Thanks for these specs, I'm currently trying to learn about the technology of M.2 drives, but so far I'm a little overwhelmed with the different details I see on so many different drives. I want to eventually get a drive that has good specs but also good longevity/reliability. Is this drive offering both these things and what are the main specs to compare in this regard to other drives?

      • +3

any of these big name brand gen 4 drives with good dram will be great

        • Thankyou, what do you mean by good dram? I heard this is important but I don't understand why.

          • +3

@wonderboy4: This video from LTT explains it fairly well

            • @Emphasise: Thankyou @Emphasise that was an informative video šŸ‘ But it does seem that wether or not a drive uses DRAM is not always listed on the websites tgat sell them.

              • +1

@wonderboy4: I refer to this guide, namely the spreadsheet that they have posted. I feel the same as well, I never know what SSD has what hahah

                • +1

@Emphasise: Thankyou for the link, I really appreciate all your help! šŸ˜ƒ

Haha, yeah they don't make it easy! But the list will surely help a lot šŸ‘

I think it might be the cheapest it's ever been

  • Awww, should have waited :(
Will amazon price match if I previously purchased at $250?

    • Doubtful, I tried via chat a few weeks ago and just got told to return and reorder if the item isn't opened yet. Tried multiple chat agents with no luck

      • +1

If I order second drive, will I have to return the first order that's about to arrive from US?
Edit: Nevermind, I thought this was a SN850x.

        • If you bought an SN850X for $250, that is an amazing price!

        • Wow did you get a 2TB or 1TB for $250 for the SN850X?!
          PLE have both for:
          2TB = $419
          1TB = $234

          • @Deviner: Got a 2TB model for $252 from this deal. Cheaper with the 5% off for 2 items with a $8 book.

    • No, that's not something they offer.

    • No. You have to rebuy it and return the old one

Do you need a heatsink for these ssds if they're going into a ps5?

  • +1

What's the cheapest/best value M2 SSD with dram these days? I feel like upgrading the os drive. 2tb ofc

    • +5

I'm not certain it's the absolute best value our there, but the P5 Plus was only a little more with DRAM and PCIe 4.0 for $217.

      • Dang missed it :(

      • +1

This one has better random read and longer write performance before it gives up compared to the P5 Plus.

  • Will these work with Steam deck?

    • +4

No, you need 2230 size. This is 2280.

      • +3

I made a joke once that you could just cut it to size.

And apparently it was true on certain sticks.

  • +1

I heard theses are able to be used in a ps5 even though it's below the recommended specs.

    Has anyone tried here?

    • +1

yes, it's a great ps5 drive even slightly below spec because this drive runs much colder than other drives even without a heatsink

I run the 1tb version on my ps5 with a generic heatsink

      • Mind to share what heatsink to buy?

It looks like 5500 MB/s or faster is recommended for PS5 unsure about this WD model

        maybe 5150MB/s only.

  • +1

P5 and 850 are faster, P5 has matched this price.

    Hold

  • +2

p5 plus was available earlier on for $215 - i'd go with taht

  • +3

Looks like the Easter sales will be an SSD-galore.

  • +4

    HODL

  • This or a 980 Pro Samsung?
Plan to use as second drive..running 970 Evo plus for main and have pcie 4 on mobo.

    • +1

If it helps I have a 990 Pro 2Tb and an SN770 2Tb as my second/third drive (980 Pro 1Tb as boot). Both are just used for games and I cannot tell the speed difference between either of them. I'm mostly reading from them but during downloads or copying from one to the other I honestly wouldn't know which was which.

I'd go with whatever was cheapest if you are not needing to do a bunch of heavy duty writes all the time.

  • Will it fit lenovo s540 13ā€™ā€™?

  • Yeah it's the cheapest. The last low was $204.05 if you bought it with that weird little book.

  • Rip bought it when 240$

  • Donā€™t need it but everyoneā€™s saying itā€™s the cheapest itā€™s been so I bought one. Thanks!

  • I want to have more space on my PC and I'm wondering which of this two is better? https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/hard-drives-&-ssds/solid-state-drives-(ssd)/91516-ct2000p5pssd8?gclid=CjwKCAiAxvGfBhB-EiwAMPakqiV1uKryT2btZff-Z7Zlr5XJBeYwBcwcoyKKhC6oWCmKZrtSLSAxqhoCaK4QAvD_BwE (I have this one in my pc) but I would like to have more space so I don't now of buying the one on the promo or the one that I have. Thanks if anyone knows!

Thanks OP! I'm in the process of building a new PC. Perfect timing! :)

    Fair warning:

Iā€™ve bought 980 Pro on Amazon US. It had a fault (heaps of bad sectors after a few weeks) and because itā€™s US you canā€™t get a repair/replacement with Amazon AU or even Samsung AU.

I had to mail the drive to United States to their RMA centre, and they kindly sent back a replacement unit, but I had to cover cost of the couriers. It was a pain because I had to create a USA account with USPS or FedEx, otherwise it wouldnā€™t let me pay and generate a shipping number required by Samsung Service for return trip (used combination of VPNs, bogus addresses and weird credit cards). The whole back and forth with emails, registration, diagnostics and logistics took me like 8 weeks, and Iā€™m in the loss because of shipping costs.

    • Is this real?

Sorry to hear the things you have gone through but usually Amazon US are good on their own RMA. I've bought some electronics from them and never had issue on returning on fault..

      • Yes, but only within first year in AU, and undetermined ā€œreturn periodā€ in USA. When I tried through Amazon, they just referred me to Samsung.
After that youā€™re on your own šŸ˜‘ in my case Iā€™m relying on Samsung SSD 5 year manufacturerā€™s warranty.

  • Is 1TB $109 a good price too?

  • Is it worth getting Samsung 980 pro for ps5?

    • +1

      SN850X

  • Is this in every way better than SN570? Price difference is minimal

    • +1

Yes, the 570 is their lower tier product.

Older interface & far lower transfer speed, much lower endurance.

  • How can a WD Black not have DRAM cache?

    • What till they start the HDD like rainbow colours again then life would be much better.
