Is this better than the Nexus 7?

    • +12

Does this question really have to be asked in EVERY 7.7/Nexus bargain thread??

      • +2

Yeah, how dare you ask for assistance

    • -2

Nexus 7 is better, it has quad core this dual core. Go for Nexus

        • +5

How about you stop dropping 'fanboy this, fanboy that' in comments?

        • +10

          thanks for the laugh neg-boy

        • "looks" more useable. really?? How is make judgements by simply looks (not design related) any better than only comparing specs.

        • -4

Well I hope it is because after using ICS on my Android tablet it's an ugly mess.

    • did you even try and have a look first? FYI, I would definitely go Nexus

      • Nexus is sold out everywhere pretty much.

    • +36

N7 is better than GT 7.7 in some areas; GT 7.7 is better than N7 in other areas.

      • CPU - N7 better
      • GPU - N7 generally wins (not always though)
      • Video Playback (inc. 1080p mkv) - Tie
      • RAM - Tie
      • Flash ROM speed - Dunno (probably tie)
      • Build - GT 7.7
      • Thickness - GT 7.7
      • Weight - Tie
      • OS - N7
      • Camera - GT 7.7
      • MicroSD - GT 7.7 (Yes) - No MicroSD slot on N7
      • USB OTG - GT 7.7 (Yes, but HDD requires extra power unless it is SSD - special cable required); N7 (Non storage devices are fine; storage devices not possible until rooted; power issue like GT 7.7 applies)
      • HDMI out - GT 7.7 (Yes - Need special adaptor); N7 has no HDMI output support.
      • NFC - N7 (Yes); GT 7.7 has no NFC support
      • Screen - Subjective (That's make it a tie)
      • Resolution - Tie (same 1280x800)
      • Battery - GT 7.7
      • Wifi - Tie (a/b/g/n)
      • Freebie - N7 ($25 Google Play Credit); GT 7.7 (Navigon GPS) - so N7 wins this one?
      • Minor point: GT 7.7 can do a screen capture with a press of an on-screen button without rooting the device.

Go through the above, set up a table and put weighting on each category and work out which one is your winner. Also, don't forget the important non-technical factor: price.

      • I vote for GT7.7

      • +1

I would weight the OS at around 50% so Nexus 7 is the winner for me. Even moreso when the next version of Android is released, the Nexus 7 gets it almost immediately and the GT7.7 is on Samsung's scrap-pile.

        • +2

The weighting is important. Some points may be very important. Some points above may actually be not important at all.

Again, each person has his/her own view. The list is not in any particular order (intentionally). You are the best person to decide which one is the better buy.

My current view: when correctly priced, both are selling like hot cakes so they are both good. There will be newer, better tablets coming so there is no need to feel too strongly towards one or another. The key here is to get it at a good price (or if possible, bargain price).

      • You missed one point I'd like added to the list GT7.7, it has 7.7" screen not 7" hence is 10% larger. Hence one can argue 10% less weight for the extra screen space? Might sound nothing but 10% larger screen is personally speaking hard to ignore when you actually use it to browse on the internet.
Sammy all the way for me!

        • +4

Its actually 17% more screen area.

        • Not sure it works like that.
          Resolution - Tie (same 1280x800)

Is it more screen with same pixels?

        • FYI… I was thinking about putting it in, but I really don't want to declare a winnner on the screen (as much as I want to, it is simply too subjective).

Yes, screen size, Samsung is bigger, but then, one can also argue N7 has better pixel density. As most Web sites generally declare them as equal, I thought I do the same.

Thus, if you strongly believe GT7.7 has a superior screen, simple - adjust the result for the screen to make GT 7.7 a winner. Likewise, if you are an IPS fan, change it to N7 being the winner.

Cannot change the post anymore… so the revised version:

Screen: Subjective (You decide which one is the winner - best to try them out)

        • Yes it works like that. Would you rather watch a 42" TV at 1080P or a 50" TV at 1080P

        • 50"

      • I just took a screenshot on my N7 by simultaneously pressing the power and volume down button. No rooting required.

  • +3

To me, yes..better screen and comparable processor with Nexus. Superb battery life. Just that you dont get Jelly Beans

    • +1

Not JB yet but the 3G version already have 4.0.4, so this should receive 4.0.4 soon.

      Or install it yourself.

      • +2

Chances are it will never get Jelly Bean from Samsung. And those Jelly Beans make a big difference to performance, particularly UI responsiveness. And of course, there is zero chance this will get Key Lime Pie (or whatever) and the Nexus 7 definitely will. Also, you get access to Tegra Zone games on the Nexus.

Biggest draw of this over the Nexus is the microSD.

        • -2

That and the samoled+ , and the premium build/materials. Only thing n7 has going for it is stock android and 2 extra cores that nobody needs.

        • +1

Cores and JB is more important or SUPER AMOLED + 0.7" more is more important !!!!!!!

        • +2

Nexus 7's bezels are too wide..very ugly. I guess it's not as thin as GT7.7.

        • -3

          Samoled is very overrated.
The colours are off and it's crap under the sun.

        • +1

The IPS display on the N7 is nothing to write home about too. They sort of botched the display according to some reviewers.

        • +4

          it's crap under the sun

I'm yet to see any backlit screen that's any good under the sun…

        • +3

My S2 seems to work fine in the sun…?

        • +2

Does your S2 come with a matte screen (rather than the glossy finsh)? Or you use a matte screen protector?

Glossy screen generally don't work well under the sun.

        • -1

I hate the Super OMOLED screen, that yellow tinge is terrible.

        • Sources close to Samsung have said they expect the SGT 7.7 to get JB. No sweat if it doesn't eventuate, ICS runs like a rocket on it anyway.

        • +2

I actually use a glossy clear screen protector.

I'm not sure what all the fuss is about - when my phone is in the sun, the automatic brightness kicks up to full power and it's perfectly readable.

        • +1 about 2 extra cores that nobody needs

        • +3

When it comes to screen technologies, the opinion can be very subjective.

That's why I don't want to go into IPS vs AMOLED. I can go on with E-IPS, H-IPS, S-IPS, AMOLED, AMOLED+, Colour gamut, known issues with IPS and AMOLED.

The reality is each technologies has its pros and cons. Under direct sunlight, LCD screens and AMOLED screens still have big room to improve.

        • I used s, s2 nexus and family has 10.1v, 10.1 and 10.1 tab 2…
          I know this is 7.7.

imo the display isn't that great. amoled, & super amoled and now the plus…. It's just super bright.

Nexus 7 colour is more natural..
          I've never used an iphone.

        • +2

Don't know where you're getting the "Nexus 7 colours more natural" when general consensus right is that the N7 colours are somewhat washed out.

        • +2

Before people rave about N7's IPS screen, based on the cost of N7 and its colour gamut result, it is most likely E-IPS. Yes, it does have viewing angle close to H-IPS/S-IPS, but it is not in the same class as them.

AMOLED being "too bright"… it can be argued that IPS has contrast shift issue (+ it needs a stronger backlight to be bright enough). Yellow tinge on AMOLED, well IPS has a different colour issue (it has one too).

Don't get me wrong. My main monitor uses H-IPS screen. As much as I like IPS, it has its issues too. Try to be objective if you can.

If N7 used H-IPS or S-IPS, then it would be an interesting fight. E-IPS, to be honest, saying it being equal to AMOLED+ is already being nice. P.S. the new iPad obviously used a better IPS technology to give AMOLED+ a run for its money.

Both screens are good. Neither one is fantastic.

        • +2

I hate the Super OMOLED screen, that yellow tinge is terrible.

Just add some bleach in with the OMO to fix that!

        • My SGS2 has a glossy standard finish - factory default, no screen cover. It's just as bad in the sun as any other phone, like the SGS1.

    • i both 7.7 and nexus 7 - i like the Samsung better.
Having the expandable memory is a bonus.
too bad ICS update isn't available in Aus yet. as a result, the nexus 7 is much smoother with its processor and jelly bean.
Still, the samsung is thinner and build quality feels better.

      • You can install ICS 4.0.4 yourself even if it's technically not available yet in Australia.

        • install it legitimately? if it aint legit, itll void the warranty. ill just wait til i get the notification.

        • I can't say definitively if it is 'legitimate' or void your warranty but it uses Samsung protocols to update the firmware. And it is official Samsung firmware after all.

Worst case you can always flash it back to stock.

      • will it be comfortable to read pdf magazine with this device?

        • +1

theres a little lag for scroll up/down/turning pages with pdf docs - but its readable.
screeens abit small though - you'll probably benefit more from having a larger screen.

        • mr_vino must be talking about pdf's on HC, because on ICS it is smooth in ezPDF.

        • the reason I'm asking this because normally pdf book has wide margin, make the text smaller. and it hard to read without zooming-in the page.

Again for reading magazine, do you need to zoom-in to be able to read the text?

        • +1

PDF ebook like Microsoft eBook I found that even a bit hard to read with iPad size.

          Still have to zoom in.

        • I've got the original SGT (7 inch) and it's too small to read magazines. Still need to do a lot of zooming in portrait mode.

        • +1

          Yes.
I'd imagine you would have to zoom a little even on a 10" tab reading magazines in pdf format.

  • I am thinking to get this one but I have to get rid of my A501 32GB 3G.

    • can i have it? lol :P

      • +1

Yes but with a price not free:p

  • 1024 x 600 screen res. Is this a issue with apps? Usually I see a res of 1280 x 800 now days even on Nexus 7.

  • +2

SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY

Not half an hour ago I was posting that I wouldn't buy that other deal and was waiting for $299 shipped, and then this!

    • your wish came true! :D

and as much as I don't care about Sd storage, the SAMOLED and build quality and slightly bigger screen sure are tempting me for this over the nexus 7 (since I am an optimist and assume someone on xda will hack some jelly beans into it at some point).

but then again I don't really need another tablet…

    • go for it Stumo, I bit the bullet…pickup after work!

      • Did the store call you or email you to let you know when? I've just noticed that PayPal have given them the wrong phone number.

        • Not yet but I assume instock as indicated, HN on the way home so will swing past and try my luck

        • +1

Mine says you have to wait for the store to contact you.

I couldn't wait so I got one pricematched at Officeworks , in case this HN one goes tits-up.

$264.10. They only had one left between my 2 local OW's

        • nice work. :)

  • bloody hell… paid more for this at mobileciti…………………………. $309 a few weeks ago.

    • +3

this is the second time you've posted this. guess what, we don't care.

  • On the HN webpage it says this one is dual core. Is this correct? The Nexus 7 is quad core right?

    • Yes dual core but not Tegra processor. Samsung's processor is much better than Tegra

      • +1

Could you please explain how? Tried looking for benchmarks however couldn't find a direct comparison between the Tegra 3 T30L and Exynos 4210.

  • Damn, what would you guys go for 16 or 32GB……..for $70 diff, these can take up to 64mb…..

    • since it takes SD cards, go the 16.

    • Well it depends if you want 32 + 64…

  • Excellent deal.

Just wish we could get some similar deals for the 3G model.

    • +1

Exactly no point getting a Wifi-only model.

Same one with HSPDA/3G Connectivity would be a steal.

I do not and never understand why the price difference is huge between wifi only and 3G + Wifi!

      • +6

Well the actual module is only a few bucks but I guess the prices separation is all about marketing.
A lesson well learned from Apple's unique and fab-tabulous, gold-class flash memory that makes a 32GB model insanely dearer than a 16GB one. :p

        EDIT for the fan-bots
Its OK though, cause its Apple and that makes it "magic"

        • +2

3G would be great and all, but you need to ask yourself… is it worth the $300 extra?

        • And the humongous increase from a $169 ipod touch to a $700 iphone. With a few tweaks here and there of course

      • Perhaps there's more than just installing the little chip, such as regulatory compliance?

        • +2

No more than any $29 (retail) 3G phone/dongle
Scaled up to Samsung's production numbers, a miniscule cost.

        • Yeah I dunno why we never got the 3G, since the original P1000 had 3G. Perhaps because the 8.9 3G here is sold by Telstra, or because worldwide supply of the 7.7 seemed to be a bit haphazard overall.

      • Exactly no point getting a Wifi-only model……., don't understand this comment…Have you heard of hotspot, no point having another sim when you dont use all the data on your phone plan.

Additional 3G antenna, circuit board, is they're justification for additional sell price.
Bare in mind the 3G version of this makes and receives calls, so it is effectively a phone.

        • Sure its a justification for some increased cost but not $300!

          Oh really?
The 3G makes/takes calls? Great, didn't realize. I knew the Tab 2 did.
I have been searching for something to replace the wifes old Optus My tab. She likes carrying an "everthing" device all in one.
No I want one even more!

        • Agreed, but they make money, and lots of it….
has an earpiece up the top of the screen

  • is 7.7 will be ideal to read pdf, like magazine?

    • +1

Not sure if ideal, but it's certainly the best available from any manufacturer.

  • this deal is online only and i called stores and they don't have stocks anymore. plus when i click add to cart it came out with error lol

    • weird, as one of my chosen postcode had pickup option the other two didn't, make me think its in stock at store…..now I wonder

      • Some postcode have pick up option.

        • So assume they are stocked at these stores?

  • +1

    WI-FI + 4G telstra dongle = bulky 4G 7.7.

I have the 3G model, but paid $660 for it in March. This @$278 is extremely cheap. I don't think it's going to be much cheaper than this.

  • No stock for 16GB version the get the 32GB version for 348

  • Alright you guys have convinced me its time for a tablet.
Need one for reading pdf at school. Hope 7.7" is big enough.
    Selected in store pickup.
Failed CC, wanted some SMS code which i havent set up.
    Had to use paypal.
Now waiting on store to confirm pickup.

  • It's kind of dumb that this 7.7 inch has a resolution of 1280, whilst the new galaxy tab 2 7inch has only a resolution of 1024x600
