Improve This Build Please

Hey guys and girls,

I am thinking to replace my 12-year old desktop PC (yes, I know it's that old) since recently it had few troubles turning on and making funny noise when it tried to turn on (it's been ok afterwards weirdly).

Anyway, I have not been watching closely on the development of PC tech, so below build is based on my google-fu skills.
Initially, thinking of budget of $2k max but seems going over. I don't mind splashing bit more if it gives noticeable difference and/or better future-proofing.
Not a gamer at the moment, but if I get this kind of build, I may go back to occasional gaming :)

Please give me some suggestions on what to improve / swap components / reduce costs for similar performance.
Also, should I source the components individually from different stores based on the cheapest price, or there is a better way to procure the components?

Here it is:

Not sure about this warning though.. do I need to be concerned?
Note: The Deepcool AK620 68.99 CFM CPU Cooler may require a separately available mounting adapter to fit the MSI PRO Z690-A WIFI DDR4 ATX LGA1700 Motherboard.

Note: I noticed this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/758888 but OOS now. Seems better than my custom build above?

Thanks!

  • Ditch the HDD and swap it for a 2TB SSD. And get a bigger and faster SSD for your C drive, because a lot of apps want to be installed on your C drive and will prefer to use disk cache/scratch disk on your C drive.

    • So you mean replace the HDD with a 2TB SSD (Non NMVE) and keep the 1TB NMVE I have there?

Or, do you mean just get 2TB NVME SSD and that's it?
Can I partition SSD like HDD? E.g. 1 partition for windows, another partition for data

      • Yes

      • +1

You can get just the 2TB SSD now and get another SSD later if you need more storage. No need to partition it, just make folders for storage. HDD is only worth considering if you need a huge amount of storage.

  • Sure, yours is easily beat: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/758672

    • Do you mean my build easily beats that BPC build, or my build is easily beaten by the BPC build?

      • The BPC build runs circles around yours by a long margin (70%+ faster GPU) and is cheaper …

        3060Ti vs 7900XT:

        • Thanks. I honestly never consider AMD cpu and gpu.
Do they have downsides vs intel cpu/nvidia gpu setup? E.g. drivers, compatibility etc?

          • @OzFrugie: Nope, just cheaper and faster at the moment …

AMD GPU in general is weaker Ray Tracing, but 7900XT has far better Ray Tracing than the 3060Ti!
AMD GPU has no DLSS, but with 7900XT you won't need DLSS at any Resolution! But AMD has similar technology called FSR!
AMD CPUs generally run cooler, faster and less power draw than Intel in gaming, Intel 13th Gen better at productivity task.

            • @7ekn00: Did AMD fix the high idle power draw with the 7000 series? Heard it was insane like 100W.
That would be a deal breaker if I was in the market to buy a high end GPU

That's a lot of money if your needs were met by a 12 year old PC.

    • +1

Yeah i know but I plan to keep it for long time and now want to start (occasional) gaming again.
      Ideally 1440p gaming

  • You’ll need to flash that mobo to be able to use that cpu.
    Also don’t get an 8gb 3060

    • Is it easy to update the bios to support the cpu (13th gen intel) ?
Do I need to install a supported cpu first so that I can turn on the computer to update the bios?

My build uses 3060ti, not 3060. I believe 3060ti only comes in 8GB?

      • +1

You’ll want more vram than 8GB so I’d be looking at a different card.

If the mobo has bios flashback you’ll be able to do it without a cpu but you’d have to look into it

For starters select a CPU that comes with a fan. You're not overclocking and have no need for a fancy CPU fan.

  • CPU

    nothing wrong with 13600k

    CPU Cooler

You'll need to check mounting compatibility with store as it is based on the age of their stock.

    Motherboard

Decent choice in terms of being the cheapest , most feature rich , entry level overclocking mobo.. Though You could've go cheaper, depends on if you do OC or not.

13600k will almost always hit 5.6Ghz+ even with the worst bins according to some overclockers, so from the stock 5.1Ghz to 5.6Ghz is a nice 15% gain. If you don't OC though a B660/B760 would be just fine.

    Memory

3200 memory is considered slow for enthusiastic gamers. Considering you got a OC-able mobo, but almost rubbish ram, I don't know what to say. In most scenario you'd be better off with B760+3600c16 Memory than z690 with 3200.

    Storage

Seagate Barracuda is SMR drive (read: shitty) not worth considering.

    Storage

SSD's good, though you might want to consider just getting a 1~2TB M.2 and forget about either drive you listed. maybe a SN570 2TB?

    Video Card

    No complaint here.

    Case

Nothing in your build have a bit heat consumption, you can just a cheaper $80 ish case with mesh and it'll be just fine.

    Power Supply

Bit Over Kill to get a RM750, but 10 years warranty ftw.

    Operating System

OEM Win11 will come with a disc, not a USB, price difference vs retail should be quite small, if you want to go full legit you better off getting the retail copy.
OEM Licensing stuck with the computer you install to, retail allows for transfer.
