What’s the use case for one of these bad boys?

    • +3

Good for travel if you want an extra screen to go with your laptop. Small enough to fit in the backpack too.

  • How good would this be to just use in bed connected to a phone? (Save me having to charge the tablet/ maintain two devices)

    • +2

If you're a Samsung fellow, then this is ideal - https://nexdock.com/samsung-dex-laptop/
I bought one to take travelling a few years back. Still works a treat.
Edit, can also be used as a second screen, or bigger screen for Switch, or plug in a Raspberry PIe and use it as a regular lappy.

Hey honest opinion for $473 AUD shipped is it more worth to get a second hand Tab S7+ for $500-600 - if I were just to use it to watch videos.

What's the battery life of Nexdock + S22 base using this combo? I got around 3 hours SOT so would it be less than that? Or does the Nexdock also charge the phone?

        • +2

Tough one. Pros and cons to both, with the NexDock you don't have to setup/update/maintain an additional device, but you do have to connect to connect it up, which is a bit more stuff than just a tablet lying beside the bed. I don't find the NexDock to be inconvenient, but I'm not a heavy user.
It's probably more cumbersome than a tablet. It's basically like having a laptop, except with the benefit of it still being your phone.
Nice to have a keyboard too(great keyboard btw).

NexDock has a 6,800 mAh battery which you can tell to charge your phone, or not. I probably only did a handful of big stints away from power, and it was a while ago, but I think I could manage about 8 hours of NexDock connected to phone time before the battery was low (leaving the phone battery at 100%).
Standby battery on my dock is incredible. Just powered it on last week for the first time in 5 or 6 months and the battery was at 89%.

Not sure if that's helpful or not. Happy to answer any other questions.

If you are primarily consuming media, I'd go with a tablet.

If you have a few uses for the nexdock or similar, then I'd seriously consider that. I use my lapdock less often, but I don't think I could give up the class of device now. It's been useful as a second screen, with my steamdeck, setting up PCs and raspberry pus, media, etc.

      • Do these ship to AU or did you use a forwarder? I was looking at it a few weeks ago but noticed the “shipping country” field doesn’t list Australia…

        • Mine did, back in 09/2020. Found my old tracking no. Took 7 days direct from HK.

          • @ToastySteve: Looks like it's only shipping to North America and Europe now. Not only AU but all of Asia looks to have been removed.

            • @jaqoozi: Crazy! We're so much close to HK than America. Ahh well, sorry to lead you down an impossible pass then mate. All the best with whatever you end up purchasing.

You can also look at the Uperfect or eviciv on AliExpress. There are differences in battery and power output, iirc.

I primarily work from home but sometimes go into the office - one of these is a god-send to easily give myself more screen real-estate without having to mess around with the crappy office monitors that don't have cables and/or don't work half the time. And it's a tax write-off

    • +2

Trying to multitask on a single screen with a laptop is insane imo. Having a small portable monitor makes the world of difference and I'm travelling every week. Plus they work well on my desk where space is limited.

      • Agreed. I used my iPad as my secondary monitor with my Macbook. It makes everything so much easier

        • +1

You can use your TV if you can find it

      • @clear Can you share the brand you use?

        • +1

One of the original Zeuslap monitors I shared ages ago. Their prices have gone up so I don't share them these days.

          I have a Uperfect too.

    • I work from home 3 days a week. A laptop plus this portable monitor has been very handy for me.

Working off just the laptop screen is just so cumbersome and limiting.

Like Clear i too have only a small desk to work off from.
Having the portable screen with my laptop makes having multiple apps open simultaneously workable.

    • Lol so in your philosophy all decorative items are "useless gimmicks"? Does your room only consists of a mattress and grey concrete wall?

  • Thanks for all these portable monitor deals! - I'm still looking for a good deal on 15.6" 4K IPS that I missed back in Jan at $226 - any ideas?

    • I haven't seen anything yet. I did find 2.5K 16" for about US$137.

  • Can’t use the second code?

      • Add "Color: 13.3 OLED 4K touch" to the cart

The listing defaults to the non-touch variant.

  • +1

Given this is touch - does it have a visible digitiser layer???

Imo not worth buying any OLED touch panel due for this reason…

  • Can this do more than 60hz at lower resolutions?

    • No 60Hz max.

  • Is there a cheaper FHD variant

  • @clear Is the 16" 2.5K 144Hz a better buy?
    given the refresh rate ?

Have you ever come across portable monitors that have a battery and wireless?

and thank you for all the monitor deals!

    • This has the advantage of having a better OLED panel versus IPS and 4K resolution. The 144Hz refresh rate in the 16" 2.5K would be most useful for gaming more than anything.

In my opinion I'd go for the 16" due to the larger size of the panel and 2.5K, as I'm not a fan of 4K. However 16" is way less portable if I want to stuff it in my backpack.

If you don't care for touchscreen and the refresh rate this is a good buy

  • This is overkill for the use case, but does anyone know if you plugged a chromecast into one of these and cast a website (like home assistant dashboard), does it respond to touch inputs, or would it just display the page like casting to a tv?

Might be a good option to avoid battery bulge or power cycling of tablet for HA dashboard.

    • Just a screen for the Chromecast.

  • If ya need more screen real estate for your laptop, just get a larger UW monitor. Bugger lugging around screens. Easier fix.
