Do we know the chipset in this? Or, it is a lottery?

Notice: just ASM225CM or JMS578 chip can support TRIM , NS1068 or JMS567 not support
UASP can't use for Linux system
And because our case chipest is sent out randomly , so support protocols not sure.

As Billy used to say on the footy show… SPIN THE WHEEL

      • Another FOMO purchase. I doubt it will be ASM225CM or JMS578. Hope I am wrong. Will find out when it arrives.

Had to google Billy on the Footy Show, I don't watch it so I am not sure whether it is the Melbourne one or the Sydney one.

YMMV, I bought the previous two deals that were even cheaper and they both use JSM578.

Thanks, good to know. Though honestly, this is just a toy. I have USB 3.2 gen 2 chipset based SATA enclosures. I use them for proper SATA SSDs. They are technically overkill since SATA SSDs cannot reach 1000MB/s.

        • +1

Actually the previous deal clearly stated on the page "Support UASP protocols and TRIM function". So maybe wait for those to go on sale again.

          • @digitale: What's the highest sequential read/write speed you can get with your enclosure? Around 440MB/s?

            • +1

              @netsurfer: I get around 420MB/s with a Crucial MX500 1TB SSD SATA.

        • They are not overkill, as my SSD only reaches 350MB/s in a 5gbps usb enclosure. It reaches 520MB/s when directly plugged into PCIE SATA card.

Just wished the NVME enclosures were this cheap.

    • You should be able to find them for ~$11-$12 from time to time on AliE (maybe even cheaper). Also, there tends to be less chipset guessing. A lot of them tell you which chipset you get.

      • Any specific NVME enclosure models that you'd recommend?

    • Try finding a 3.5"…

  • The plastic and construction feels very cheap with this. Better to buy something else unless you can only afford this or don't care.

  • The last time I bought one of these it never came

  • I bought couple of these a while ago. Arrived quickly, Working like a treat

  • What are the pros and cons of using a direct cable connection (USB-C to SATA) without such a case?

    • +1

Using a case is better, as in case you break the case it is likely only the USB port that breaks, compared to a direct cable which has a chance of breaking the SATA connector (and resulting in permanent data loss). A case also provides some drop protection. Using a direct cable might be cheaper.
