140

mod - REMINDER

  1. Check the actual plan being offered against what you are currently getting
  2. Remember to use the latest increased prices when doing the sums for your existing bill

added to title that this is for TruEnergy

www.onebigswitch.com.au are offering 16%ish discount
if you switch through them to TruEnergy.

And you can switch for no exit fee costs from Energy Australia. :)

Thought some others out there might be in a similar position.

Hope this helps some people out…
$250+/year savings for me… Enough for another Nexus 7. :)

Update:
[What if I’m an EnergyAustralia customer and want to sign up to the TRUenergy offer, will I still have to pay exit fees for changing contracts?]

You will not have to pay exit fees if you are transferring from EnergyAustralia to TRUenergy. If you find an exit fee on your bill please contact EnergyAustralia to have your exit fee waived.

  • I should have also mentioned there are discounts for all states!
I only checked out NSW for obvious selfish reasons.

  • If you're on EnergyAustralia, there is no exit fee to "switch" to TruEnergy.

We need to compare the rates too, not just the discount rate.

    • Yes, fully agree. Any website that directly compared their rates without entering too much details?

    • +2

My time of use meter rates with AGL NSW as compared to OBS TRU (before discount, excluding GST, new AGL rates applicable from 24th July 2012, TRU rates from OBS website):

      1) AGL
      2) TRU

      Supply charge:
      1) 59c/day
      2) $73/quarter or 80c/day

      Peak:
      1) 40.6c/day
      2) 45.8c/day

      Shoulder:
      1) 16.4c/day
      2) 21c/day

      Off peak:
      1) 9.6c/day
      2) 13.1c/day

AGL gas rates are cheaper too across the gas usage threshold ranges.

  • Dodo have raised the pay on time discount to 15%… but only omn energy used not service rate..

A 16% discount was (is?) available from Origin Energy too.

Worth watching the video from the ABC's Mediawatch (at the top of the following webpage) regarding onebigswitch:
    http://www.abc.net.au/mediawatch/transcripts/s3546947.htm

Certainly a good warning to compare rates before committing to this.

    • Correct, be VERY careful with the first X kWh. Only take up deals if you are aware of the savings and are sure that they will save you money.

  • On the website that compares electricity companies AGL was the best, they have $175 credit, plus ten percent discount. The problem with AGL is the customer service is not as good as Energy Australia, they may also have invoicing issues. AGL also doesmuch lower off peak compared to what EA quoted me.

  • What would happen if my provider is AGL? Can I still switch with no exit fee?

    • Depends on your contract with AGL.

Energy Australia is owned by TruEnergy.
So that is a special case.

      • Truenergy bought Energy Australia and is merging…so Truenergy will be renamed shortly

  • OBS has now made over 13 million dollars in commissions as they state at least $60 per switch.

  • Isn't Tru Energy the parent of Energy Australia? Any contract to lock into?

    • Yes. Energy Australia owned by TruEnergy.
      Contract is 2 years.

      • -1

what is the difference if they are owned by the same company?

why do they need to compete with themselves?

        • -1

Not really competing. Tru bought EA. Thus, Tru has their rates as they're the main business, and EA have their old rates. You're just switching across to the main company.

Tru may well bring EA under its umbrella in future, but it takes a long time to integrate all the systems perfectly.

      • I meant 3 years. :)

  • does this come with the gas discount?

can it beat agl which combines electricity and gas? and gives 10% discount for gas and electricity…

  • There is also another option to fix/lock your current rate for 2 years under contract, with Energy Australia

(Not sure if that's a good option but "Electricity prices in Sydney have increased by over 50% in the last 3 years*"…)

Rate Fix is a simple new plan that allows you to lock in your electricity rate for two years at today’s NSW government regulated tariff rate

  • I am with Energy Australia and I rang them to see if they could match the Tru Energy offer. The best they could do was 12% off electricity only, NOT service charge too. However service charge and off peak 1 and 2 were cheaper than Tru Energy.

Tru energy still works out cheaper, but by a small margin.

  • FIT only 20cents for NSW. Would be good if they pay 28cents like AGL.

  • Just so you guys know:

  • I was almost going to hit the switch button. Lucky me do a Google search at last second, found this page…….look like that 14% extra "pay on time discount" is very hard to get.
    http://www.productreview.com.au/p/truenergy/3.html
After read all the comments. I decided rather stay with Energy Australia than go through that hassle.

BTW: Nothing against "Onebigswitch.com.au". Just not sure about the TruEnergy.

    • You won't have a choice in 3 months, the two are merging

I'm on OBS - check out the comments on this "deal"

    http://onebigswitch.uservoice.com/forums/124107-suggest-vote…

When I compared this with my current rates on EA - the rates that TRU charges are higher than what I get through EA with no contract or discount. You MAY get a ~%16 discount (and that's a big may), but it's on rates that are higher that what I am paying on a normal, no contract or commitment regular bill.

Look VERY closely at this offer vs what you currently get before signing up

OBS gets $60 for every sign up as well

    • Are you reading the new rates as per July or looking at a bill? Carbon price caused a big increase…only company holding back is AGL, to trick their customers into thinking they're cheaper but they are bumping their prices up next week.

  • Was in a cave. How often are these price hikes imposed in a year?

    • Was using string - guess how long it is.

I reckon you could allow that like everythingm prices will increase every year. The Network charges (government regulated component of the costs) certainly will.

      • Thanks mate. All these different offers do make my math skill better:)

  • Hmm … before discount it looks like the prices for OBS and Origin are similar, for my area

    https://www.onebigswitch.com.au/campaigns/44/plans?utf8=%E2%9C%93&plan_query[for_business]=0&plan_query[postcode_suburb]=3151%2C+BURWOOD+EAST&plan_query[plan_type_id]=2&plan_query[solar_panels]=0

    http://www.originenergy.com.au/priceguide/?_qf_p2_display=tr…

If OBS is talking 16% off the entire bill, versus Origin giving 8-9% on usage only (works out around 4-5% for my bill) … OBS sounds a lot better.

But from the above links, it sounds like people are unhappy with Tru energy.

Also, from the above links, if the bill is delivered months late, and most of this discount is for a pay on time … does that mean contractually, they don't have to give most of the discount? :S

  • I called tru about this deal. They advised me that I would not benefit because I have a solar install and don't pay a bill. Tru only give a discount if you get a bill, even if you use energy from the grid. You also get locked in for 3 years.
This deal is riddled with caveats. The. Real winner is OBS, who has made a ton of money.

queenslanders.. here is your comparator: http://www.qca.org.au/comparator/

    • having just used it now.. it's not so good.. but you do get an overview of who the qld players are, and their product names. you'll probably still have to call and haggle.

My contract with EA will be expired in 3 days. Here is my comparison of AGL vs. TRU considering my current quarterly usage of 1900kw.

I couldn't find the latest AGL rate so I assumed both companies have the same rate for ONLY PEAK PLAN (GST exclusive)

    24.4cX1750=$427 ; 33.0cX150=$51 ; service/quarter=59 ==>
    3 years usage = $5736 ; 3 years service=$708;

    AGL:::::: 3 years contract

10% discount of usage + $175 credit + 10,000 flybuys point (=$50) + 1 flybuys point for each dollar you pay the bills. +++>

    usage discount = $574
    one off credit = $175
    10,000 flybuys = $50
    3 year flybuys = $30
    ———————————————>total discount=$829

    TRU:::::: 3 years contract

16.5% discount for usage + supply charge

    usage+supply discount = $1063
    ———————————————>total discount=$1063

    CONCLUSION=I will choose TRU.

    Any comments?

  • 3 year contacts are generally not good for the consumer. Try to find 1-year contracts. Some companies try to suck you in the first year, then you;re stuck when they raise rates unreasonably later on. You're stuck as they slug you with an exit fee.

A general rule of thumb - For 3 year contracts: are they about 3 times better than 1-year contracts? Not really.

But, it's generally better for the energy company as they don;t need to fight for your business again. Why not come back to market again next year to grab a better offer?

The electricity market gets more and more competitive year after year.

And will you stay in your home for the full 3 years? There's a disconnection fee with moving sometimes. Stick to 1-year contracts if you're a savvy consumer.

  • Origin offered me a 17% discount on electricity and 12% on gas on a 1 year contract

    • what's the rate/charges you'll be paying after discount?

  • im gonna have to call them back and ask I have a 10 day cooling off period plusyou need to give them at least 20 days notice, so if your like me and your next bill from agl and energy aust is due in 18 days I need to wait till the next bill is due they can't change mid way through
