Still spewing I missed the studentbeans hack
What was that…
Recent reviews aren't that good.
I have 2 pairs, got them with the studentbeans hack a few months ago. They are ok, but lack some features that the more basic models or knockoff brands have such as skipping tracks, going back, volume control, etc. They are sometimes weird when pairing after you take them out of the case, where sometimes they don't connect to my phone and have to put them back into the case and take them out again. Wouldn't spend more than 50 on a pair.
They have volume control (slide finger up or down the right one), and you can program the left earbud double-tap to be a range of functions including skip.

Yeah, but you either have next track, or pervious track, you can't have both controls. Even with programming feature, you can't get all the features at the same time. Still better then nothing
I have the same issue as your problems with the bluetooth connection.
There are 2 reasons for this:
1. The in-ear sensor is terrible at its job. 0% chance of detecting my ears (so it thinks it is not in an ear and refuses to turn on). I had to turn the function off to get a working product.
2. The case is poorly designed such that the buds can only trigger the on/off function when it is at a particular angle inside the case - seating the buds does not automatically mean the buds are touching the charging contacts. This leads to frequent situations where a bud will fail to connect out of the case, then I would have to put the non-connecting bud(s) in the case, then flick the bud(s) until it shows a charging light, before taking it back out of the case to achieve a connection.
I picked up a pair with that deal as well. I really like them but also frequently run into the issues mentioned on this thread. It’s a shallower fit than most earbuds and is more comfortable. With the wings they are secure.
Given the issues they have which appear to be design faults, I would agree they’re overpriced and this price is probably the upper limit or above what I would consider paying for them. Without the faults, they would be worth while in my opinion.
I bought Soundcore A40 from Anker for $97 and I'm happy with the purchase.
