    • That's the link from the expired deal. I added the coupon link.

I have the doorbell and it works great, very happy with it.

Just an fyi you need to pay a subscription after your months free trial. This allows you to review and access videos after the event. $50 for the year but its not made obvious on the packaging. You can proceed without but videos aren't stored and only live view is available without it.

Wow if me i wil be furious and return it. No way im going to pay 50. Just get eufy

Can you rout to your home system for storage? That would be the way.

If you have nothing to hide then the Ring doorbell is okay.

As I said in that thread, anything that has an internet connection is a potential money-making opportunity for corporations. Go dumb.

You know it's in our privacy statement that we as health professionals can provide information to police/ court if they request as well.
For criminal investigations there would be clauses that allow them to do this.

Also as an FYI. Google also allows this with their surveillance and cams.

    • wow i wish my neighbors ring gave evidence of their drug dealing everytime a bloody customer came

      • Snitch on them to police.

        • it’s bankstown no snitches haha…plus the cops know ..

        • plus we have all had a bit of a break as both brothers are in jail atm for their chosen profession

$50/year for the subscription is a bit much I think, good deal if you think otherwise though

    • yeah introducing subscriptions to existing customers is gonna be bad thing to wake up to. So many other doorbell/cameras don't require ongoing fees.

    • Yeah totally not cool. Bought it a few years ago and didn't even know about the subscription bit until I logged in one day and found out I had to pay to see the recordings. Recording starts way too late too. By the time it senses and starts recording say for instance a person running by, the person is already gone. Ended up buying a Kogan SmarterHome that comes with floodlight and powerful sensor for $60. No doorbell but no subscription either.

  • Better off Aqara if you have HomeKit devices

  • Can you hack it to use your own server?

I grabbed the $149 Costco deal from a few days ago. Still happy that I paid the extra $10 since it was delivered

    • +2

For sure. This is mainly for people who are heading in anyway or missed out on the earlier deal.

I really don't like how online and stores are really kept separate though. I wanted to get something exchanged that I bought online as I wasn't happy with the condition of it. It was really hard to do and was super painful. I was eventually able to get a refund and then had to repurchase in-store.

But that's the same experience even if you bought something in-store and wanted to exchange it. bottom line is that they don't exchange. you have to return the goods and get a refund, when walk in and purchase the other item that you wanted to exchange the first item for.

        • I have experienced something similar when buying something in-store but my point is about them saying that online and stores are separate.

This time though, initially they wanted me to return it online. Online and in-store is separate they said. I told them I came all the way out to the store which is pretty far for us and I wanted to make sure we didn't get another dud one.

After that, the price was $40 more in store and they didn't want to change the price for me as again they said online and individual stores are separate. They kept banging on about the online price including postage even though it was cheaper online.

It did work out in the end but it was really painful.

    • You can talk to the call center they might refund the money or u can return in store.
I m going to do the same as I also bought from the same deal.
I think mine is not yet shipped so they might be able to cancel it give it a try

    Costco not open today fyi

    • Ahh, no worries then! I did think the supermarket carpark was super empty this morning when I went to the bakery. Forgot what day it was.

  • Still waiting for Ubiquiti G4 Doorbell Pro - non subscription; PoE doorbell.
For some reason; very few Power over Ethernet doorbells in the market. Supplier taking 2+ years to supply Australia; may have to get this just to have something other than a cable by the door!

    • +2

Apparently a new Reolink doorbell is PoE too? Can’t remember, but became available in aus in last month or two

      edit: here it is https://reolink.com/au/product/reolink-video-doorbell/#speci…

G4 is a good Ring alternative, if you don’t mind setting up Unifi Protect, here’s my setup (suits apple house):

I have non pro g4 doorbell, so using 24V AC power, and 2.4ghz wifi. Running Unifi Protect on a UDMP router, with a 1tb laptop hdd. Router , doorbell , all up cost is not cheap. >! And all other cams are non ubiquiti so running 2 systems in parallel. I admit, it’s not the most efficient. And 2.4ghz wifi, ick.

Even still, it’s amazing and I’m glad I went to this effort. Smart object detection means the cam isn’t heavy on bandwidth.

Add Scrypted on a synology nas in a docker (many ways to run docker but the easiest path of entry is syno nas - requires a ‘+’ model with Intel or AMD, chances are if you’re willing to go UDMP, you’ve got a nas already. Running it on the UDMP may be an option too)

But I get local recording , local, fast and decent object detection, home automation events triggered from object detection, (auto porch lights that don’t trigger from cats is next level) and i can use my existing iCloud for a secondary copy of video which does its own separate object detection and slightly delayed but smart notifications.

I’m very wary of cloud when it comes to things that can pick up voice. iCloud doesn’t have the same privacy issues as other online footage storage, and in this setup, it’s optional. If internet dies, cams still record. If I turn off cloud recording for privacy, I still have local. Tho HomeKit video means it’s very easy to access / review footage.

Setup is more complex than Ring et Al and over 5 years more expensive too, but I’ll still take this every time :)!<

Have fun getting spied on. I wouldnt use one if these if they paid me

  • Anyway to get this without buying Costco membership? Do they do a free trial or anything?

  • The one I posted does say out of stock. Maybe just call ahead before going as this is the current in price sale. It's not starting from Monday. It's already available at that price in store.
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/13593507/redir

    • Maybe it was unofficially at some stores? They don't always have the online special in-store for less.

      • Generally it's always around $10 more online to cater for delivery. I would really advise everyone to call first.
If you are already going there it's ok but if only for ring. Maybe call first. I would just feel bad for you if you go there for that sole purpose and they are all sold out

        • +1

Individual Costco stores and Costco Online are completely separate though. Being OOS online is no indication of stock in-store. I'm not guaranteeing stock being available in-store though.

Anyone who is renting - just be careful you get permission from the owner and let them know that when you move out, there will be damage left to the door that will require someone to come up with $1,000 for a new front door. Usually it means the tenant loses most of their bond.

    • +1

Why would there be damage to the door? You’re installing it on the wall i.e bricks, weatherboard etc. which is easy enough to fill when removing it if you move out.

      • I think they're speaking from experience and their first time using a drill or something.

    • That's not how it works mate

  • Good deal. Bought this doorbell from Epping costco in store on Tuesday. There were 40 or so remaining in stock. Also received a free complimentary faceplate coupon via email from Ring upon registering the doorbell.

  • I have this and the ring spotlight camera.
Both are perfectly good devices, but I HATE the subscription fee, especially since you pay $4/month PER DEVICE.

The spotlight camera was replaced free of charge under warranty as it would not reconnect after charging the battery on one occassion. Support was good and sent a replacement out fairly quickly after some light troubleshooting over the phone.

If I ever need to replace either one, it will not be another ring.
