New TV 85" for PlayStation 5 - 2023

Hi there, my TV of 7 years just blew up.

That's sad, but also a great excuse to buy something new. I am not familliar with any of the TV developments in the last 7 years though.

What I am looking for is something at least 85"
My budget is around 2000 - 3000 AUD
The tricky bit is though, I need a HDMI2.1 4K 120Hz TV in order to best use my existing Playstation 5.

I have looked at the Sony x85K. On paper it does a great job, but on the reddit forums, I read a lot about the "old chip" in it, which apparently downscales the horizontal lines at 4k 120Hz, leaving only 1080 horizontal ones (so blurry). The X90K is supposed to resolve that, but falls outside of my budget.

The Hisense U7H seems like a good option on paper, but apparently the warranty and quality are not great compared to Sony?

Have I missed a model? Or does anyone have the X85K with a PS5 and does it work amazing?

Sony 85" X90K is the answer really. Lots more dimming zones and better HDR will give you an overall great gaming experience.

It's 15% off with JB Hi-Fi perks right now till 8AM making it $3,140 before additional 5% gift card discounts so $2,983 which is within your budget.

Alternatively wait a bit as the current models are being replaced by the new series and will go on clearance offers. Bit of gamble with stock availability.

Although, what you really should be doing is compromising smaller size and getting an OLED for the ideal best gaming experience. An LED will never match that quality, especially as you increase size.

    • Thanks man, that makes sense.
I seem to have just missed a deal on this TV a few days back when it went for 2995 including shipping at Bing Lee.

I will walk into harvey norman and JB tomorrow and see if I can get some $$$ off. I usually manage to get something sorted out.

I was mainly wondering if there was something in Samsung or LG I missed, but they seem much more expensive for the same or better specs.

most games wont run at 4k 120hz anyway, once the games get up to 120hz the resolution usually drops to 1080p

  • I have the sony X90J in 75" and can formally tell you the quality is great. Need to do a few tweaks in the settings ( I searched for them online, but changed some to suit what I felt looked better ) to get the best results; I like how sony have made it when your changing a setting it can minimize to a small little button on the corner of the screen so you can see that changes without half the screen being covered by the menu interface.

  • Is 85" even that good for gaming? I'm not a gamer, but that seems too big. I would have thought you would be better off (for your budget) getting an LG OLED in say 65". Sit a bit closer.

Depends what you play. For competitive FPS, too big makes it just harder to aim quicker. But for general gaming, big screen would look like your playing a game at the cinema

      • Also depends how big your room is and how far back from the screen you can sit…

  • Family movie night would make the 85” far more enjoyable. Also, nicer to sit on the couch while gaming at 5 meters away.

Just bought the x90k 95” at Harvey Norman for 3180 including delivery after a whole negations circus. Done. Thanks for the advice guys!
