good deal! Now to convince my wallet to come out from hibernation…

    • +6

High interest rates, you should keep your wallet in hibernation.

      • +8

high inflation, spend before prices rise

  • +3

I released the moths, was about to buy it yesterday when it was in the $90's, glad I waited.

    • +2

Only ever seen it in the low $90s

    • +3

Yeah I bought it at 73 yesterday and saw on ozbargain it was popular @ $90 so thought.. hmm I would use this like once a year at this stage of my life but seems popular. Will use later in life

      • +7

There's also just a satisfactory feeling of having really good quality tools hand tools that will last you two lifetimes, knowing that I can pass them onto my son. Also, there's nothing worse than a cheap screwdriver threading a screw or a hammer falling apart when you're trying to do round the house jobs.

        • +7

Wait till your son leaves them out in the rain absentmindedly when they are fixing their bike…

        • -1

The Metal is solid, but the rubber handle will rot before you pass them on.

    • +2

🤣🤣🤣 my bro just paid $92 for it because the deal from yesterday was about to end

  • +2

    Great deal thanks!

  • +2

Just FYI it's not 1000vde rated version, just if you require it

    • VDE one is $99, Opinions if its worth the extra?

      • If you're cutting live 1000v wires, I'd recommend the VDE.

        • +19

I highly recommend you don't cut any live voltage wires. The VDE are there as protection, not for intended use. Turn off the breaker if you are going to be cutting any wires.

          • +11

@sobriety22: Yep. I'm an electrical person (electrician and engineer) and reckon VDE is kind of nonsense. You shouldn't be working on any wiring that has been tested to be dead and locked out to ensure it stays that way. If you can't 100% guarantee that it's not live, you shouldn't be working on it. End of. We used to sometimes work live but that was stupid and it's no longer an option - and rightly so.

            Test
            Lock out
            Test again
            Work

            • @R4: What tool do you use to check if there is power?

Multimeter or a voltage tester pen?

            • +1

@R4: VDE is good sometimes you can’t test what you don’t see

              • +1

@MuddyClear: If you can't test, you don't work.

                Simple.

        • Lol its not at all for the live wire cutting. it's more to do with safety in general or are the standard ones actually really safe to begin with.
I don't want to have a regretful purchase and something go wrong because i cheapened on a product.

    • Do you know why this set is considerably more expensive than the 1000v set?

What makes them so different. Would of assumed the protection would be more expensive.

  • +2

    Got this last time

    • +2

Same, really happy with them, much better compared to cheap craps.

  • +2

Thanks OP. been watching this set for awhile and still thought they were too expensive at $90 eg you can get a good set of Kincrome for $69
    https://www.supercheapauto.com.au/p/kincrome-kincrome-plier-…
    But at $73 I bought

    • +1

      Great price for 300mm cobra.

    • Sprung version of the cutters for $1.51 more - https://www.amazon.com.au/Knipex-71-32-200-Leverage/dp/B005E…
      . <
Edit: Not only spring, but these are the "Notched" versions which are apparently far better. Many comments on the Project Farm video saying the Notched version will do a far better job - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ed8NB41lPIQ&

      • Unless I'm missing something (or the price has been jacked) your link leads to a $58 item that is $13 more and NOT on special???

        • You are missing something. I suspect you're comparing my link $58 "Knipex 71 32 200 Comfort Grip High Leverage CoBolt Cutter with Notch and Spring" to $45.80 Knipex 8701300B Cobra Uncarded Plier, 300 mm Length" instead of "Knipex 71 01 200 SB Cobolt Compact Bolt Cutters Black Atramentized Plastic Coated, 200 mm (Blister Packed)" which has now gone up to $64.

I was comparing apples to apples, two variations of Mini Bolt Cutters.

          • @snuke: The 71 12 200 CoBolt Compact Bolt Cutters, spring version without the notch are available next day on Amazon Aus for $49 if that interests anyone?

            https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B005EXO81K

I went with the notched version for $58 as linked above, cheers.

          • @snuke: Not wanting to be pedantic semantic but was using this line in your post-
"Sprung version of the cutters for $1.51 more - https://www.amazon.com.au/Knipex-71-32-200-Leverage/dp/B005E…"

Anyway, thanks for the research to aid members.

            • @havebeerbelywillsumo: Not sure what to tell you, but I linked an item that was $1.51 more than another CoBolt Cutters linked above me at the time of posting.
These prices change so much, that other pair was up to $64 when I replied yesterday, and now down to $52.43. The pair I linked to seems to have stayed steady at $58.73.

  • +7

    Thanks OP got one
Now need wires to cut around the house

  • +3

Good price. To bad I have 2 of them and only need the needle nose

  • +2

Nice deal - I paid $81 (which I thought was good) for mine back when the deals were on in Oct last year

  • +1

    Awesome

  • +1

    Thanks Op!

  • +3

I don't know if I ever got a chance to use it. but I bought 1, thanks.

  • +8

    Thanks OP, bought one.

For those looking for a Cobra instead of a nose pliers, this seems good. https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B005KH87IA/ref=emc_b_5_mob_i

    • +2

This looks like the better deal if you need the cobra over long nose pliers, the cobras are pricier than the needle nose

      • +1

The cobras are currently cheaper than the needle nose, making the needle nose kit the better deal.

Assuming you buy the cobra too…

    • That is awesome. Thanks!

    • Interestingly, the cobra kit weighs 600g whilst the nose pliers kit weighs 810g, I would have thought the cobras would be the same or heavier than the nose pliers

      • +1

There is some discrepancy - description says 950g.

    • Got this as I will use the cobra more than the long nose pliers for sure.

    • I'm actually not super confident there is actually stock of these.
It's been saying "1 left in stock" for me for ages and it gives me a very vague range for delivery date.

  • +1

We use these in telstra. Much goods

  • +8

I have plenty of pliers, including some nice Knipex models, so I don't need this.

    Still, I ordered one.

    • +4

It's a shame that as a species we only have 2 hands. Anyway, they'll look good in your toolbelt.

      • +2

        Damn right!

  • +1

So tempted, but I already have a set of cheepos that haven't broken yet.

  • +3

I'm massively into tools and this set is top notch, as good as you're going to get for that money.

I have all of these tools but if I didn't, I'd be all over this deal.

    • +1

I have all these tools, and still bought another set (the Cobra set, not the Assembly set).

Can never have too many mint condition Cobra's, even though the comfort grip sets are my favourite, these prices are too good to ignore…

I use my 180mm's most, but foranyone who needs a bigger set, the 250mm set of comfort grips at $42 is a bargain - www.amazon.com.au/Knipex-87-250-atramentized-multi-component…

      • +1

I agree - I probably have 6 Knipex and NWS pipe pliers!

I've got 4 Knipex tools recently bought on Amazon deals that I'm still waiting on delivery……

      • +1

Tossing up those 250mm comfort grips and the extra slim cobra

        https://www.amazon.com.au/Knipex-87-51-250-Pliers/dp/B000J2E…

Samish price, no comfort grips but the narrow jaws look very handy. Thoughts?

        • +1

I love the concept of the slimline cobra, but find myself using them less than all others.

It may just be mine, but i just find that the teeth don't line up and secure their grip as securely as my other German-precision cobras…

  • +1

Thanks op you made me just spend $600 after hearing prices are going up 1st of April 🤣

    • +1

after hearing prices are going up 1st of April

      April Fool's Day?

      • Lol that’ll be funny if true

  • +1

    Thanks OP. Got 1

  • +1

Was cut up the last time I missed these cheap, feel better now. Thanks.

    • +2

Get 2+ sets, so you're covered for future deals :)

  • +2

Can this cut bike brake/shifting cables?

    • and bike locks?

    • I doubt it would do a very good job. You need the right tool for that job.

  • +1

Thanks OP, have a few of their things, could always use more! Especially (only) when on sale!

  • +2

Don't forget 3.5% cashback with cashrewards on home improvement category people.

    • +1

I thought these might fall under -> Hardware Tools 0%

  • +1

I have too many pliers :/ And I have been told "No MOre" lol

  • For most people would the Cobra set be more useful than the long nose? E.g. simple plumbing stuff like installing a dishwasher needs wide mouth tools, which standard wrenches usually don't accommodate (I don't want to buy an extra plumbing wrench if I can get just this set)?

    • +1

      Probably.

Use case varies by user, but I get plenty of usage out of needle nose pliers, so would have preferred going without another pair of side-cutter plyers in place of the Cobra, but couldn't.

Either way, the cobra is undoubtedly the more costly/valuable tool, so I'd be grabbing it over the needle-nose plyers.

But be quick - there's only one of them left at https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B005KH87IA?psc=1&smid=A3P6X2GIM…

      • +1

        Thanks for pointing out qty!

I get plenty of usage out of needle nose pliers

        Such as?

Would multitools with pliers and cheaper long nose brands suffice?

        • Replacing cotter pins, accessing tight fit nuts and bolts, reworking wire and once - retrieving an errant earbud eartip after falling asleep with them in, waking up agitated due to the feeling of something burrowing into my brain and attempting to clear it out using a cotton tip, which only ended up entrenching the eartip deep within my earhole.

Was very proud of my efforts to combine a mirror, iphone and one set of needle-nose plyers to retrieve the eartip from what felt like a buried position five inches my brain…

          Thanks for asking!

  • +1

    Would these cut guitar strings?

    • +1

      yes

  • +1

Anyone read those 1-star German reviews? Most are saying it's fake and the photos show gaps when the pliers are closed.

    • +2

29x 1-star reviews making less than 1% of 2277 reviews resulting in an overall 88% 5-star rating. I think the majority wins.
If it is any consolation, I bought this late last year and it is real. If a fake one (or one that slips through QC) comes through, it is fulfilled by Amazon DE, so you can get a free return with Prime.

      • +1

I understand the numbers. The corner cases are of high interest to me because they are in German. I don't know much about tools but I know a bit about brand and possible placebo effect. High quality fakes are still fakes.

Does your set close completely or are there gaps? It costs a bit of time and effort to return stuff. I like to waste mine posting here instead of tripping to post office :D

  • Anyone had any luck recently getting Amazon to refund the difference when they change the price? It is almost worth sending this back for 18 bucks, but it is a total waste of Amazon's money if I do that.

    • yeh I've done this.
I used the 'receive a call from us' function
ie think you'll have better luck if speaking to a human.

it worked.. the guy had to 'check with his supervisor' and told me it would be a one-off.

  • +1

    Thanks OP! Bought a set.

  • Are you guys all electrician or what? How come everybody getting one?

    • +8

Definitely not. I thought long and hard. i bought the other set for $76 with the Cobra instead of the long nose. After Amazon GC it's low $20s per item:

      • When I changed carpets in a couple of rooms a few years ago and removed the old staples, the plastic grip came off my cheap general purpose pliers and it's rusted. So I need another one.
      • When I installed a dishwasher recently, I couldn't budge the 20sth old Asko inlet valve nut and it was too wide for my cheap wrench. A wide mouth plumbers wrench is low $10s to $20s at Bunnings, etc. I managed to borrow one, but I had to pause the installation for a few days. With its big adjustable width, there are many more uses for the Cobra; which I will think of in the next couple of days/months now I know of its existence.
      • The snips will come in handy cutting chicken wire, etc., which I've done to cover garden bed covers to keep rats out. I used what I had at hand last time - a cheap Fiskar garden tool, where the blade nut eventually broke. Will also let the kids use it to cut plastic/metal for craft.
      • If I need a long nose pair of pliers later on, I'll get an intermediate one from Bunnings,.Interestingly Bunnings sell NWS, the other German made pliers for a similar price for the 3 pack, but reviews are poor for the grip.

That's how I've justified it to myself anyway.

      • +4

F#&k, now I have to get one too…thanks for your long and informative explanation, now I’m justified to get one too. And if my missus ask, I’ll just read out your comments to her.

    • +1

      Buy first, find out later.

    • -3

Hive mentality. Same reason why the TV can tell grown adults to stand on dots for 2 years!

Don't tell anyone, but these are really subpar pliers by Knipex standards. These multi packs are always budget quality. They make nicer ones.

    • How come everybody getting one?

      Because they're pliers dude.

The most common house tools after screwdrivers and hammers, that have hundreds of uses besides doing electrical work.

  • +2

For any latecomers trying to place an order, the Amazon AU product page that's linked in the deal post is now showing the price as $148.00 (25% off) but if you click on the "New from $73.30" link on the left-hand side of the page (under the Add to Wish List button) you can still add the product to your cart from the Amazon Germany store for the discounted price of $73.30 with free shipping and then complete the checkout process.

    • Thanks A LOT for that advice, thought I'd missed out - my "wish list" was on the right directly under the add to cart/buy now frame with the $148 and under that again was mention of $73.30 prime link…delivery not till late April though if that matters

    • Thank You, I just did that.

    • "Usually dispatched within 1 to 2 months."

      • Just received post saying expected arrival date SIX April, like you, was preciously ages away!
