  • $899 lol

  • @ian1095 Your post does not link to the deal, just an image lol. I think u put them in related stores?

    • Oh I tried uploading the image and it overrode the link. Updated now!

      • Can confirm. How are you finding the jacket? Too warm for all but snow or more of an outer layer?

  • Any advice re sizing.

    • I'm 170cm, 65kg, small fits me fine.

  • I am going on an Antarctica cruise in mid November and I am looking for a jacket recommendation for standing on a boat deck for protection against cold, wet, wind and rain whilst not being super bulky. Not planning any strenuous activity down there other than walking the streets of Ushuaia. Any jacket recommendations?

    • I would get a Macpac down jacket when they go on sale (they're pretty much Ozbargain uniform at this point) and get thermals/compression clothes to wear underneath. A lot lighter and you will use them more at home. This is a ski jacket so you'll really only use it a couple weeks a year best case scenario and it won't be that warm (as it's deigned to be worn by people moving around)

a down jacket is not the best for windy and wet boat decks - down doesn't insulate well when wet.

A shell like this jacket would be fine, with whatever warm layers you need underneath. The same as you'd use it skiing or other outdoors activity.
You can always compare it to coastal/offshore sailing jackets made by: eg. Musto, Gill, Burke, Helly Hanson. Which at face value primarily are a waterproof/windproof/breathable shell with or without insulation.

I wear the same basic goretex jacket hiking in the rain, snowboarding, and on a wet windy boat deck no problem. Specialist jackets for these activities will offer more features aligned with the activity (eg storm cuffs/powder skirts/etc) which can improve function but aren't strictly necessary.

      • Have travelled with a Macpac down jacket for years.

Definitely no good for protection against cold, wet, wind and rain!!

Will be a soggy, cold mess in the conditions described! Have fun trying to dry it out!!

Need a good outer shell over it in those conditions outdoors!

Recently picked up the suitable Marmot Minimalist 2.5L Gore-Tex Paclite for $128 to wear over the down & thermal gear.

I reckon layer up… get a good rain coat (2.5 or 3 layer), long sleeve wool or polypropylene thermal, merino wool top, polar fleece and then the rain coat. Thats probably the lightest warmest setup. add some ski gloves and polypropylene glove liners for your hands and then do much the same for your legs - long sleeve thermals etc.

That way you can head out with layers and switch stuff around as the conditions require rather than having one big heavy warm coat
