Is this essentially just an IR blaster or does it have more features? Seems pricey if it can do the same things that a Broadlink RM4 mini can do or something else at a much lower price.

    • yeah, i had been using Broadlink for my dumb AC with so much success for about $30

For me I buy this because I don't need to mess around with IR blasters. This comes packaged and has a nice app, HomeKit integration, and it just (largely) works.

I didn't have to do much messing around for my Broadlink if I am totally honest, it has pretty much every major make and model available. The only thing that gets a bit funny is running it with homekit, but thats still a pretty hefty premium just for homekit, I got a Raspi running homebridge as a solution so now it works on homekit but if I didn't want to mess around with that I'd probably just run the A/C off a separate app from the homekit.

  • Are there any paid subscription requirements? I've been stung by Sensibo which spams the app with adds for their subscription service.

  • I've had mine for about 2.5 years. Afaik, these were the only native HomeKit-compatible AC controller for a while, but now Sensibo came out with Sky Air that's also compatible out of the box. I bought Tado because it was all that was available for HomeKit and I didn't want to mess around with Home Assistant, but if I did it now I'd try out the Sensibo since they are a bit more well known.

Tado is good once it's set up but it's not entirely intuitive to get it working correctly with an unrecognised AC brand (might be better now?), Tado support is trash, but the community forum is helpful. Also note that in the HomeKit app with either Tado or Sensibo that you can't turn on dehumidify or other modes, can only set it to heat/cool and change the temp, but this is a limitation of HomeKit, not Tado.

  • I have 2 outdoor ceiling fans, would this also work for them? Know it's not AC but I'd be keen on something for all of these

  • I'd like to get something like this, but my ducted aircon doesn't have a remote. Is there any device like this that somehow works for AC without remotes?

      I had the same requirement.

I ended up buying a wifi controller for my make / brand (Daikin).

In my instance, I used existing cables from the aircon main board to the controller in the house and replaced the controller in the house with the wifi controller.

You may need to look at something like this for your make / brand.
