Do You Shampoo/ Wash Your (Scalp) Hair Daily?

Most people thought when people shower (daily) it follows they shampoo as well. Wrong! Some people don't shampoo/wash their scalp hair daily. Some every other day, some weekly, some (corn row braids/ dreadlocks) monthly.

It could be inflation, it could be for the lack/ thinning hair, it could be for the emo look, it could be for the environment, or something else.

So, what's your shampoo regime? I have short hair so I can afford to wash daily.

I shampoo everyday to get rid of the wax/hair product I apply in the morning.

  • Never shampoo my hair. You dont need it. This is how marketing works, selling stuff that you dont need for problems that dont exist.

  • I shave my head instead. Cheaper and then can just run the bar of soap over my head in the shower.

  • I shampoo roughly twice a week, and condition 3-4 times a week. I have shoulder length hair and cannot imagine how rough a state my hair would get if I shampooed every day. Cost isn't a factor, I don't shampoo every day as it is bad for the hair.

Maybe watch Johnny Harris segment on hair shampoo https://youtu.be/T-_HKFjxVl0 and decide.

I still wash it daily because of habit.

    • I've been "no poo" since I watched that video last year. It took some time but eventually my hair got used to it and the natural oils have balanced back to their normal state. Can definitely recommend giving it a go.

  • Really depends on your job. If you're out and about… then daily it would be. But if you're working from home then skipping a day won't hurt.

  • Shampoo between haircuts every 3 weeks or so. If I shampoo daily it gets really dry.

  • +1

I wash my hair daily, though only with water and vigorous scalp rubbing with my fingers. The only time I've used shampoo in the last ten years is when I got engine oil in my hair when working under the car. I use a wee bit of bicarbonate of soda every week or two to keep dandruff in check. I used to have really bad dandruff, but since changing it's practically disappeared and my hair and scalp is in great condition.

  • I get really bad dandruff if I do not use head & shoulders daily. If I skip a day of shampooing, it becomes snowy :(

    • +1

So I used to have this as well. You've created a dependancy on it. You'll probably have to slowly start spreading the time between washes to get your hair used to not relying so heavily on it.

I've moved to ~3 washes a week, and I don't really have dandruff anymore, but I have different dermatitis needs, so still need to wash regularly.

I use Sebizole to help with this though instead of head and shoulders.

      • Thanks mate, I will look into it and try and reduce shampooing.

When you say "wash regularly", do you mean you still wet your hair but still shampoo 3 times a week?

        • +2

Nope, the off days no wetting of the hair. Gotta give the scalp and hair the time to let it build up its oils and manage itself a bit.

  • +3

As I use hair product every day I just cannot stand having my head against the pillow at night not being clean. So wash it every night.

  • Many people here are chiming in about shampoo overuse, I'm probably guilty of that thanks to shorter hair (quick and easy to shampoo) but also oily hair… that I may very well be a big cause of — so I might try just conditioner. Or maybe even just water some days!

I wonder if some of us are guilty of soap / body wash overuse too?

Not for one moment advocating for the avoidance of cleaning ourselves — there is such a thing as basic personal hygiene! 😷Not to mention being kind to others' olfactory facilities.

    • +1

You'd still be cleaning yourself even if you're just using water. Make the change gradually and you may not even notice. When I changed I did it all at once. It took 2 or 3 weeks for things to get to a decent state, though it never got particularly bad during that time.

  • If you use product in your hair every day then this is obviously a factor for those washing daily.

  • +1

If I don't wash it daily, not even cyclone Tracy would move my hair.

  • Just washed mine for first timer over 2months

  • +1

I'm basically bald (No.3 shave) and I still shampoo every few days or I end up with a shiny head from scalp oil.

  • +1

As a long haired male (below shoulder length) working in manufacturing, I wash my hair twice a week. Ideally I want to wash it thrice weekly but cbf. I do give it a good wash with double conditioning and cold-pressed argan oil treatment when it's time.

  • +2

I've been shampooing daily since primary school, If I don't it gets really greasy/oily…. My hair is really thick as well…There's no one regime fits all, everyones hair is different depending on your ethnicity/genetics, do what works for you.

  • wow Ozbargain! just wow! You opened my eyes. now I know why I get oily hair and didn't know how to fix it, I thought washing daily was the solution until today. I will try washing with just water from now on thank you!

  • Bro, twice a day.

  • +1

No shampoo, only a scalp brush and water.

Previously when i had seborrheic dermatitis, i would use selsun gold a couple of times per week, as per instructions for treating that condition.

  • Im wondering why you had to clarify it was scalp?

Surely noone shampoos..well you know…the unwaxed areas?

  • For those who do minimal / no shampooing: do you not wash your hair after a sweaty workout? Or just a generally warm / humid day? Or eating something spicy, etc.?

I sweat easily, and my hair becomes oily with a definite smell. (Catch-22 because it's been conditioned to be oily thanks to the daily shampoo, right? 🤦🏻‍♂️)

To be frank it's not a dirty/unwashed smell, but it's certainly a "me" scent that I prefer to not have hanging around me.

    • +2

I find a lot of the time, just hot water does the job getting the oil out, without need for shampoo, and I have long, reasonably thick hair.

  • QC hair care

  • I use a generic conditioner on my beard every day in the shower but I definitely wouldn't shampoo my hair every day.

Pretty sure it's not recommended to shampoo every day.

  • I wash my hair daily, one day with QV wash another day with shampoo. Doing this for years, so far so good.

  • every time i remember to take a shower…i have a bad memory

  • +1

I have very thick hair and I still only wash weekly at the most. If my hair feels good after a week I still won't fully wash it. You guys are crazy for washing your hair every day…There is a reason why we produce oils.

Good chance people smell without realising it.

  • I wash my hair before getting my haircut, once a month.

Otherwise, I just ensure I give my hair a good and thorough rinse with water each day.

Never been too oily. Never been a problem.

  • +4

I have a friend who shampoos a few times a week. I've been able to smell his hair as he walks past. He can't smell it thanks to olfactory adaptation, so he had no idea people could smell him from a distance.

    • +2

Lucky him. I can smell the oil after 2 days :/

      • +1

I have a work colleague who has a really strong smell some days. It isn't BO, it smells more oily so I assume it's his hair. It's so bad sometimes that I simply avoid him. He has no idea he smells as he's adapted to it.

        • +3

I wonder if everyone who's adapted to no shampoo is also adapted to the smell

          • +1

@purplelady: They definitely would be. People are usually too polite to tell them about the smell so they just go about smelling a little off everywhere they go.

I'm quite sure it's down to genetics and/or diet though. Not everyone who doesn't shampoo will smell, just like how not everyone who sweats has BO. A lot of no-poo supporters seem to miss this point though!

            • @eug: I also think there might be a getting used to the look thing, as well as smell. There’s two people I work with who every time I see I think “why don’t you wash your hair?” Their hair looks permanently stuck to their head with grease. So either they never wash their hair on a work day or they don’t wash their hair.

  • Twice a day.

  • Shampoo twice a day for soft silky smooth oil free hair.

  • I don’t use it anymore.

Just rinse every time a shower once or twice a day.

I have a consistent number 2 cut with male pattern balding.

  • I shave my head every few weeks, so I just use body wash/shower gel to give my head a quick clean when I shower.

  • Stopped using shampoos around 10 years ago. Just water run through a showerhead filter. Always lukewarm to cool water. Shower about once a week.

    • you shower once a week thats so interesting

    • Once a week haha.

  • +1

Twice a month if i can remember. Short hair. It goes too soft and wavey if i do it more often

  • Does going swimming without a swim cap count as washing? I go swimming everyday for exercise and then take a quick shower but don't use any shampoo, just water.

  • +1

Many don’t shampoo daily, and you can tell by the disgusting oily appearance of their hair as well as the pungent odour that accompanies their presence.

But hey, who cares about that when people refuse to shower daily or wash their asses regularly lol

  • +1

Genetics play a huge factor in amount of hair oils and washing required.
Everybody is different, some people naturally don't have oily hair and go by fine with shampooing less often.
Some people have naturally oily hair and skin, therefore need to shampoo daily.
By all means try and shampoo once a week with oily hair, it will be absolutely disgusting.
The body doesn't automatically stop producing hair/skin oils just because you don't wash it for a week, it's an automatic production according to genetics and other factors.

  • Male, once a week is enough. Rinse with clean Water everyday though..

  • wash my hair everyday with water but shampoo on a need-to basis which averages about once every 2 weeks.
mostly do it if my hair is in contact with something like if i went swimming or i smell like ciggy smoke, or i was cooking and my hair smells like lard.

hair was pretty oily when i stopped shampoo daily but after 2 weeks, it was fine.

Thorough rinse every day, but have basically not used shampoo in 2 years. After a couple of gross weeks at the start, it normalised and maintains itself - doesn't get greasy or smell. My hairdresser is happy. In comparison, I used to shampoo every day, and I'd be starting to get grease by bedtime.

It doesn't work for everyone, I got lucky.

Also depends on your environment - I broke my streak a month or so during a visit to Bangladesh, where the air and water quality were so low that my hair couldn't maintain itself. Felt disgusting washing it with just water.

Swimming regularly also makes it very challenging.

I genuinely haven't put shampoo in my hair since Jan 2008 (about a year after I got married)!
I had been told that it took ~6 weeks for hair to settle without shampoo. For a host of reasons, I was without shampoo for 4-5 weeks in 2008 and it hadn't gone disgusting, so (with my wife's approval) I continued to test whether it would settle….
So now I wash/rinse with water every shower, but no products for 15 years! The results have been that no one has ever noticed, I've trained and played football pretty much the whole time without issue, dandruff actually went away and stopped being a problem, and had more money for eneloops not having to purchase shampoo.
Not suggesting its for everyone, and I certainly can't convince my daughters, but its been a great decision for me.

    • Not wanting to be rude, genuine question… how does your pillow look? Does it get dirty quickly?

      • +1

Nope, looks exactly the same as the wife's and gets changed at the same time.

  • every thee-four days with dry shampoo if I need it. I have thick and long enough hair that if I wash daily I would literally never have a dry head.

It can be greasy looking by day 3 (dry shampoo helps, but not by day 4). I'm looking to move to bars for environment reasons, but maybe I'll look at no-poo or conditioner only for a bit

  • Washed my hair daily and my baldy barber is so jealous of my thicc hair.

  • Don't use shampoo. It's not necessary.

  • somebody's gotta give a good home to the bacteria that thrive in the oil and dead skin cells on my scalp

  • +1

I gave shampoo away about 15 years ago. Now I wash my hair every day with water in the shower and give my scalp a good massage. It’s certainly the case that when you’re in your teens that you’ll have more imbalance and therefore more oil production etc but once you get into 30s and 40s, everything seems to stabilise.

  • No shampoo. Saving for the bargains.

  • I shampoo and condition my hair once a week, with more premium expensive stuff, good for dandruff and dry scalp, in between the week I also use a hair enrichment liquid (very small amount onto my scalp) after the shower which helps the scalp and my hair. I used to shampoo every other day and noticed heaps of dandruff and an itchy scalp as well. My head is in the best condition ever.

  • Hey All,

I can’t believe what I am reading and this is what I have been trying to change in all our clients.

I am a full time barber and also study products and health and usage.

While barbering I have seen all walks of life when it comes to hair. Especially men. We don’t have long enough hair to not SHAMPOO & CONDITION EVERY DAY. Most men just shampoo (BAD). Some men shampoo once or twice a week (VERY BAD).

Ladies only need to SHAMPOO AND CONDITION 2-3 times a week because they have long hair. They need the oils in their hair. Then they wash it out to reproduce. If you sweat ladies you should wash every second day and condition.

I CANT STRESS ENOUGH GUYS - IF YOU HAVE HAIR SHORTER THEM 15 CM LONG

    YOU NEED TO:

    1. SHAMPOO & CONDITION EVERY DAY (NOT JUST SHAMPOO)
    2. DO NOT JUST CONDITION
    3. USE THE SAME BRAND SHAMPOO & CONDITION (THEY ARE MADE WITH THE SAME INGREDIENTS
    4. REPEAT THE PROCESS THAT DAY OF YOU SWEAT OR EXERCISED OR SWIM.
    5. STAY AWAY FROM COLES AMD WOOLWORTHS PRODUCTS (THEY ARE CHEAP FOR A REASON) PARABEEN & SULPHATE
    6. IF YOU HAVE A BEARD INCLUDE THIS INTO YOUR EVERYDAY ALSO
    7. THE RULE IS YOU MUST SHAMPOO AND CONDITION EVERYDAY (EVEN IF YOU HAVE A SKIN CONDITION) THIS WASHES THE OILS AWAY TO NOT FEED THE CONDITION
    8. IF YOU HABE FINE HAIR USE A FORTIFYING SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER
    9. BE GENEROUS WITH THE SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER. More so conditioner. Leave in for 60 sec and wash out when rinsing body.
    10. DO NOT USE THE 2-1 on your hair (People will hate for this) there is not enough conditioning component in it.

I CHALLENGE ALL OUR CLIENTS WITH THIS TO COMPLETE IT FOR 4 WEEKS AMD COME BACK TO ME - AND THE RESULTS ARE ALWAYS THE SAME. 100% POSITIVE AND 120% COMPLETE IMPROVEMENT

THINK OF THE WASHING MACHINE AND DETERGENT AND SOFTENER.

SHAMPOO IS A DRY AGENT TO CLEAN - NO SOFTENING OR MOISTURE COMPONENT. SHAMPOO WILL CLEAN AND DRY YOUR SCALP

I HAVE HELPED SO MANY PEOPLE WITH THIS.

WHO WANTS TO TAKE IN THE 4 WEEK CHALLENGE AND GET BACK TO US HERE.

IN OUT STORES I HAVE GIVEN AWAY SO MANY FREE BOTTLES JUST TO ASSIT AUSTRALIAN MEN AMD SHOW THEM THE PATH.

    KISS METHOD

    LOTS OF LOVE

    • Chuckles, I would upvote this actually

  • Wash with soap shampoo. You only need to wash once a week. The hair doesn't get dirty/oily nor smelly. Takes at least a week to get used to it if you wash your hair daily.

  • Once a week works well for me.
