Typical idiots on this site need to calm down. He literally just posted. Give the guy time to revise.

    • +5

If they clicked on the link, they would have seen the price faster then they commented.

On the submit deal page it says:

Please include price, shipping costs, merchant, product name or model number in the title (max 128 chars)

      • +4

OP had included the merchant and product name, LGTM!
        /s

There should be an "and" there shouldn't it? Right now it's only asking for one of any

looks & cuts like a $40 knife but cost $4!

  • +2

Slightly OT, but has anyone purchased a JerryRigKnife?

    • +1

I wanted to, but that cost more than I want to pay…

  • +2

The ones that fold up are a lot better. You can also get more modern designs like thiswhich don't require a screw driver to access the blades.

    • this design is so much better, i rarely changed my blade when i had to unscrew to open but the new design (even el-cheapo SCA) is so much better to use

    • +2

I am thinking of going back to one like this because I have problems with both the types you suggest.

I’ve damaged more than one item unboxing things with a full length blade, I find that retracting to a few mm of blade means speed + precision over a longer blade which is either/or. The fold up types also take longer to open/close so incentivise leaving the blade exposed as well as being unadjustable.

It’s not super frequent but the number of times I’ve accidentally activated the ‘quick change mechanism’ and flung the spare blades across the room while cutting a box is a few dozen times more frequent than I change a blade.

If your use is different YMMV. If I was cutting things other than boxes I might prefer something else.

    • Thought I was in bizzaro world with no one mentioning that OP link style utility cutters are a pain in the neck to live with and not super nice to use.

I vastly prefer the style you linked - I like folding ones but my partner has problems with their hands and the folding mechanism is uncomfortable - do I mostly get the slightly bulkier fixed position ones.

I'm a qualified electrician, DIY nut and tool addict and if you want the best utility knife that is basically indestructible get this:

    https://www.amazon.com.au/Fixed-Blade-Utility-Knife-Holster/…

Yes, much more expensive than above but it will last forever

I've had mine since I was an apprentice - which was many, many moons ago.

      First review:

2.0 out of 5 stars Casting quality has declined. Does the job just.

Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 16 November 2022

Casting quality is not great compared to one i’ve had about a decade. Photos are of an old non-retractable and new retractable. The thread hole and casting and tap for the locking wheel is poor and comes loose to easily. There is also less thread depth.

No one makes stuff like they used to :(

      • +2

Fair enough - and you're right.

Mine was made in the UK but not sure where they're made now.

        • Take a guess

          Hint: not the UK.

    • +3

      Hmm.

Unfortunately, I need one with a built-in tracking feature otherwise the long lasting quality is redundant for me.

      • Built-in tracking feature?

        • Doesn't matter how long it lasts if you can't find the blimmin' thing

    • Looks good but LOL at Amazon's 2nd picture showing it cutting 19mm? melamine board and destroying the edge at the same time!

      • +1

        It's gyprock.

        • doh! that makes more sense. I'm currently cutting melamine boards so I see them everywhere.
Still the broken corner isn't a good look.

    • I thought the Milwaukee Fastback was the Rolls Royce of knives?

  • +1

    https://www.bunnings.com.au/stanley-interlock-fixed-blade-ut…

Nothing beats the precision of a fixed blade if you don't need to carry a retractable one around in your pocket.

The Milwaukee fastback is pretty good too if you want a folding one

    • Yes, Milwaukee knives are very good too. Also Japanese-made NT Cutter knives if you can get them.

    • I prefer retractable because you can extend part way and don’t have to be as careful when opening boxes that you’ll damage the contents with a partially retracted blade.

Yes, being able to pocket it and retract for safety is helpful too.

  • +9

Wife told me I already have a 6-Inch Classic.

  • Super sturdy box cutter.. but that blade storage requires a screw driver means it can be a pain if you’re dulling lots of blades.

Personally I think the Stanley Fatmax is better because it has a push button so you can access blades much more easily.

Still, virtually indestructible tool in this one.

  • +4

I bought a ton of these below for work

    https://www.totaltools.com.au/134307-mastercraft-retractable…

    $2.70

    • Says they weigh Net Weight (kg) 0.06.
So you purchased 16,667 of them? Couldn't have got much change from $45,000.

  • Not sure it is only me or not, These utility knives always remind me the scary scenes in movies.

  • +1

I ditched the oldschool stanley for a Kinchrome folding knife. Super happy with it.

Would rate it a solid 9/11 boxcutter.

    • I agree . Folding knifes are a lot stronger and easier to use . I would never go back .

  • +2

    this is the normal price?

  • A pain to replace blade on.

  • Decent knife. had one in my toolbox for nearly 10 years.

  • This is another great little knife to have in your toolbox:

    https://www.totaltools.com.au/115927-stanley-fatmax-80mm-fol…

Excellent when you want a bit of a longer blade and the serrated bit is good if you need to do a quick, light saw. The blade really needs to be sharpened up out of the box but it does keep an edge. My son, who's an infantry soldier, got one (he kept borrowing mine!) and some of the other guys in his unit have them too. They like it as a general purpose light knife to carry to cut cord, light branches, food etc.

    • Substantially more expensive though? $34.35, (delivery cost not tracked down)

      • If cost is your major driving factor then, yes it is substantially more expensive. I don't think 35 bucks is a lot to pay for a decent quality folding knife but we all see things differently.

    • How do you sharpen the blade?

  • +1

I think this knife or similar came free with this deal last year. Good free knife that I've been using to open my packages since. Chisels also very good for the price.https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/741643

    • Ditto this, it's most certainly the same knife. Never had the old school one before but it has been super handy to have

  • Finally decided to pull the trigger on a half decent one.

    It’s actually called a

    Multi-position blade slide

  • +2

This is the normal price everywhere all the time.

    • +3

Yeah these upvoted posts shake my faith in OzB community

      • What the heck - since when did our community front page a 'deal' that was the normal price?!?
This place has gone to hell.
The deals just don't cut it anymore…

        • I see what you did there LOL

        • Give it a neg. You know you want to. It's not a deal.

  • +1

this or this with 5 replaceable blades or wait for the next bargain. I don't need a new knife yet

    • +1
      • 12 min drive or $5.09 delivery for 1 and $7.89 delivery for 2+

Seem worth grabbing a few and without the need of replacing the knife

  • +3

its been around $10 for years, not a deal

    • But with free delivery?

      • yeah but not sausage from bunnings though :-)

  • +1

    Penis joke

  • +1

Wow 65 upvotes for a non deal, seems like no-one is paying attention. Negging, as this is the normal price.

    • Tbh, I am just as surprise as you are. There must be a real need for a box cutter deal like this.

    • No, we know it's normal price, doesn't make it a non-deal to us.

  • This with Fatmax blades is the shiz

  • -2

A few of these and a few friends and you got yourself a September 11 starter kit!

  • Are there any differences in the blades? I cut a bit of carpet every now and then doing stuff around the house, found the blade to go fairly quickly. It rusts and leaves a bit of stain on the carpet unless I clean it first. Are $2 shop replacements sufficient?

  • +1

    Bunnings Standard price $9.85 https://www.bunnings.com.au/stanley-retractable-trimming-kni…

I know that not everyone can get to Bunnings, so good to order if you are in Prime for the free delivery.

Recession and EOFY coming there is going to be a big drop in prices to offload stock as companies batten down the hatches.

I would recommend holding the line on any major purchases or you might get buyer regret later in the year.

  • It's hoped people are doing their due diligence like a good Ozbargainer should and seeing similar units at Bunnings;
    https://www.bunnings.com.au/products/tools/hand-tools/saws-k…
There are some cheaper units but also at least 3 Stanley versions that are cheaper or same pricing…

    • Lol…had i been doing my due diligence, I wouldn't have a shed full of power tools i dont need.
