If currently in the market for a great value compact home stereo system with surprisingly clear sound and output, this attractive-looking (silver) Panasonic unit is available at a good price. Good for a living room or workshop and for people who have a prized CD collection.

Although it has been cheaper at times on Amazon, this Panasonic normally is offered around $198 at most retailers. Costco Bundamba and North Lakes (QLD) stock a similar model at $148 but in black only.

In addition to being a CD player with FM radio, it has USB connectivity as well as Bluetooth wireless technology (music data from a compatible device is sent to the main unit by wireless transmission eg from a smartphone or tablet). Note the unit does not transmit data/signal out via Bluetooth eg to Bluetooth speakers. It does not have a DAB+ radio tuner but is a great performer at this budget price point.

Put a tape deck in there and you got a deal!

    • +2

You forgot to add an MD recorder, also

      But… no DVD, no BlueRay?

      And no DAB?

Is it at least Bluetooth 3?

      • -2

        Specs say it is DAB+!

        Maybe a mistake?

But hold fire, they also say 'Bluetooth® Ver 2.1 + EDR'

So not as fast as BT3. A phone will run out of battery streaming to this thing in hours! When was it made, 2013?

All the reviews are >6 years old!
        https://www.panasonic.com/au/consumer/home-entertainment/hi-…

Some ancient nuggets are there if you dig, one even talks up its AM performance!

If any OzB deal deserves a Neg, it is this one! This thing is 6+ years old.

        • The specs do NOT state it has DAB +………. There are plenty of recent Amazon and Good Guys reviews eg https://www.amazon.com.au/Panasonic-SC-PM250GN-S-Bluetooth-W… and https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/panasonic-micro-hi-fi-system-…

          • @puglikesabargain: Love the Negs, thanks OP. Did you find out the manufacturing date?

BTW: You can easily return it given the manufacturer's advertising is incorrect/deceptive:

            https://www.panasonic.com/au/consumer/home-entertainment/hi-…

Click specs, and then all specs…

In the radio section, 'DAB Plus'

            • @resisting the urge: The specs have a "dash" beside DAB+ meaning it does not have it …pretty simple. Anyway, retailers like Good Guys clearly do not indicate DAB+ in their product descriptions. Very presumptious that you think I negged you (noting there are 'two' negs against your comment above)…… and who on earth cares about the product release date, ffs it is a CD player/stereo, they were invented in 1985ish, probably before you were born. Are you a disgrunted Panasonic employee with some point to prove? Do you carry on about Aldi sound products (Bauhn) at this low/budget price point as well? The comments are absolutely laughable. On a positive note, I hope my post helped someone on a budget wanting a good little stereo for their home…..

              • -1

@puglikesabargain: No the dash in the spec list means no presets, as DAB radios don't have them, they auto-tune to however many stations are available
And… many of the reviews talk about its poor AM radio, whilst only an FM is listed; AM is not- with our without a dash.

Love the reviews you linked to compliment the 8 years worth on the Panasonic site. TGG site goes back three years with multiple complaints about the sound, reception and display being weak. And surprise surprise, yet more advertising woes:
                - "Advertised as having a headphone jack. Bought it online and it didnt have one. I took it back weeks ago. I particularly needed a headphone jack in unit."
                - "Screen is very faint. Will need to keep the manual on hand. The remote is poor, very limited, can't nominate a track to jump to etc. The days of playing WMA files are gone as well. Other than that sound is reasonably good"
                - "AM Radio reception not very good, will only play MP3 recorded sticks earlier model played MP4 or MP3."
                - "Bought this a few years ago and the sound is ok, the bluetooth has stopped working and the display has faded a lot. it can receive radio well though"
                - "Bought as present for kids room. Can't connect standard headphones and Bluetooth only allows devices to be played through the speakers, not sound sent to Bluetooth headphones"

As much as not everyone seems unhappy with it, all my points stand:

                1. Clearly this is new old stock (NOS), yes… it is being dumped.
                2. Mutton dressed up as lamb: Whilst advertised as current, all of this is 'decade old' tech, and unfit for sale as a reasonably usable product in 2023:
                  • Incompatible with modern audio and video files on removable media
                  • BT2 EDR is next to useless with today's expectations of Bluetooth compatibility and features (esp. as BT5 has been a thing for years already).
                3. No DAB Plus as advertised by Panasonic
                4. No headphone jack as some have seen advertised
                • @resisting the urge: good grief, guess what? it plays CDs and USBs really well with really nice sound. It also has bluetooth to your phone…..yayyyyy !!!! It also comes with a 12 month warranty, double yayyyyy!!!! It has AM/FM radio……………Too much useless time on your hands……channel your energy into something remotely productive, "resist your urge" lollllll :) :)

                  • @puglikesabargain: The thing is 10 years old. At the end of the rabbit hole, that is the sad truth. Enjoy your purchase :-)

                    • @resisting the urge: I most certainly will…… $148 is chicken feed to me, but even if it was 30 years old, it does the job to play CDs in my entertainment/living area without needing all the crap bells and whistles! lolllll

                      • -1

@puglikesabargain: Nothing wrong with the unit, other than its extreme age.

And the fact that the vendor and manufacturer have disguised this means that anyone wanting to play CDs written using modern formats, BT to stream, or features like playing audio files via USB, etc. is up the creek. I guess if you never insert a CD created on a computer, or connect a battery powered BT device, it'd work out.

That said, there have been lots of these kind of systems embedded with outdated tech dumped like this by many of the established brands. Stock has aged in warehouses before CDs and BT were a thing. However there are modern systems have what you use and are more up to date, Aldi flogged a 'newer' one for $99 not long ago that was better in most aspects but barely a bargain given its features.

Dual tape deck with high speed dubbing.

This is literally landfill? just get a bluetooth speaker.

    • +1

I have some good Sony bluetooth speakers but they don't play a vast collection of CDs, and don't seem to pump out the sound this compact system does :)

    • +3

Not really for me is a deal bcs i've got over 600 original Valuable CD, and i don't want to throw it, even if i've got Tidal streaming

      • Wouldn’t you want something a bit higher quality than this to play them though?

        • yes definitely

        • you would be surprised at this unit's sound quality, if you haven't already heard it.

    • +3

Which bluetooth speaker has these features?

      CD player with FM radio

      • +1

I can see both sides of this argument, and I used to have a Panasonic stereo just like this 20 years ago (design is nearly exactly the same), so I feel nostalgic looking at it.

However, in answer to your question, I can literally talk to my Google Home Max and ask it to play any song in the world, or practically any radio station in the world, and the sound is definitely better than this little system.

        • +4

But a bluetooth speaker that can't play cds is not that useful to someone with a cd collection.

          • +3

@xoom: yes and not everyone wants play music (including CDs) from a PC especially in a living room……

          • +1

@xoom: I used to have hundreds of CDs. Pretty much ditched them except for about 10 left in the car. Can't see any point making space for CDs in the house anymore. The valuable/rare ones I copied to hard drive.

Plenty of stereos in hard rubbish or garage sales. I have a bunch of them thrown around parts of the workplace and at home in the garage / shed / outside. 3.5mm plug into aux or with a cheap bluetooth receiver if you're fancy.

I prefer them to (new) bluetooth speakers - being so cheap / free they are basically disposable items you don't really need to care about at all. Like the song? Crank it up. Blown amp or speakers? Meh, we'll get another one.

    • -1

Agreed. Bought a very similar micro Sony unit a few years ago and it was trash. Couldn't give it away.

  • costco sells this or something similar for the same price

    • yes they do but the Costco model is available in black only.

  • +3

    surprisingly clear sound and output

is actually true, and at low volumes too unlike many BT speakers in that price range. My mum has an earlier version of this (also with DAB+), and it's just "musical", especially with ABC Classic FM and pretty well most CDs. BT - it works, sounds like decent quality to me…

    • +1

Panasonic makes good audio. People have gotten used to loud bluetooth thumping bluetooth speakers with V-shaped audio, and have forgotten what clear audio should sound like.

Though I might also have suggested some Edifier bluetooth speakers instead, which are also very clear.

    • yep I love mine, basic but useful functionality but what can one reasonably expect at this low price-point given great sound and output particularly bass and at low volumes.

  • My biggest grip with this is there is NO Headphone out or AUX out. I would love to plug this into my HiFi

  • -2

We have a few of these where we work. They are so old. Swear they're older than 2018. They're not bad but I'm pretty sure we couldn't sell them used for $10. Hardly seems a bargain.
