365 Day or PAYG Mobile Plan for GPS Tracker Device?

Hi,

I've just bought a Personal 4G GPS tracker for my mum who is having dementia. As far as I understand, the device doesn't require much data to operate. I'm wondering what would be my best option for a sim-only mobile plan:

  1. A cheap 365 day prepaid plan (Catch, Coles, Woolworth, Amaysim… etc)
  2. Or, a PAYG long life plan, like ALDI

Anyone has experience using a GPS Tracker for kids or pets can share some opinions? Thanks a lot!

Aldi have blocked usage in GPS trackers now, it's against their terms of service and somehow stop the sims from working once they detect it.

Yeah it's a shame, I used the Aldi sim for a few years. Some people I know have had their sims cancelled. I have now changed mine to amaysim PAYG because I don't want to risk Aldi randomly cutting my tracker off!

        Info for reference

  • I use a PAYG Lebara plan for my Galaxy Watch Active 2. The minimum recharge is $10 with validity for 360 days.
it's charged at $0.02/Mb. So maybe check the tracker's data usage.

I have been using it for about 4 months, and only active when the watch is disconnected from the phone. Which is usually when I go running, 1hr day x 2-3 times per week.
My current balance is $9.70. But I also remember making a call or two.

    • Thanks for the info, I'm researching Lebara plans

    • Can I buy a starter pack advertised for a 30 day plan but activate it on the long life one? Woolies has $24.90 30 day sim for $6 atm

      • I just checked the Lebara app, and it seems like you can shuffle around between plans there. So you should be able to do it.

  • CMobile sells a $5 plan specifically for GPS trackers: https://www.cmobile.com.au/plans/c-red-5-gps-tracking-plan/

    • Worth mentioning this uses the Voda network.

      • It's also $60 vs $10 at Lebara

        • Depends on your use case I suppose. CMobile gives you 333Mb p/m whereas Lebara is good for 500Mb/365 Days. Use all that data before expiration and you'll be required to recharge $10 earlier. Could still work in your favour though (eg. if you use less than 2.5Gb/365 days = 5x $10 recharges = $50).

Why not AirTag? Unless she lives in the middle of nowhere where literally no other people come by, then the many Apple devices out there will constantly be giving you her location and it'll use their data plans. It doesn't have an SOS button though.

    • I thought about this once also for use one my kids whilst on excursions.

If they in fact did get lost, a dedicated GPS with data will give a much more pinpoint location of where they are.

If they are on the move, then a airtags location will be not as helpful.

    • I thought about it. But I'm using an Android phone, not an iPhone. Also, I paid $68 for a full feature 4G GPS Tracker which can receive/make calls in emergency situations, for a bit more expensive than the AirTag cost only…

      • Hi! mrdng, are you able to tell me the model number of the 4G gps tracker you have got, thanks

        • I've just bought a 4G GPS tracking watch on eBay. It was actually shipped from China

There are a few more modern models now, all around $60 - $70

  • For PAYG, a Vodafone $40 SIM costs $5 to $15 often, will give 1 year at 4c/MB, so 1GB data with no calls made.

I got an unsolicited SMS from Voda today offering 3GB bonus data, so now I have 4GB for the year on it.

The Optus tablet listed here recently for $99 included 20GB valid for 6 months. You can't buy any plan like that, can you?
(for less than a $99/yr unlimited calls sim)
