Coles Smart Buy Tuna $0.25 Per Can - Coles Surry Hills (NSW)

770

Saw this tonight at the local Coles. They had three flavours, Lemon and Cracked Pepper, Tomato and Onion, and Tomato and Basil. Great for lunches as long as you're not picky about your tuna! It was marked as a clearance deal, so not sure if it's available in other stores.

Edit: Fixed photo orientation…stupid Mac…

    catfood……..

Down voting because of your personal preferences in tuna?
        Silly reason.

        • +1

ozbargainers are obviously loyal to whomever is the cheapest!
quantity over quality reigns on ozbargain!

    • +2

not good to feed cats straight tuna

      • -1

        Way too slow!

      • @Damo - is that true? I feed my cat small amounts of tuna.

        • -1

Well, think of it this way…I'm not sure if they would get fortified food in the wild…just vary their diet & they'll be fine! ;)

  • +3

buying this for the cat she will love it

    • +23

Do not feed your cat with any food containing onions.
It's toxic to dogs & cats and causes them to lose
      red blood cells.
The other flavors should be OK for cats.

      • +14

Also human tuna lacks essential nutrients cats need. Cat tuna is always fortified.

    • -6

yes, yes, please feed it to your cat :)

  • +3

Catfood? "Great for lunches as long as you're not picky about your tuna!" Poor Dave….

    • Poor Dave? I want to know what John West has to say about this!

      • What I am trying to say is that it is a sad thing that cats have better living conditions than quite a lot of people!

  • +2

    thats a lot of fish

  • +6

I have to agree, don't feed this to any of your beloved pets as it looks to be tomato and onion flavour only.

    It will kill your pets.

  • good food for the ultimate tightass.

  • +14

there's something fishy about tuna this cheap

  • Mmmm.

  • +5

I wouldn't even feed that to my cat.

  • It's not a very good idea to feed canned tuna to cats.. as occasional treats maybe..

It's a sad day when a pensioner can afford "fit for human consumption" food over home brand cat food. However unlike cat food, I don't believe these cans of tuna are fortified with all the essential vitamins and minerals that gives a pensioner a healthy shiny head of hair.

    • I know I shouldn't, but lulz! :)

  • Yum minamata disease.

  • -3

Why do they do this shit to the prices…Thats the problem here stupid customers request for lower and lower prices and the quality does down the drain. 25 cents for a tuna can WTF, what are we actually putting in our mouth

    • +2

Settle, petal. Just enjoy the windfall if you're within cooee of the store! ;)

Look at the pic, clearly somebody stuffed up an order or something leading to overstock in that particular store…it happens from time to time at my locals too & I don't feel a pressing need bust out the tinfoil conspiracy theory hat when I'm offered $2/kg twiggy sticks or something else ridiculously cheap! :p

    • +1

Why do they do this shit to the prices…

items on clearance from supermarkets are commonly 50% to 60% so they sell and the shelf can be filled with items they will get full price for or will sell ongoing. 25c x 5 = $1.25, which is a reasonable price for a coles brand can of tuna

But StewBalls is indeed correct, its either an over order, or an allocation from higher up

I'm no Einstein but i think you might've minced your maths up a little there.

  • According to Greenpeaces report from last year they are not amazing in terms of sustainability. However in one year things may have changed a bit.(http://www.greenpeace.org/australia/en/what-we-do/oceans/Tak…)

OP has a mac and eats 25 cent tuna for lunch ?

    mind blown !

How else do you think s/he can afford the Apple Tax! :p

Safcol is the only brand that sells 100% pole and line caught skipjack Tuna (one of the few species that isn't endangered or threatened).

If you can afford it, please buy responsibly fished tuna. Trawlers catch a lot of species of other marine life that are unnecessarily killed, and damages life on the sea bed.

I know this will probably be flagged as off topic but sometimes it needs to be said that saving a little bit of money is not worth losing a species of animal forever. Sure Safcol is more expensive, but that's because they only catch one species of animal, using more difficult methods of fishing (with a fishing line instead of a big net).

    • +4

I don't eat tuna but this is ione of the most sensible things I've read

    • +1

Plus Safcol tastes great. I happily pay the premium to eat it just because of the taste! (and I'm a notorious tightass lol)

    • +4

I was going to mention this too. I doubt its sustainable. Tuna is a magnificent marine animal (both to eat and as a creature). To know it is being threatened because we stuff them in cans in high volume is no justice to it.

Also this will be helpful, http://www.smh.com.au/environment/conservation/greenpeaces-s…

They separate their brand immediately by advertising catch as line and pole. Greenpeace apparently take it quite seriously as to do audits on these claims of sustainable fishing.

        • +1

          From your SMH link:

2 - Safcol - Dropped purse seine nets in favour of pole and line method; publicly promotes sustainable fishing and the conservation of overfished species; BUT its pole and line tuna not available in stores yet.

          ???

        • Noted, but that was back in Aug 2011. I don't know of recent changes but I'm sure you can find out or will I need to use lmgtfy again?

        • Well, it is your own reference in question; and you do seem to be competent with lmgtfy; so lay on MacDuff! :)

        • +1

          Look at the cans of Safcol Tuna, every time I've seen them at my local supermarket they have 'responsibly fished' and 'pole and line caught' all over them;

          http://www.safcol.com.au/content/environment/gjgk1s

I also suggest that you download the 'shop ethical' app from the app store if you're interested in ethical shopping :) You can save all your favourite foods so you can easily check to see which ones to buy.

The biggest ones to look out for are tea, coffee, tuna, and various packaged products (i.e. Unilever).

          Edit:
          Also on Safcol's front page;
"SAFCOL catches all our tuna by hand, one at a time, using a Pole & Line."
          http://www.safcol.com.au/index.php?linkid=132

          It's also quite a spectacle! Check it out;

        • I'll have a look next time I'm shopping; but I must confess, I tend not to look at things in the supermarket unless there is some form of 'reduced' tag attached! ;)

  • +5

If you've ever tasted this, you'll understand why they can't sell it for more than 25c…

  • down down, prices are down!

  • Ask things talk but what I wanna know is, has anyone seen this at anyother coles?

  • +1

They taste exactly same as the other flavoured little tins, I buy this when its 5 for $4 I use it for sandwiches so its good value like that. But if Im making tuna salad I usually get a good brand as the big tins dont have much difference between them

    • +1

Same, when the name brands aren't on special cheaper then I buy the Coles/Homebrand tuna, nothing wrong with it at all.

As a matter of fact, the Coles branded Japanese Style flavoured tuna is one of the nicest I've found…wasabi & ginger FTW! :)

  • +1

Coles prices are down… so is their sustainable fishing

    • Is the turtle by-catch classed as fishing?

Great price! Time for subway to stock up

Stock up now for the Zombie Apocalypse

  • Nothing at Fairfield Coles, all coles brand tuna is selling at 90c ea.

  • Anyone know if the special is still there? Thinking about going there sometime during the week.

  • Anybody know if this is in VIC?

  • Coles @ The Glen, Glen Waverley had no 95 gms in stock anyway.

  • is there any stock left dont want to go there an end up disappointed?
