What are you planning to film and where will you be posting up your videos most of the time?

Video reviews/comparisons on YouTube answer your exact question :)

Even watching those videos comparing X2 vs Hero 10 will help you decide

    • +3

Different use cases. A 360 cam is much more versatile than an action cam, but at the cost of battery life and (usually) raw video quality. The gopro is gonna have a much easier time with accessories and mounts, but doesn't have as many cool or interesting filming modes like hidden-stick 3rd Person or orbit modes. The 360 cam also has much, much better stabilisation due to the nature of the lenses.

This. Go pro heats up like a mf and you may have problems at the snow when it's too cold and it keeps shutting down.

Easy to keep the GoPro in your pocket until you use it, that keeps the battery warm enough. That said, I love the 360cam for snowboarding as you can get multiple angles at once, and you don't need to expend any concentration keeping your subject in focus, just extend the stick and race down the mountain. You do need to keep as close as possible to your subject though, or they look tiny.

GoPro 4k footage is definitely higher res, and clearer, it is also easier to just drop in a timeline in post, you waste less time framing your 360 footage.

        I like both options.

        • I had both going last trip. 360 on the pole and go pro on chest. Was a pain to keep unclipping the go pro and stashing it in the bag until it warmed up. However when it was too cold (such as really heavy snow) it would eventually get too cold and shut down again.

      • Sorry but this is simply wrong.

It can record 24/7 at 30fps which is what you'll want to be using for most of your shots due to how small the sensor is on all action cameras.

It can do 60fps, 120fps etc for quite a while when you are in motion but either way its going to look much better then the insta360.

The too cold issue was fixed with enduro batteries which come with the gopro 11.

i own both, and use both differently. you couldn't technically just go with one, but will have to sacrifice a bit. if you want to get yourself in the shot 360 is the best. if u use it without you in the shot i would go with go pro. 360 is great if you don't want to miss everything around you too because you can always change the pov in post. the go pro isn't that tall and makes it easier to clamp on you or something else and doesn't need as much clearance like the 360.

    • Are you expecting to be holding the selfie stick for everything? Thats going to be your deciding answer.

Personally I would rarely ever want to do that for how overly obvious and obnoxious it can be, but also because I like to have both of my hands generally when I'm doing something.

The Insta360 also always has the "360" field of view look which isn't very good visually in my opinion so you really want to be making good use of the 360 camera for it to be worth it.

Personally I've found the GoPro labs firmware has made GoPro the much better option for high quality recordings.

In my snowboard backpack there is a deep narrow side pocket for a pole, with securing straps. The 3m carbon fibre stick fits perfectly and holds the stick quite stably. So no need to hold the stick.

        • But then you have to carry a backpack while you snowboard? And isn't the weight hanging 3m in front of you very annoying? Can't you accidently hit people with it?

          • +5

@samfisher5986: I always carry a back pack with hydration bladder, tools (ratchet driver, multi tool, food, powerbank, thermal layers, etc etc. We go out the whole day and dont stop for lunch etc. The pole mounts upwards not infront so you get a above drone view. The backpack is a proper snowboard/ski day pack. Has body straps to stop the whole pack moving around. You dont hit anyone unless you bend forwards to look down at your boots lol Video is pretty damn stable even going down steep blacks and off piste. Im using an osprey. Its old but probably equivalent to the current Soelden 22 which appears to have an ice tool carry sleeve and attachment point which is where I stick the 360 pole.

  • Great camera, still using mine every day.

    • what do you use it for?

      • +11

Everything, everyday life. Lunch with the folks, bike ride with the kids, etc. I prefer it over my phone because I'm in the video, and no one pays attention to it. It's already sweet to re-live the moments in VR, but even more so in a few decades when the folks are gone and the kids are adults.

  • Don't suppose anyone know of a free (or free trial) for a site that allows upload of 360 images with depth map, viewable in VR with headtracking?

  • So this is better than the go pro max? Thinking of getting something for an upcoming family holiday.

  • Hehe well managed to get the OneRS + selfie stick (could pick between them all), spare battery, fast charger and lense protector from Jaycar.

Called around every camera shop in Melbourne and no one had stock of anything!

    • It’s the old 7Eleven trick, of course they won’t have stock while it’s on sale…

  • Any good for water sports? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

    • I own one and use it in water park no problem at all. I think specs said it can go up to 10m out of the box.
I used a mount to put on my backpack for 1st person filming too

      • I feel they meant a different type of water sports.

        • +2

still, waterproof to 10m and no sharp edges lol

          • @eggboi: Better off with a romp
