Haier Washer Drier Combo (No Space)

This might just make me more confused but I am wondering about combo washer/drier. I don't need the best, but I live in a place where there's only room for the wahsing machine. The design of the place left too little room above the washing machine. I rent so I am not here forever.

I have a Bosch 8kg (might be 7.5 actually) washer that I have had slight issues with but am not blown away by.

The problem is I really want a drier. I don't have that much space to hang up clothes and find I have more clean clothes when I have a drier (previous place came with one).

I have been looking at combos, but i don't have much to spend. I'm looking at things like the Haier HWD8040BW1 and wondering if it's really THAT bad. I am sure it's not amazing but will it die in a week, or leave my clothes wetter than they went in (somewhat joking there).

I live in Melbourne, not the tropics, so I think a condenser might be OK. I don't think I can drop 2k on a machine that might not come with me to the next place (where I might splurge and get a decent machine AND drier).

Would something like the Haier be OK for a shorter-term unit?

Hi mate. Just FYI, dryer in a combo does not always completely dry your clothes.
Here’s my previous comment about this

I don’t know about Haier, but I am expecting it to perform worse than Bosch/LG.

    • That would be an issue for me. Overloading does seem to be an issue for some

I can't speak for that particular brand or model, but a lot of people dislike washer/dryer combo's because they either aren't using them correctly or don't like the different approach you have to take to doing your washing in them.

With a combo, if you want the clothes to come out dry then you need to make sure that you don't overload it. You also need to expect the clothes to feel slightly damp when you take them out - this feeling should dissipate within a minute or two and the clothes shouldn't actually be damp, it's just to do with the way the machine works.

You also need to have expectations of a full wash and dry cycle taking a few hours. If you are the type of person who has a 'washing day' and likes to get load after load done then a combo may not suit you. I put the machine on before bed or before I go to work in the morning, then just get the clean and dry clothes out when I next remember to - I can't do that with a regular washer so I love how a combo works.

Downside to combos is they are more complex machines so are more likely to have issues. My LG 7/4 combo 10 years ago lasted about 8 years of heavy use without any glitches. My current LG has a design issue that is going to cause regular internal lint problems, so I suspect it may only last the 5 year warranty period, which is a shame as everything else about this machine is absolutely amazing.

    • Yes thanks for that. The overloading factor was something I meant to ask… Given the machine in my example is 8kg wash/4kg dry, it seems obvious to me that it can't handle a full washing load so I guess realistically it's more like… 8KG wash-only, 4KG wash/dry.

My apartment have a Samsung combo, no complaints from the tenants.

Unless the roof is leaking most tenants will be loathe to complain about anything to avoid annoying the owner and not having their lease renewed.

Most landlords, in my experience, will complain extensively about spending a single cent on their properties, and on the off chance that they feel they can't avoid it, will often send an unqualified friend or relative around to have a look who may or may not then make the situation worse, while also commenting on your washing and dust over the door frames.

There is no way anyone I know who is renting would complain about white goods unless they had stopped working completely.

  • A left wing idea but you could become a Costco member and get one of their washer/dryer combo machines. If it isn’t for you then you have 90 days to return it.

Otherwise I would look at the second hand market.

    • I don't hate this idea, seems like they've a limited range though.

      • Costco is a bit like that.

Got one. Takes ages to dry. But it's convenient. As someone mentioned above. I do it at night, morning it's ready to be folded.

If you don't overload, it shouldn't be damp.

  • I hang my clothes on the curtain rod in front of the split system in the colder weather and they're dry within a few hours. Added bonus is it heats the home, too. Is this a possibility at your house?

  • Put drier in garage?

  • I like dryer, it removes lint. Brushing lint by hand is worst part of hanging out clothes.

    • I prefer to line dry.

Then I chuck it in the dryer for 15 mins in air mode to remove the lint.

I get 1-2 cotton ball size of lint per load.

      • I get 1-2 cotton ball size of lint per load.

        Sounds painful.

fine line between pleasure and pain.

  • This might just make me more confused but I am wondering about combo washer/drier. I don't need the best

Combo machines are horrid. The wash/dry cycle is only a tiny load compared to the wash rating, takes 3/4 of a day and if towels can leave fluff everywhere in the machine for the next 'wash' cycle.

I've used these machines twice now in rental places and hated them both.

If you have room elsewhere in the apartment, put a dryer there. A condenser dryer gathers the water so it won't make the room humid if you are worried about that.

Or buy a cheap dryer and put it on the balcony.
