Austrian Bergbaron Reserve Cheese 200g $3.50 ($17.50/kg, 50% off) @ Woolworths

170

Something for the cheese board cheaper/kg than the average supermarket tasty cheese.

Bergbaron Reserve - Creamy with Character. Alpine eye formation cheese from Austria with a smear ripened rind. It has a creamy, sweet flavour with a hint of sharpness and character from the traditional smear ripening process. Perfect for cheeseboards, sandwiches and melting.

I say it looks like Swiss Cheese 🧀 but there may be holes in my theory.

Good price! Austria's most popular cheese, atleast it was a decade ago. Normally retails for around $30 to $40kg

    • So it’s more like a Kraft type cheese over there, nothing special?

      • I doubt they sell crap like that over there. It's the real deal.

It's hard to compare as they aren't as they dont have the few major players as here, but it's good basic example of Austria's favourite style of cheese, that being the Alpine style.

Keep in mind, this is abnormally cheap due the European agricultural system, where they guarantee a set purchase price. So it's definitely a good deal. It wouldnt be realistic for an Australian producer to replicate this price using the same method of production.

  • Creamy, with character! Awesome will buy!

  • Is it meant to be a blue cheese

Ha! No… looks like that one has had air/moisture get in. The ones next to it look like the vac seal in intact and look fine.

  • This stuff looks gross.
