Recommendations for Router with Land Line Ports

I am looking for a router that allows me to use my VOIP with a land line phone. In the past I used a Tp-link archer vr600v, and found it done the job well although the firmware was not the best and I could not find DD-WRT for it. It got fried after a power surge. :(
I think the latest version from Tp-link is the archer vr2100v.

I would like to see what other options with land line ports are out there but have not found many in my searches some recommendations would be appreciated. The ability to add OpenSource firmware would be a plus.

I like my land line phones as I have an elderly person in my house but as a side note how do others connect to VOIP I am assuming it’s just through smart phones?

Thank you for any input.

You need something like this Cisco ATA-191-3PW-K9 (Replecament of SPA-112) which will connect to whatever router of your choice.
If I were you, I would ditch the landline altogether, and just use your mobile.
For the elderly, give them a mobile something similar to Alcatel One Touch, or teach them to use Google Nest Hub, which can use a Telstra account to make or receive calls.

Alternatively, buy one of those Cisco IP Phone System - 7960 and configure them to use as your personal VPN phone.

      • Thats looks bit fancy đŸ˜€

      • Yea that is fancy. :)

    • Thanks for the info.
So do these Cisco's just plug into the Ethernet port of a router?
I wonder if you can attach extensions to one as we have 3 existing land line phones in different rooms, that would be great.
The land line is $10 per month unlimited calls and I think a mobile is around $30p/m, we don't need a mobile so why pay the extra, but I get where you are coming from.

Which cisco you talking about, I used to had SPA-112, thats just plug into router, then phone plug into it, they used to be around $50.

The 7960 can apparently configure to use directly to the router, they about $10 second hand.

Just get a boost sim for oldies.

I use a Grandstream HT801 as a separate ATA adapter that I can attach to my router. That way I can choose whatever router I want.

If you're after something cheap and effective, a Telstra Smart Router Gen2 would do the job for $30 used. Can either get Ansuel firmware, or use tch-gui-unhide to unlock the extra features & remove bloatware without a full reflash.

    Heaps on eBay and Gumtree

    • This looks interesting, will check it out, thanks.

Forgot to mention, make sure you look for/get the Technicolor version (model DJA0231), as the alternative Sagecomm version isn't customisable.

I bought six of these for home & work and while they don't excel in any one field they are a good all-rounder. The inbuilt SIM backup is great, but if you aren't with Telstra it's not guaranteed to work.

        • Have done some quick reading and they can be used with a number of ISP's, mine included. How do you flash the firmware like you mentioned above, can't find any info online. Also can you add more than one VOIP provider?

@patrick321: The WAN side can be used with any provider yeah. The included SIM is Telstra branded, and once it's not linked to a billing account may get suspended - though you can put your own SIM in.

The guide to install tch-gui-unhide is here :
            https://github.com/seud0nym/tch-gui-unhide/wiki/Installation

Which should walk you through the install steps, including rooting the router.

I've not needed to myself, but I'm pretty sure you can add multiple VoIP providers as well as allocate them to various handsets, including the FXO port as well as dect paired handsets - since the router can be it's own base station as well.

            • @Switchblade88: Thanks for the great insight, do you know where I can get Ansuel firmware you mentioned and a guide on how to install?
Also do you know if the device has call forwarding? The TP-Link's had this and it was very handy.

  • Pay $10 for groundwire sip client on your mobile phone. Problem solved
