      Yep, it's an entry-level Gen4 NVMe. But still, it's dirt-cheap

      • +6

I would rather spend an extraa $12.95 and get the Samsung deal instead.

A TLC PCIe 3.0 SSD with consistent performance is waaaaaayyyyy better than a non consistent QLC PCIe 4.0 drive.

        • -1

QLC is the future so it might need a few years until optimised

          • +4

@bcYield: Do we buy it and put in the cellar for a few years?

            • @pizzaguy: I mean QLC in general cuz some people have neg feelings about it. Look back a few years ago TLC was in the same situation, less warranty and speed. I could be worng

              • @bcYield: MLC = 2 bit per cell, TLC = 3 bit per cell, QLC = 4 bit.

                per MLC have 4 states: 00, 01, 10, 11
                per TLC have 8 states: 000, 001, 010, 011, 100, 101, 110, 111
                per QLC have 16 states 0000, 0001……1110, 1111

when the cell is half discharged (cold data), it's very hard to determine which state its in, especially when there's too much state.

                • @OMGJL: Yes more bit rates per cell cause confusions and error rates so it sacrifices some data rate to make sure the data is transfered successfully hence slower speed and this will get better overtime

        • NV2 is gen 4 so it can be used on a ps5, not for its speeds.

I think its important you put NV2 in the title/description, because the rest of it is very generic and could refer to any of their NVMe SSDs.

Id very much recommend going with this https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/765681 instead
DRAM + TLC + Gen3 will be better than No Dram + QLC + Gen4

Can you offset the extra carbon emissions for delivery from the US ?

      • +10

Package is tiny. Plane was going to fly regardless

      • +2

Assuming it's not already made in the US (it is an American company after all) and needs to be needlessly shipped here…

If it's transported by ship it's actually incredibly efficient, shipping a 100 gram package from the US to here incurs maybe 10g of CO2 according to this site - https://www.carboncare.org/en/co2-emissions-calculator.html. For comparison, across the automotive industry, the average emissions for all new passenger cars and small-to-medium SUVs was 146.5 grams of CO2 per km.

It's likely the postie creates as much CO2 delivering it from the post office to your house than it does crossing the ocean. Ships are incredibly efficient, however because we ship a huge amount of stuff very long distances that shipping is a carbon problem we need to tackle.

But if it makes you feel better, you can buy Australian carbon credits for about $40 a tonne, 10g of CO2 would be $0.0004 to offset. If they flew it by plane it'd be about 2 cents instead.

Thank for your detailed reply! The world is fragile and net zero is important for all!

    • I second this
Samsung is well worth the $12 additional

NV line (like crucial Px) can contain inconsistent components and might claim to meet certain speeds the real world use is inferior compared to the higher sku’s

They’re not bad products - they’re cheap and reliable BUT if you can stretch a few bucks and go the better model on discount you will thank yourself later

    • Would it help to think this way:

Good body shape + Rich + Old will be better than Poor body shape+ Poor + Young

  • Great price for a SSD, 1 TB and only $79,

It has been at that price for a while and it's been mentioned in comments on OzB - I honestly thought it's a regular price and didn't even thought of posting.

  • cheap

  • Are these better than an ssd? I keep seeing comments here from people saying that some ssd are bad because they are dramless, so thought maybe i could put one of these on an adaptor to turn it into a sata (if that is even possible)

    • What

      • Sorry, was writing on mobile. Could these be used on laptopts/devices (e.g. PS4) that were designed to take only 2.5'' HDD/SDD via an adaptor? Are these better quality than a dramless SSD?

        • +1

You don’t do that. A m.2 and a 2.5” is roughly the same cost, but the latter will be SATA, slightly slower than NVMe in real world unless you’re transferring very large files often. M.2 also comes in SATA but this one is NVMe.

    • This drive would be faster than a sata SSD yes. It will not be worth it to change it with a adaptor, as it will cost a bit. Because its a Gen4 M key drive it will be hard to find a cheap adaptor for a sata cable, as most require a PCIe slot not a sata cable. you can get something like this from Ugreen to add to your PC with a drive like this, but I would recommend just saving for a newer motherboard/cpu upgrade if you motherboard can not support it natively. - https://www.amazon.com.au/UGREEN-NVMe-Adapter-M-Key-B-Key/dp…
This drive is good for something like a game install drive. Cheap, Dont right to it alot, fast enough to load your games ok. If it dies, not the end of the world, can replace and redownload.
Most would not recommend for a drive you need to write/copy large files too all the time and endurance and speed are factors.

  • I always get excited when I see prices like this then realise I already have way too much storage so don't need any more.

    • You need to hoard more data then!

  • any suggestions for a fast 1TB storage for a 2015 MacBook pro?

    • -1

      usb? or replace internal disk?

  • Wen 4TB?

    • That's an uncommon name.

  • It's showing as in stock for me with delivery tomorrow from the Perth warehouse, only 5 left. Make that 4, I just bought one as a secondary drive to complement my Cruicial P5 Plus 500GB system drive.

    Thanks OP.
