if gravel roads is more your style.

  • 185cm is probably between large and xl sizes. So definitely need to get fitted. Buying online might end up with the wrong size which will no encourage you to ride.

133kg shouldn’t be over the weight limit of most basic bikes. Weight limits tend to be on high end gear that is built as light as possible.

As for style, your riding terrain will determine whether a flat bar hybrid style or mountain bike would be better. Unless you are heading off act pavement, a hybrid will likely do the job. Suspension isn’t necessary.

Keep in mind that while cycling is great for increasing fitness/stamina etc, it’s not brilliant at dropping kgs because it’s very efficient. Running will burn a lot more kj in the same time.
