  • This oil is nasty compared to red island with dukka.
Red island has been $10 a litre this week a Woolworths so bought another 6 litres.

Always try the oil with a piece of white bread and then work out if you like the flavour.

    • -1

try the oil with a piece of white bread

white bread is high in carbs and not good for you.

      • Not entirely correct — white bread is low in fibre, i.e. high in *net carbs — not to mention the bleaching agents! — but I'll vote you up anyway, for nailing the spirit of it.

        • -2

More bullshit. White breads vary, but are made from white flour, which excludes the germ and bran. This has been done for thousands of years to improve storage life, but loses some nutrition value.

          • @bargaino:

            • Calls it "bullshit"
            • Goes on to reaffirm said "bullshit":

            excludes the germ and bran.

            😄

            • @wisdomtooth: referred to the alleged bleaching agents, as clear in link. Please don't spread conspiracy theories and urban legends.

              • @bargaino:

All milled flour will bleach, or turn white, on its own when allowed to stand exposed to air (unbleached flour). Because this takes time, bleaching agents such as chlorine dioxide and benzoyl peroxide are added to the flour. (BHGl)

                • @wisdomtooth: You asked what bleaching is. You should be asking how much it is actually done in Australia. This is not the US.
You know those brilliant white chinese buns? They use bleaching agents. American super-white bread does too.
But before you scare people, are they really a problem? Sunshine and oxygen are "bleaching agents".

I believe chemical bleaching of flour is banned in Australia.

So many false fears are spread on the 'net. Please do not add to it.

                    See discussion

"Discussion"?? That's mostly a spitting contest on the merits of Dr. Mercola as a source.

I believe chemical bleaching of flour is banned in Australia.

                    Is it? Source, pls.

                    • @wisdomtooth: Why do you think the "I believe" was prefixed? Good source lacking, just multiple claims you can see from 5 seconds on google.

                      from the link above:

Unbleached flour: with the exception of some speciality cake/biscuit flours, almost all flours in Australia are unbleached. The label has stuck around from when they were bleached decades ago.

Cobram performed better than Red Island according to Choice expert tests. See comments below.

      • I can only say I back to back did my own tests on every brand against a local family owned grove with Dukkah and red island was the only one to come close on flavour.

      This oil is nasty

Maybe you're not used to true olive oil (a lot of fakes, diluted in "vegetable," i.e. soybean, oil out there). True olive oil does have strong taste and fragrance; perhaps what you're after is a tasteless oil blend.

      • -2

Nope all the Cobram oils tasted like any other vegetable oil, flavourless, my preference is for a peppery note.

  • -1

    Good cooking oil

    • -2

      Not for deep frying.

    • -1

That's a waste. And the wrong aroma for most dishes. Use light olive oil to cook instead.

Red Island, same company, is currently $10 per litre. I'll admit I cannot tell the difference. What is it?

They seem to have a monopoly on the Australian EVOO market, and like many people, I'm still distrustful of European oil which has been adulterated. So I buy local and get a warm feeling.

    • Are you sure red island and Cobram is the same company?

      • +3

Yes. Cobram is their top shelf product, Red Island is their second

        • +2

They use olives from other farms for red island vs their own farms for Cobram.
          Choice rate them differently.

          • @bashar20: Cockatoo Grove above and Bertolli tied with Cobram Estate?? Hmm… 🤔

            • @wisdomtooth: My thought exactly after tasting them all.

              • @Gusper: The Bertolli rated as 2nd is the organic fruity one and not the standard one, which has been out of stock for a while from everywhere.

I personally love the cockatoo grove robust one. But it hasn’t been on special for a long time at woolies.

      • I did not know this, just checked the Conan website and confirmed this. no idea why the red island is better based on this.

        • Taste is subjective.

        • Maybe you got a good batch when you tested it? Perhaps the difference between Cobram and Red Island is not so much in quality per se, but in quality control?

They use olives from other farms for red island vs their own farms for Cobram.

  • Remano is always at 7.29 for 750ml for those close to an Aldi.

    • Is it mild enough for cooking stir fry?

      • +1

Not sure. Works great with pizza dough.

      • +1

Mild? You don't want EVOO. Plenty of other oils exist.

        • -1

Don't use "other", i.e. seed, oils for cooking — they're nasty for human health! — just use light, instead of extra virgin, i.e. cold pressed, olive oil (on savoury dishes, and coconut oil on sweet ones).

  • People should trust their mouth not Choice.

  • Coles will have the 4 litre tin of la espanola *for $32**, they have it in extra virgin and light and mild
Better than this label imo for overall use, this i got once and was only good on salad as it was very strong

  • +1

is it only the classic cobram that is on sale? - what about the cobram robust?

from my taste test - the robust cobram is the best for salads and bread - after that I go for red island

  • +1

I'm not seeing the value here. Harris Farms has better deals on EVOO

    $7.99 for Mellow
    https://www.harrisfarm.com.au/products/rosto-extra-virgin-ol…
    or $9.99 for the "Oomph"
    https://www.harrisfarm.com.au/products/rosto-extra-virgin-ol…

    • Thanks. Is that a normal price or on sale?

      1. Harris Farm is only in NSW (and a couple of places in Brisbane).
      2. Are these as good or better than Cobram?
    • Did you try the oomph? I like robust peppery evoo.

  • Red Island is only $10 a litre today, buy that instead of Cobram tomorrow that’s more expensive.
