Looking for The ASUS GT-AX11000 ROG Router under $600

Looking for an ASUS AX11000 ROG Router
Need to replace the Netgear R7000 running ASUS firmware.

It's overkill for my internet conneciton (38/5), but lots and lots of connected devices and NAS… so decided I don't want hassle and rather get a proper router that will last a while (The R7000 has been rock solid)

But the specials have been very rare the last 2 months or so.
Amazon AU has it for 659. The best I can find right now is an eBay refurb for $585 after $60 discount.

Am I just not looking in the right places. Should I wait for the right sale (Ebay markups mostly makes this terrible price).

Thx!

  • Sorry I can't help you with your deal.

Never understood these expensive home routers. For that kind of money, you could purchase and setup a few pieces of Ubiquiti UniFi equipment which are commercial grade and surely have better performance. I mean, even just leaving the Access Point next to the router and not mounted. Plus you can add more equipment if you need. UniFi is super easy to setup too, or look at the Edge range if you want something a bit more technical and featured packed.

    Ubiquiti UniFi USG3 Router - $199.00
Ubiquiti UniFi 8 Port POE Switch - $189.00
Ubiquiti UniFi U6 Pro Access Point - $289.00
    Total $677.00 with no discounts

Yes stock of the USG3 is hard to come by but they do sell second hand on eBay often, or check out the different models or the Edge gear. Can save some money by not using a UniFi switch (ie. NetGear GS10 8 port POE switch $95.00) or even a lesser WiFi access point depending on your requirements and size of house.

Again - I apologies this doesn't really answer your question. I'm kind of just ranting at this point. If anyone can convince me these routers are worth the coin, I would appreciate it.

    • "Not worth the coin" but then lists a bunch of hardware that equates to the same price.

Sorry, I'm not seeing your argument here.

      • which are commercial grade and surely have better performance

Also, having them separate allows them to be upgraded independently. Chances are you already have an adequate router (and maybe poe, or at least a poe injector) so you wouldn't need to buy that. i.e in OP's example he already has a router that is probably fine - I'm guessing it's the wifi that is the bottleneck?

It also allows you to put your AP in a more convenient location than wherever your NBN outlet is (if you're prepared to lay some cat5e and ceiling mount etc)

That said, I'm also considering this option and trying to see the arguments for/against this option. I know the unifi pro doesn't have wifi6e / 6ghz.

        • I have the router in an optimal position (my house has CAT 6 throughout). If I decided to do the ASUS AIMesh I could wire backhaul, although the current netgear does 90% of the whole property and 100% of any wireless devices.

I may move the new device 1 or 2m which is not an issue. (I do use 3 of the switch ports on the WIFI router, and then 8 ports on another linked gigabit switch).

  • I went from ubiquity to Asus mainly due to crappy wifi with prioritised console gaming. The differencevis night and day. Ubiquity is a business focused product. Gaming and extreme wifi is asus wheelhouse. I could have spent time to tune network for each game or device but asus has already done the heavy lifting. Both solutions are awesome but have different strengths.

    • My kids are wired up with 3 gamings PCs to the Router and WIFI All as one)
So yes, the ease of use is important as well as the basic protection on kids (Wifi devices)

So in the end I got tired of reading so many reviews, and went with an Ax6000 (dual channel yes as yo say below)… but under $500 ($489 - best ever price ~$410)
Best ever AX11000 AU Price $530… and I don't want to spend any more time researching a $20 saving.

Thx for making me consider AX6000. and with the CPU I can add a wired AP further out or AI Mesh the R7000

I really enjoyed reading your post.
Before kids and an intense executive role, I loved to tinker, learn abd builtd. Nowadays, sometimes I reflect on my hourly rate and how much I will spend in hours to save $20 ;)

Anyways, I have less time and I wanted the kids management features with 10, 12 to 14.
