Mrs Mac used to be the best pies, but they changed something with their pastry in the last couple of years. Now, IMO, Herbert is #1 for supermarket brand

    • +2

Aldi ones are pretty good (the fancy ones)

      • How much are aldi ?

        • +3

The 2pk Aldi ones have recently gone up to $5.49 here in Victoria. Not sure about other states.

      • +2

These are nicer then the aldi ones

      • +11

The Aldi (Elmsbury) gourmet pies are the very same Herbert Adams in a different box. My go to pie!

        • There is a small difference if you look at the nutrition panel, but I agree they taste very very similar.

    • +1

Mrs Mac used to be the best pies, but they changed something with their pastry in the last couple of years

Ah so it wasn't just me thinking they had gone down in quality.

      Stopped buying when that happened…

    • Which Mrs Mac pies are you guys talking about? I think the famous beef pies smell too oily, but the brush and bake ones are nice.

      • I didn't even know there was different ones. I've only ever seen the ones that come in a clear plastic packaging.

        • I had Herbert Adams beef and mushroom today. The pastry is not bad but the meat reminds me of the meat pies/sausage rolls I used to get from school canteens. They all have this mild but noticeable stinky smell usually associated with low quality meat. Mrs Macs brush and bake pies are the only pies that don't dont have this smell, but they are more expensive ($7.50 on sale), and they are supposed to be baked not just reheated.

    These are the best pies!

  • +1

Thanks op , these are definitely the go to

  • So the $2 are targetted Flybuys? I can't find mine.

    • +1

Not targeted, it's for anyone who has flybuys. Just need to remember to scan your card at checkout. Guess they're trying to boost sign ups

      • oh ok, thanks for that. I take it as no limits per scans?

        • +3

Doesn’t appear to be, I bought two packs of the Sealord fish via a similar deal last week and discount applied to both.

          • +1

@morse: Confirming that $2 discounts applies to every individual packs. Bought two packs for $8.60.

  • Time to stock up

  • +2

Good grief , 2x Herbert Adams pies are now $9 when not on sale ?

    • this is what happen when you hibernate through the 9 interest rate hikes. seriously though can you list a handful of things that have gone down in cost?

      • +4

        DDR4 RAM :)

        • good point.. a hand full of them will do

          • +4

            @StephBlanks: They're my favourite chips!

            • +1

@Sleeqb7: They would go well with the pie…..

            • @Sleeqb7: prices for your handful of chips come down in price. my fav don't come down in price but in size

      • Sweet potato seems better priced now than 6 months ago. And nothing else. Literally nothing else.

    • nope, usually 1x Herbert Adams pies are $8 when on sale

  • +2

Has anyone else noticed the flybuys members cheaper priced items are the ones that are always empty?
Tried for the scotch fillet this week.
Ended up going to aldi where their rump steak was $5 / kg cheaper than coles on sale rump , and their brisket was also cheaper and available in much more manageable smaller sizes.

    • Order online for pickup, same deal with me, scotch fillet completely wiped out

Aldi beef isn't usually good from my experience, mince is ok, but their steaks are usually crap.

      • I think it just varies depending on the luck of the cow/cut.

I usually eat 1-2 steaks a week. I've bought a few of the cheaper rumps from either over the last few months (depends on which direction I'm coming home from) and I can say I've only been dissatisfied with an Aldi steak once.

In saying that though, last week I had the most delicious, tender steak (could not believe it was a rump) I've ever had, and it was an unassuming $6 rump from Aldi.

      • I agree, they used to have vacuum sealed rump steak, no fat and they were pretty good, now their steak is pretty tough, as is Woolies. I get the Coles rump medallions.

    • I had no problem getting the scotch fillet. The scotch fillet deal is also on until 14 March. This deal is stacking two discounts so only this week.

    • I haven't bought meat from ColesWorths for years.
The local IGA Foodland sell far superior rump ,sirloin and marinated minute steak at $15/kg, Whole scotch fillets at $19/kg.

I've seen ColesWorths charge a constant price around $40/kg. Don't know how they sell a single steak (unless marked down multiple times).

As for Aldi, I only like their brisket @$17/kg.

      • I can vouch for aldi brisket .
Their rump seems OK as I sear then pressure cook until falling apart.

        • +1

Currently have one in the freezer..and the pressure cooker is just there…hmmmmm

  • +2

I've been scared of buying Herbert Adams ever since I bit into pieces of blood vessels in their pies without knowing. looked through and there was like 4 pieces…Never happens with more popular/mainstream brands like Four n Twenty.

  • +1

The last time I tried one of these it had a lot of fat and gristle. Didn't enjoy it at all.

    • Fat = Flavour

    • +1

Yup same here, fat I dont mind but gristle - no thanks.

  • It's high time for pie time :D

  • Does anyone know if this offer applies to online orders?

    • No idea
      Asking the same

Online C&C orders or just in store only??

(Coles online and Flybuys don't talk to each other and both try to dismiss you when you have an issue and blame the other)

What happened to sargents chicken pie? They were soo good

    • +1

      Sargents are gone…totally gone

      • +1

A crying shame. That top pastry. So good!

  • Amazing pies, but be warned they are 2000kJ and FULL of salt/sugar. If you're trying to be health conscious for a lunch or eating these daily, these are not that option.

    • I can only see 1.3g of sugar and 850mg per pie.

Is there alternative healthy snack you can recommend??

      • +5

Carrots and a tin of tuna!

      • Coco pops?

      • Not a pie? Yogurt &museli, protein shake, fruit, can of tuna, cheese and bread, boiled egg. Pretty much go for 90% of foods and you're making a healthier choice. Though pies can be delicious, i wouldn't consider a pie as a snack food though.

    • +1

500 calories for lunch? Probably reasonable assuming that they fill you up until dinner. But they probably don't.

    • I'm really struggling to find any food that's healthy and filling. yoghurt, protein shake etc, fills short term but just can't last, they're not fulfilling. Then I end up munching on chips/biscuits right before bed.

      • Try intermittent fasting and high GI foods. Also fruit is great to tie you over.

        • Did you mean low-GI foods?

  • Thanks OP how did you find the special, there’s nothing about it in the catalogue? Wanna make sure I’m not missing anything else. Thanks.

    • +9

I found this list last week https://www.coles.com.au/offers/flybuys I can’t remember how. Maybe a link from the flybuys app 🤷‍♀️ it appears to run for a month, but will stack with weekly specials. Eg last week the sealord fish was on special with extra $1 off. So I have a new habit of checking the link on Wednesday to see if there’s anything worthwhile stacking. I’m presuming there’ll be new discounts on 15 March

      • +1

That's an awesome find, kudos for sharing…

      • +1

        Awesome! Thank you for sharing

      • +1

        Thanks morse!!

  • Anyone remember when Herbert Adams pies used to come in a tin foil dish that would somehow make the bottom of the pastry deliciously soggy?

  • How do these go in the air fryer?

    • +2

If they are frozen i defrost them for a bit in the microwave. So the insides are slightly warm and you don't dry out the gravy. Then five or six minutes in the air fryer to hear the insides right through and crisp the pastry.

    • As per what rodericb said, making sure that it’s a low temp like 160c or similar after microwaving

    • +3

Here's what I do. 3 mins in the microwave then 6 mins at 180c in the air fryer. Ideally let sit in air fryer for a further 10 mins. Adjust air fryer time if skipping this part.

My favourite supermarket pies. You can find this and similar offers in the Flybuys App under Offers —> Spotlight —> Flybuys Members Price

    • +1

Yup - I think that’s how I found it. Seems to be relatively new and taking over the 1/2 price deals.

      • +1

You might be right here but the flybuys specials go for 2-3weeks (to 14.03.23). I noticed last night when shopping they had a lot more prominent 'Flybuys' tickets throughout the store showing customers the savings if using their card as well as the normal bright yellow special tickets on other items. We bought pies, choclate and quiche because of this promo and also got our 'spend $80 and get 2000 points' on top so overall a good shop.

        • +1

I did a similar thing last week and will do another today. I’m Lucky my 2000 point shop is only $60 pays to have two cards as you get better bonuses the less you spend/scan.

  • This deal is not in my S.A. catalogue…..grrr. I have found it under the link mentioned above though…https://www.coles.com.au/offers/flybuys

Thanks. Keep posting these Deals! 👍
