Here's something I just found out returning a purchase at Big W I paid with Big W gift cards: the refund came as Wish gcs, which can be used at Woolworths, BWS, Dan Murphy's, some Ampol stations as well as Big W, of course. So that's a way to swap, if need be.

No. I got the cabana from Bunnings. Still haven't tried! And summer is almost over!! (Pretty sure we'll see cabanas at half price pretty soon 🙄)
The real prize was the journey - Mainly the drive to Bunnings and the hours of research on price haha

It sounds like you got lucky. If BIG W staff are processing refunds onto a gift card and you do not have a gift card on you, I suspect they are merely processing refunds onto whatever gift card is at the service desk.
The only two occasions I've had the funds from a BIG W refund transaction processed onto a gift card, they were onto Returns gift cards (which are only redeemable at BIG W and Woolworths). I will note that for my second occasion, the staff member did originally ask whether I had a gift card on me first, so I guess if the staff member was not too observant, I could have presented a WISH gift card and have the refund processed onto that…
One last point: the only type of Ampol service stations accepting WISH (and Essentials) gift cards are EG Ampol service stations.
I had a Big W eGift Card stuff up when trying to use it online, got it refunded as a WW Wish Card, so it may be store specific as to whether they refund it on a Big W Gift Card or WW Wish Card.
Always Wish eGC. I purposely do it sometimes to convert $EDR to Wish eGC.
All online refunds for gift cards and EDR points are emailed as wish cards within hours of the return.
