Best Mobile Plan - Need Some Advice

Hello all, first time asking for advice so please be kind.

I have not done an MS Paint diagram for this one :P

I have just found out my contract is not being continued. Aside from how gut wrenching this is, one of the logistical problems I need to solve is what to do with a mobile plan.

I have my number, and I will have a physical phone.

Need to have a good data plan but also would like to have the option to use internationally (text/calls/data) if possible.

If not, know I can get a temporary SIM overseas as I have done before.

Any additional words of support or advice for someone who has worked for 28 years and this is the first time they have been made redundant also appreciated - finding it very tough.

Thanks in advance

  • How much data do you need?

    • Kogan at $120 per year.

What's your preference about "best"? Cheapest or just something with a lot of data regardless of the price?

I personally find that there is very little options for plans with overseas roaming included these days. You would normally have to buy data pack at $5-10/per day or $20 for X number of days.

If you want unlimited data, you can try Felix Mobile. They are at around $35/month.

If you want the cheapest way to get a lot of data without spending much, moving between providers through the prepaid starter-kits has been working for some of my friends. They will get boost mobile / amaysim / whichever providers that have occasionally big cashback promotions (cashrewards, shopback, etc) and pay very little money for their plans.
Alternatively, you can also rely on woolies/coles to get similar prepaid pack that are always on sale every week. Some of my friends move between telstra -> optus -> vodafone -> belong -> lebara -> boost -> telstra to bring down their monthly cost to approx $10 while retaining something like 30-60GB data allowance monthly.

Although it needs some planning as not all providers have international roaming (I think belong is one of them that don't). Optus kind of has the better offering, at $20 for 10GB of data for two weeks across a number of countries.

Hope the above helps. And good luck at finding a new job :)

Go pre paid. Why sign up to a plan if you don't need a phone?

I buy a yearly Boost pre paid, comes with limited international texts and calls. I use WhatsApp anyway so it's not an issue.

Sorry to hear about the redundancy. Look at the bright side, you probably got a pay out and the job market has never been better. You may realise in a year's time that it was the best thing that could have happened.

    1) Stay positive

    2) Use outreach if supplied by your former employer.

    3) Getting made redundant is almost always not a performance thing and prospective employers know this.

    4) It's a bloody good job market to be dropped into, chances are you'll be showered with offers if you are a good performer. The plus side could be a better job with better pay and starting before your redundancy payout is consumed.

    5) Your new job is to update your resume and your LinkedIn and get applying for positions. Also reach out to former colleagues for any options they might have available at their workplace.

Thank you, all great suggestions and most already in progress - just feels horrendous right now.
