I just helped my father-in-law purchase a laptop from Ozbargain and now I need to get him sorted with Microsoft Office.
Am I after office Mirosoft Office old-school or Office 365?
Also where is the best (cheapest) place to buy it from?

Legitly its all around the same price. If you have O365 family, you can just add him as one of your 5 family members.
Other option is just to use O365 online in a web browser. Has most of the functionality and is free. Just need a free Microsoft account.

yep. I use "Windows Mail" app on Win10 for Outlook address and Gmail web based one.

What does he need to use it for? That's the key thing.
If he uses Skype, Onedrive, wants to access files on his phone then go with 365. But if he just wants to write his memoir in Word then buy 2021.
I bought my Office 2021 from Digital Software Planet (based in Sydney) - found them through looking on OzBargain as a previous deal.
Later had to get another one for my husband (we didn't take advantage of the multiple licence…) - bought the basic and were given the professional as it was a special.
Very easy to deal with…especially for luddites.
When you say cheapest are you referring to only legit means?
You can obtain pirated keys for a few dollars but here is not the place to ask about that.

He doesn't do that much with Office - retired guy general home admin type stuff.
Paying a recurring Office 365 fee with bells and wistles which won't be used seems like a poor use of a pension.
I guess, therefore that I am after a pay once and forget it Office 2019 or somesuch type deal.
