Not really feeling MakeMKV - their whole thing of 'half free-half paid' seems like something conjured out of the mind of somebody looking to scam the average internet user.
Besides, Virus total had one website report a Trojan on it - as suspected.
One that stood out to me was videobyte - it seems OK and doesn't have any positives on VirusTotal, yet.
What's everybody else's experience like?
My virustotal report said that there was a Trojan in the program.

You can have it free, but have to keep updating your key, or pay for it and not have to worry about it… I don't see what the big issue is? They likely want to reduce the chance of people just choosing to pirate it as well
You question the business model, yet who's to say it's their full-time business (it likely isn't)?
@BargainHunterJohnnyB: A website which takes time and effort to create and maintain, which the creator gets paid by ad revenue etc but which was a part time gig when it started
@BargainHunterJohnnyB: I use MakeMKV often for DVDs and Blu-rays and can confirm it's a false positive.
Just make sure you've downloaded it from the right website (makemkv.com).
I don't know how old you are, but MakeMKV is a staple in the industry and has been around forever.

Makemkv does not contain a trojan, as long as you download it from the official site at least. I've ran it for years and I've never had it trip up my AV.
Another ripping product called AnyDVD, now prefers to also have makemkv installed to enable certain functionality (Libredrive). My opinion is that this must be a conspiracy and they're all in it together.

It's probably flagged a trojan or virus because it's a key decrypter unlocker of CSS AACS or whatever anti piracy encryption they've used to rights protect the disc and stop people like you coping it.
If you have a tool that makes the secure un-secure will make it bad.
I've used makemkv since March 2012 without any problems. It has been well supported for a long time and works fine.
You might like to reconsider your "feeling" - maybe it's wrong?
