  • people will complain about the low resolution of 1366 x 768
although you will be able to play nearly all games on ultra graphics since the video
card is not being pushed too hard at that low res. also handy for outputting to a hdtv at 1080p for fast portable gaming.
i just bought the acer i5 with nvidia 640 for around $600. for me its not worth all the extra cash for an i7 and 660m. will any diehard gamers buy into this low res?

    • I would buy this if I needed a new laptop (which I nearly do)

I play all my games plugged in to a 1080 monitor, but I need to portability for other times.

This seems like it would tick both boxes…

(and what's not to love about lenovo)

    • Ooooh, which Acer is this? And does it have an ExpressCard slot?

      • ir was on COTD but it's still on @ Online Computer http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/75509

and no expresscard slot. expresscard is kinda dead now

        • Definitely need an express card slot (dead? hopefully you meant CardBus?). I use the one in my current laptop to connect an external PCI-express (desktop) graphics card (AMD HD7770) for gaming. AKA "DIY ViDock".

Otherwise I use it to connect a SAS card with 8x2tb HDDS, makes my gaming/LAN rig damn small :)

1366x768 resolution screen is the drawback i think…

    • I don't know why everyone is so infatuated with 1080p laptop screens, I've owned a Asus ROG computer 1080p screen for 2 years now and I wish I got a 720p one. The overheads required for the Laptop to play 1080p games in the higher spectrum of settings is not worth it.

I plug my Laptop now into a 720p monitor now and playing on Ultra settings + High physics is much more worth it than resolution. Plus your battery last so much longer.

      • For people actually using this outside of a full gaming unit. You can fit more excel on the screen, cad/photoshop is easier and W7 snap is alot less painful to use.

I plug my laptop in a 1440p monitor, it had a heart attack trying to run at full res.

        • Yes there are benefits for work outside of games, like photoshop. But a 720p screen is perfectly fine for excel, I use excel everyday for work on my 720 laptop, and I deal with excel sheets that are 8mb in size with over 9000 line entries, never once complained.

If you want extra real estate, you're better off getting a second monitor, which won't be too much of a problem because with gaming laptops you're chained to a desk anyway.

      • What's stopping you from gaming at 720p on a 1080p screen?

    • I agree, own a Lenovo L420 that runs 1366x786 on a 14" screen and i find that borderline bearable. Don't think it's nearly enough for a 15.6" screen but that's just my opinion.

  • nice find! the resolution can go jump.. for a 15" screen HD res aint that crash hot a req. A gaming laptop is a gaming laptop because its got decent graphics and can run most high spec games.. exactly what you want in a portable gaming rig. You want the desktop replacement.. buy a HD big screen.

  • is it easy to change the screen? if this laptop was 1080p screen and rog asus it would cost $2000+
this price is a dream for australians

  • I regret opening an account with B&H :P

  • Wow definitely would get one if I had the cash but all these damned mid year sales drained me, Great find!

  • If you're going to go to the trouble of importing a laptop, you may as well get a better one.

    • So what better option is there that keeps it under the duty/GST threshold?

    • what do you mean about "the trouble of importing a laptop", from the comment below, I thought that it should be ok if less than $1000

  • +5

Be mindful anything over $1000 imported will certainly get slapped with custom duty/gst fees.

    • I've always wondered how exactly customs goes about collecting these fees…
Do they simply withhold the package until you pay a fee? And are the fees just plain 10% GST or more?

      • +1

You pay gst plus $40+ for the customs clearance process. Depends who they ship with. And yeah they don't release the goods until customs and duty is paid. Most of the paperwork lodged electronically and you pay for it before the item even lands in Australia. You would typically pay via credit card over the phone with the local courier company. Has been my experience with dhl and fed ex for my business stuff.

      • DHL will hold the item in their warehouse until you come down and pay the GST+Fee.

  • great deal with a GTX660

don't forget the 1080p version has bluray drive

    • Which will attract customs duty as it is >$1000

And the screen kills this deal. I don't know how anyone can tolerate these low res screens except on a <$500 laptop. You can see the pixels and lines on the screen.

You can lower the resolution to play games on a 1080p screen.

      • +1

Lowering the screen resolution on anything but 1080 on a 1080 screen will look worse, much worse than a 720 screen running native 720, especially on games. And no on a 15" screen you won't see pixels, my work computer is 15" with 720 and I don't see any of that stuff.

    it has a Backlit keyboard
    can anyone confirm

also im going to sell my acer i5 640m i just got 2 days ago :(

  • Can I ask what people do regarding power-adapters? As these are from the US with a US plug & power brick, if my memory serves correctly the US runs on 110v from mains not the 230-240 we have here, does this mean you need a different power brick and can't just change the plug on them?

    • I think almost all laptops are 110-240v so that you can use it when travelling. Just need the plug adaptor.

  • From what I can find on warranty generally it seems the Lenovo warranty is country specific. Bummer.

  • Not a bad deal, but not as good as this old one:
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/59742

    • that was a great deal at the time but look around for prices of laptops with 3rd gen i7 and 660m you will find they are very very expensive. this laptop will last for years of playing the latest games at full details the laptop you showed had only a lower end mid range gpu (i have a 6770m and its not good enough)
