Expedia: 12% Cashback on Hotels (Was 6%) @ Cashrewards

180

Hi all,

Just looking for some hotels and found that Expedia are offering a higher than usual cash back on Hotels.

They have cash backs on other things like car rentals etc but the rates are very low.

Enjoy.

I try and bargain / book direct with the hotel. I work in the hospitality industry. Honestly Expedia and Booking.com are both foriegn "digital" platforms that pay no GST on the commission they charge the hotels. And they charge huge commission.
Expedia charge up to 15-25% commission to the hotel. They pay the funds to the hotel using overseas credit cards costing the hotel another 3% merchant fees. So they still make money on these promos and often encourage the hotel to offer the discounted promo rates themselves and offer to boost their position in search results if they do.
Consumers keep booking through them so hotels have no choice but to use them or sit half empty.
I rather the money stays with the business employing the staff and paying GST on sales.

    • Expedia shares their commission with the consumer through these cashback offers. Win win for the consumer.

      • Hotel prices are dynamic so you can bet you pay more than you would if we all book direct.

Realistically, if I call a hotel and ask for a 12% discount, 9.5 times out of 10 they will just laugh at me.

If anyone wants to go to all the trouble of booking direct and being laughed at, just to stop Booking and Expedia getting richer, then good on them. They are fighting the good fight but I think it is ultimately a losing battle.

      • Shop around then ask the hotel for their best price. It may vary with location and time but in my experience if you can't find a better deal than Expedia even with its "discounts" then you aren't trying very hard. Mytoyota has ongoing Expedia 10% off selected hotels which I tested for a recent Melb trip. Not even in the ballpark.

    • I always try book direct where possible but sometimes, they can't get the same price as these booking websites, especially if some sort of deal is running like cashback which stacks with the price.

  • Can someone please explain how this works? Do I need to have an Expedia account as well?

I've got the Cashback notifier thing at the top of the screen, but it's not displaying a "tick" like it normally does when I click through to the hotel I want to book?

Is that normal? Will it be tracked as long as I click through the link above?

      Yes.

      1) Log into Cash Rewards.

      2) Find Expedia and then click shop now. Making sure any blockers you may have are turned off.

      3) Navigate throughout Expedia per your needs and buy. The transaction SHOULD track.

If you want you can check the prices of your desired purchase before and after going through CW.

  • Shopback apparently offering 13.5% on hotels tomorrow.

    • +1

Shopback is offering 13.5% on Expedia hotels today, plus 10% bonus cashback (capped at $100) for Westpac.

  • Has anyone got these upsIzed Expedia cashback promos on desktop to track?

Despite following best tracking practices, I find that my orders do not track.

I always need to claim missing cashback, which can be denied.

I'm having issues with ShopBack upsized Expedia promotions with Westpac. Still waiting on it to be investigated.

It shows 14% for hotels as of now.

  • I have never once found cheaper prices booking direct than through third-party sites like Expedia/booking.com/Agoda.

  • shows as 14% for me.
clicked through and got the tracking, thanks op!

  • So "Cashrewards Day" is supposed to offering a boosted cashback rate on booking.com, according to their banner, from March 9-11.

It'a 6% right now… is that it lol

    • different store. still shows as 6% for me. better off through expedia.com but do your own due diligence.

  • is this stackable with the 10% off deal using mastercard?

    • You may not be eligible for Cashback:

If a gift card is purchased or used as payment.
If a coupon code is used that is not listed on Cashrewards.
If your order is not fully completed online or is later changed.

How about expedia credit? Should be fine? Thanks

        • +1

Yea i think so! However I just made a big hotel booking about 15 mins ago using some expedia credit and still haven't received the cashrewards email about the tracking…hmmm.

Not sure about Expedia but if you go through cashrewards with Agoda, the prices are always more expensive. Something to be aware of.

    • I agree, Agoda and Booking seem to change prices when going through cashback sites. But Expedia doesn't look like it changes.

  • Just compared prices for exact same dates at exact same hotel through Trivago. Expedia comes out 2x more expensive per night.

  • It was 14% before 6pm. I managed to book London hotel just in time, which tracked as well. Now back to 12%.
