  • Is this for car or for general house purpose

    • I'm sure you can use it for both. It's general purpose tools.

    • +6

      Robot maintenance.

    • +3

      Yes.

    • -1

      It’s for the trash can

      • +2

Bit much to spend for mother's Day isn't it?

        • +2

Yes but she needs something to go with the Footy

      • +1

        This guy is right.

    • +4

Its mainly for general purpose but you can secretly use it on cars but make sure no one sees you

    • It wouldn't be the only toolkit you'd have if you worked on things that needed it often. But many people I know who work on cars and even in heavy industries have kits like this just for the convenience and portability factor.

They'll tend to use the good stuff if driving to a big job anyway. But if you want something small (relative) to toss in the back of the car this still isn't a bad way to go.

  • +16

    $459 bit of a stretch

  • Haahah thinking the same thing.

  • +6

Why would you need an imperial sockets and spanners today?

Perhaps if you work on old American cars, other than that everything has been metric in Australia for decades

    • Plenty of US product is sold into Aus, so still lots of need for it. My Cub Cadet commercial ride on mower is made in the US, so yep, everything is Imperial. Hell, my Aus made Greenfield is all imperial too.

      • Fair enough but I don’t own any US made equipment.

I guess spark plug sockets are the only time I use imperial sizes tools.

    • -1

There is no need for imperial sockets and spinners for common sized hex bolts.

The only thing different is the thread pitch. You can’t use a metric thread for imperial and visa versa

      https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSS4RWk…

Imperial is a waste of time and space. I’ve sent so many imperial tools from kits to scrap metal, I haven’t bought imperial since 1998

      • +8

Maybe if you are only interacting with hardened steel bolts with low torque applications.
Don't come near my stuff with your acceptance of poor tolerances and start to round edges off.

        • -7

If you're buying products with imperial fasteners, you shouldn't.

Would you buy a thermometer in Fahrenheit?

          • +2

@PlaunsJanus: I am sure you think that analogy makes sense, but that is a deeply flawed thought process.

            • +1

@snuke: I'd say it's about as sound as defending imperial.

              • @PlaunsJanus: Lol I'd like to see it phased out hard. Unless you've got legacy items, no new install should have imperial, if needed chuck an adapter to convert an old fitting to metric lol.

We're still decades behind on pipes and gas fittings.

Also like to see coffee come to metric sizes as well. That has no good reason to stay imperial imo.

      • +5

You need Imperial sockets becase the Empire always strikes back!

    • +2

I have a 1967 Falcon ute. All fasteners are imperial.

      • +1

As expected for a 55yo car.

And that's an exception to the rule

Most people to drive <20yo car which are all metric.

        • Of course, definitely not the norm. Funny but true, it is my only car. has been for about 15 years.

          • @revheadgl: That's awesome.

I'm assuming it's easy to work on too.

Having said that, I've never driven, let alone worked on a car that had drum brakes and carburetors.

            • +1

@JimB: A lot easier than working on newer cars.

It has disk brakes and is fuel injected. Is supercharged and has Holley throttle body injection running wideband o2 sensor. My avatar pic is the engine.

Even has aircon. Got to have some mod cons, lol.

              • @revheadgl: Fantastic.

                Must go like the clappers.

                air cond- living in luxury!

                • @JimB: Yeah, it gets along pretty well. :)

                  • @revheadgl:

Yeah, it gets along pretty well. :)

Passes everything… Except the petrol station:)

                    • @danyool: Haha, if you're lead footed its horrendous. Has a small tank too, I think its about 50L But on the highway it can do up to 11L/100Kms, so not so bad.

              • @revheadgl: Aircon! Luxury!

Edit: Oops, see JimB has already said that.

  • How is it comparing to this Stanley Mechanics Tool Kit 269 Piece

  • stanley's middle name is jack? never knew that!

  • For how often you use it in a recreational or hobby capacity, there are better deals out there.
I'm still really happy with my ToolPRO 216 Piece Tool Kit - though was slightly bigger than I expected so doesn't quite fit in the drawers in the car. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/535098

  • +1

$459 is a big stretch. This is worth $159 though; although just. I am unsure whether it's much of a 'bargain'.

  • Just check the spanners as the ones I got in a similar set are pretty bad!

  • Can we pay down the entire amount with vouchers and then check out with Zip ..or do we actually need a Zip account?
Also what is the overall metal-cheese rating with these?

    • +1

You can use gift cards but you need to pay some of the order with Zip. I purchased exactly $126.49 in eBay gift cards and paid $1 with Zip.

Edit: According to others you can pay the whole balance with a gift card and still use Zip to checkout and get the discount.

  • Is anyone having trouble buying it with zippay?

  • I would have brought this if the seller wasn’t forcing me to sign up to Zip. In my opinion, shame on these companies that are doing these deals with buy now pay later strings attached.

    • +1

Pay with gift cards and you don’t need zip pay, but can still get the discount.

  • Can find a very decent set for similar price on Amazon

  • +1

Good all in one kit without having to really buy any additional pieces; the allen keys in holster, screwdrivers and pliers are usually pieces you need to buy additional kits for. Great set for the house.

My only suggestion would be to buy a tool bag and socket rails to keep as the hard case isn't ergonimical to use.

  • I really wish there were sets that were smaller and just include the most commonly used sizes with duplicates instead of the waste that fills most of these cases.

  • Got it from SCA for 138 with 8% discount on SCA Gift card through my work. Was in need of some of the stuff in kit. Kit seems pretty good with most of everyday use tools.

    • How is the metal quality?

      • +1

        Haven't picked yet

      • See below for my half arsed review

      • +1

So i worked on my car today. Had to replace door and guard damaged in accident. Kit was really heavy. Product quality is really nice. Small ratchet really helped going in tight spaces and extension was really useful. None of the tools were falling when i opened the kit and everything sits nice and firmly. Am happy with it.

  • You can use Ebay gift cards for me I used $125 and Zip Payed $2.49 .

    • Do you know if it is possible to use giftcards for the whole purchase?

      • +2

It is, that’s what I did. I do t have zip pay.

      • Gud to know .

  • -4

…Feel bad for the people who purchased this thinking it's a quality set…

It's never sold for the RPP, it's only stocked in stores during promotional pricing or giveaway events as it has 0 sales at RRP.

    • I've held out on buying so could you please recommend me a quality set for $128?

      • -4

…Not looking for homework or role-play as a salesman. DYOR.

        • +7

That’s a shame, you seem like a wealth of knowledge and was really looking forward to your insight on a superior option for a similar price.

          • -6

@h0mbre: Thank you, but you have to stop leaching off other peoples time.

            • +4

@Heaps for Cheaps: Maybe you can spend some of your precious time and invest in a high quality sarcasm detector.

The only leech here is you, exerting effort and time to post BS but not to post suggestions of alternatives or better deals.

Seems like you’re only here to take not give.

  • +3

I picked this up, had a 5 second look over it. Noticed a rattle when I took it out of the store. Allen keys and dropped out of their compartment, a few wrenches had moved and bucked together. So as far as cases go, it’s a bit shite as this will always be an issue, lots of the tools aren’t locked in place with firm force.

Tools themselves, nice and shiny all around, decent but not something you’re going to get excited about.
Better than my budget bunnings set, miles below all of my workshop quality tools, but this is what I expected.

  • +3

@Hemps for Cheap . U say never sold at RRP but selling multiple times above $300 is gud enough :)

  • +1

I have this. Pretty good but do feel you are better off buying what you need. This is bulky and the items on the lid don't stay, it drops when you try to close it

  • Gone one to try, thanks OP
