Not suggesting the link you gave is such, but fake saffron is a thing.
Yeah I’ve heard about that. Also trying to understand the gradings. This is listed as A+ but are threads. Whereas one site I read said threads are grade A and A+ is red only saffron. Other sites were also selling with other random grades (A++, A250+)
Sellers are trying to outdo each with A+++ etc.
From a reputable seller, "Premium/Grade A+" means that there's very little broken threads in the package.
When buying saffron, if you stick to the technical terms of the saffron threads, you can be confident of what you're buying:
Super Negin: Considered the highest quality saffron due to its long, fully-red threads which are free of the yellow/orange stem. It offers maximum flavor and aroma.
Negin: These saffron threads contain a small amount of yellow coloring from the stem, which results in a slightly lower concentration of saffron compared to Super Negin.
Sargol: Meaning "top of the flower" in Persian, Sargol saffron is made up of only the red stigma tips. This type of saffron may have lots of broken threads.
Pushal: The most affordable type of saffron, but it includes a significant amount of the orange/yellow parts of the plant that are considered to have little to no value.
HTH!
@bargains lover: Here's an illutration of the above names: https://persaf.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/saffron-typ…
Ours have passed all Australian biosecurity and quarantine procedures for importation. Imported from Khorasan Iran (a reknowned region for growing some of the best saffron in the world), so we can guarantee the quality of our products.
Edit: I've just had a quick look at the ebay item you've posted, which is a lower grade saffron.
Ours is Super Negin, which comes from the best part of the saffron thread. The analogy is like tea leaves, tea leaves coming from the tip is more prized than those from the rest of the branch. Super Negin is the most expensive and rare trim of Saffron. Super Negin saffron is known not only for being the most potent, flavourful and rich aroma but also for its aesthetically pleasing features. Super Negin threads are longer in length and contain no yellow or orange threads.
There is a competitor it seems.
