    Aberlour 12 $105 ouch

    • $84 with the code though, pretty good Whiskey for that price

    • +5

Prices are high. Too much Bud, not enough Booze..

    • +3

Just get the superior version and never look back: https://www.smwhisky.com.au/product/aberlour-12-non-chill-fi…

      • How does it differ?

        • +2

          It's better.

        • Sorry, mate I was busy last night.

The one I linked is 48% and non chill filtered. The reg one is chill filtered and 40%

          Here's an article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chill_filtering

          • +1

@rosebank: It was abit of a rude response. And you still got 2+ lol
Hard to drop $100 because someone says the scotch is 'better' without giving anything more as to why.

            • @cumova: Yes, I agree and I apologised. And then explained why its better.

At the same time, this is the description from the link for the NCF version:

Aberlour has released a different version of their 12 year old double cask by making it more of a craft presentation, increasing the abv to 48%, altering the different cask proportions slightly and making it non-chill filtered so it holds on to more of its original flavoring profiles, giving the mouth feel increased body, and a rich texture.

              • @rosebank: Is 48% too much? Do you get burn? I guess if it's like the standard 12yrold maybe the cherry if tame it.
                I usually drink mine 1 ice 3 shots/90ml

                • +2

                  @cumova:

Is 48% too much? Do you get burn?

This is a very difficult question to answer. The regular 12 is chill filtered, partly so it doesn't get "foggy" when you add ice. Non chill filtered whiskies still contain fats, esters etc which will change the colour of the whisky with ice. However, I only buy NCF whikies because I want those esters and stuff because I truly believe they add to the whisky, and are more true to the spirit drawn from casks.

As for burn, I own whiskies that are above 70% ABV and I drink them neat, not bragging, but because I'm used to it. Sometimes I add water to cask strength whiskies, but very rarely. So a 48% ABV whisky will not burn for me. So if you add ice to the reg 12, I would say that the NCF might burn for you, because everyone is different.

The thing with high ABV NCF whiskies is that you can always dilute it to your preference. However, if you buy the minimum ABV for Scotch, 40%, and you're not satisfied with the body, mouthfeel, whatever, you can't add extra spirit.

So the 12 is 40% and 80something after discount, or you can buy the one I linked which is 48% and NCF for 100something shipped (so in terms of alcohol content, it's about the same), try it neat, take small sips and see if it burns. If it does, add water to your liking. I would personally avoid ice, because it chills the whisky and destroys the nose. But there's no "right way" to drink whisky, do what is right for you. i hope this helps.

    Redbreast 21 - $321

    • +1

Solid picks, but Signet was 200 the last sale

  • +4

Wow are there really any bargains here

    • Bickers gin is about $10 cheaper than normal that I got fromBWS and Dan M last time.

    • +4

      My trick is

      • Look at the things I regularly buy that are rarely on sale (Naked Grouse is my key one for this, I'm also very partial to the Four Pillars booze-free gin for those nights where I'm pretending my liver will last past age 50)
      • Search for "1L" and see if anything interesting pops up (Cutty Sark 1L is a decent price for a mixer whisky)
      • Filter by spirit of choice and the ebay Deals & Savings button (like the E.H Taylor Small Batch. Decent at $128, although price has skyrocketed the past 8 years or so. The Zubrowka Bison Grass Vodka is fantastic with apple juice and down to $37. The "member offer" at dans is $55)
      • Check out the spirit bundles but usually they're terrible.
      • Compare all of the above to Dan Murphy's

It used to be they matched their sale prices from the website on ebay. But since those days are gone, it's only good when you know the price of your favs.

    • Price of alcohol went up in Feb. You should check out dans it's insane.

      • Havent had the chance to try it yet haha.

  • Wild Turkey 101 for about $58. That's reasonable isn't it?

  • anyone tried The Dalmore Cigar Malt yet?

    • +2

      yes. it's not great

      • hey mate, thank you. I'm looking at the Aberlour 18 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky, is it a good whiskey?

Nicks has it for $150.00, is Nicks a reputable seller? Thank you.

        • +2

Not sure about the whiskey, but Nicks is a reputable seller

        • +1

It's fine, or you can get the A'bunadh, or Glanfarclas 105 1L for $130, both of these are >60% and have no age statement

But I highly recommend this as alternative to Aberlour 18: https://www.nicks.com.au/products/glenfarclas-15-year-old-si… and it's on sale

          • @rosebank: Imo all aged glenfarclas is okay but nothing special (15/21/25) - I'd definitely get A'bunadh over any of them (and the 18)

            • +1

@sakurashu: Glenfarclas 15 is fantastic, but I agree with the 21 and 25. The only ones I rate are the 15 and 40. I have a bottle of 40 left, and don't even bother with the core range (or any Aberlour), I only buy Family Casks.

            • +1

@sakurashu: I actually did not enjoy the A'bunadh (cant remember the batch#) or the 12 and 18 for that matter and dislike that fact they bottled the 18yr at 500ml. I personally would pick a Glenfarclas over an Aberlour any day of the week.

I've currently got the Glenfarclas 105, 12, 15, 21, 30 and rate them much higher than any of the Aberlour offerings in the same price brackets.

        • Aberlour 18 at Nick's is only 500 ml though.

  • +1

Business is back in original ownership I believe. Long time since I've bought from them but the 23rd Street Distillery Gin Gift Box seems a decent buy.

Alright (profanity), I'm enjoying my beer and got out of bed watching Gossip Girl (the OG series, new one is trash) for this so I'm going to make this quick. I have tried all of these and they're all winners. If you disagree you won't be invited to the launch party of my lifestlye mag TRUE PATRICIANS I have also considered the price compared to "well, back in my day…" And I also may have missed some

    Bourbon:

    • EH Taylor
    • Four Roses Single Barrrel <—-GET THIS! It's my favourite bourbon distillery and I always (profanity) forget
    • Johnny Drum Private Stock
    • WT 101
    • WT Rare Breed
    • Rowan's Creek is a (profanity) steal

    Rye:

    • Rittenhouse 100 Bottled in Bond THAT'S IT

    Irish:

    • Redbreast 15
    • Yellow Spot

    Not gonna bother with regions

    Peated:

    • Ardbeg Ooogieee
    • Ardbeg Corry
    • Laga 8
    • Ailsa Bay (lightly peated and new distillery, and also very young. BUT TRY NEW SHIT!)
    • Talisker 10 (just barely because I love Talisker)

    ex-Sherry:

    • Nothing, go to Nicks and buy a litre of Glenfarkers 105 for $130

    • no wait, Bunnahabhain 12

ex-Bourbon or double cask whatever idc it tastes like ex-bourbon:

    • MUTHERFUKIN CLYNELISH 14
    • Glencadam 15
    • Benriach 10
    • Benriach 21
    • Bladnoch 11
    • Craigellachie 13
    • Balblair 12
    • Old Pulteney 12 (I love this distillery. I don't like the 40% but it's cheap, it's good, and it's the MARITIME MALT!!!)

    Aussie:

    • 36 Short, only because I was at an event totally wasted and I talked to the distiller who pretended to like me asking a million questions about his set-up, the cut, what malt etc. The whisky is also good, and I'm repping my home state.

    Misc:

    • Michel Couvreur Candid Malt. I've had this and it's not bad, but it's absolutely not worth the (profanity) money unless you need to impress someone with some cool facts and a fancy name and bottle.

So this (profanity) French guy called Michel right, he buys casks from Scotland. Then he finishes the cask in a different barrel, or in this case chucks it into a 250L PX cask. Sometimes he makes a blend and calls it (profanity) I dunno L'especiale Blenderino. But casically he's an indy bottler, BUT WAIT! This dude brings the cask back to Burgundy and ages the whisky in….. LIMESTONE CAVES or some shit! How cool is that?!

Seriously tho, I hate his shuit because it's so (profanity) wanky.

    Anyway, I have to go.

    • +1

Aaah I remember when gf105 was $105. And then u needed to aerate it for a good while.

      • 105 for 105, but what was that? 5-6 years ago?

        • Most likely but felt recent, my concept of time is poor.

    • +5

I check them out again this morning for something to buy and just on the first page of the whisky page: Ardbeg Corry was about $150 and Signet $225 after discount. Now they are $175 and $308 (lol) respectively.

I've bought quite a lot of bottles from Boozebud in the past and never had a problem with them, but this is horseshit.

      • +1

Yep, was gonna pick up the Corry today and had it in my cart but it went up to $220 before lunch. Still have a few good deals they havent jacked. Old Pulteney 16 and Bladnoch 14 havent been jacked…yet.

        • Good picks. I miss the OP 17 and haven't tried the 16 but it looks good. Same with Bladnoch, I have the older ones before they reopened, and have only tried the 11; but I've always liked Bladnoch, one of the better Lowlands

          • @rosebank: The 16 will be my first OP but have read that the 17 was great and some say the 16 is just as good if not slightly better. You should defo grab it so you can validate that call for for us ;)

I've had the Bladnoch 11 but it took about 6 months and half the bottle for it to really open up after which it was bloody delicious! Looking forward to the 14 now.

            • @gcar304: These guys are cheapest for the 16, but I'm not buying from them. I just ordered a 12yo Signatory CS and have a 10yo CS coming next month.

I'll try the 16 eventually, it's supposed to be a travel exclusive but it seems everyone has it

              • @rosebank: Yeah fair enough! I'm only couple years in so still have lots of OBs to try and not brave enough to know where to start with IBs. Would like to get a Linkwood at some point but just so many options that I just put it on the back burner.

                • @gcar304: Linkwood is great… if it's an IB. The only "OB" I'm aware of was the Flora and Fauna series, which was all the distilleries that Diageo cbf to give proper OBs like Mortlach, Aultmore etc in the 90s

Nicks has it for $160, but I'd rather gamble on an IB like the Adelphi 9yo CS for $190, also on Nicks. Aldelphi is a great indy bottler

                  • @rosebank: I had acutally shortlisted down to the G&M Linkwood 15 for $168 at liquorworld and Firkin Linkwood 12 CS for $199 at the whisky list but couldnt decide what I wanted and bought the Ledaig 18 which has been on my list for a while now.

I have no idea how you do it with the insane options you have available to you in the IBs. Thanks for the recommendation will defo look into Aldelphi. The Glenlossie 13yr has already caught my eye.

                    • +1

                      @gcar304:

I have no idea how you do it with the insane options you have available to you in the IBs.

15 years of alcoholism. You try all the OBs, get bored and move onto IBs, not saying all OBs are bad I have a 1989 OP lightly peated which is a cracker, but one of the best OPs was a G&M single cask bottled for Japan.

Firkin is a relatively new IB, but from the ones I've tried, they are pretty good.

G&M is possibly the biggest IB and they have a lot of sub-brands. I remember Connoisseurs Choice used to be 43% and complete garbage. My friend bought me a dram G&M CC Port Ellen years ago at a bar and I told her to stop buying me shit whisky, and she was pissed. But the CCs now seem to be better.

I have a Blackadder Linkwood 22yo Raw Cask I haven't opened yet; I paid $200 (don;t know when because I stuipidly didn't add a "date" column to my spreadsheet). I rate Blackadder, and I like the idgaf ugly labels and plain cheap boxes. The Raw Cask range has a gimmick where it's not fully filtered so there's bits of the cask floating around in the bottle.

I have the Firkin on my watchlist on TWL and it I think I'll buy it, because the specs are good and It's fully matured in PX and Oloroso, unless they lied on the label. But if you want a true taste of Linkwood I would suggest the Adelphi because it's young, and matured in a first fill ex-bourbon hogshead. So it'd be more spirit and malt forward and can't hide behind the stronger influences of a sherry cask. If it's a tight cut, the new make is good, and the hogshead is good, you'll get an excellent taste of Linkwood. When I think of Linkwood, it has always been ex-boubon. You can always try a Linkwood sherry bomb later.

                    • +1

@gcar304: Ok, so I found the bottle, open the box and saw this shit. I think I drunkenly tried to open it ages ago, saw the cork was (profanity), and put it back in the box. Not the first time it has happened. Couldn't get it out with a corkscrew, and I';dd normally decant the whole bottle and pour it back in with a filter, but because I'm drunk I thought I can do it with a knife, So there a few bits of cork in the bottle now.

SIDE RANT: Scottish distilllers need to say FU to "tradition" and get with the times. Corks are the (profanity) worst. The Japanese know what's up, they;'ve been using screw caps for years, and it awesome! Yamazaki 12 is $400 ffs and it's a screw cap. NO ONE CARES! Most Aussie distillers use synthetic corks or screw caps. Sullivans Cove uses screw caps, and their shit costs thousands now because of the stupid award (still salty about that). GUESS WHAT? NO ONE CARES! I (profanity) hate corks, Glenfarclas are notorious for shitty corks. Someone with a pair needs to stand up at the next SWA meeting and say, "umm, look guys, everyone is has been doing screw caps or synthetics for years… maybe we should try it out?" and then get shouted down by Dr Bill or some other jabroni. Luckily when I went to Tassie to visit all the distilleries, lark gave be a shitload of synthetics in different sizes, so when I successfully uncork an old bottle, I swap the cork immediately.

Anyway, i probably wasted a few drams trying tto mcguyer the cork and I;m drinking it right now and its an exceptional example of a Linkwood. Pm your details and I'll send you a 60ml sample

Edit: I've tried this on an old tall bottle of glenfarclas 105 and it actually works, just be careful and don't pop the whole cork out.

                      • +1

@rosebank: Bugger! I kinda like the sound a cork makes when you first open a bottle but agree the synthetic corks should be the way forward. Almost all gin bottles come with them now.

Yeah ive used this method for getting partially broken corks out of wine bottles but luckly have never had this issue with whisky. Gf's ugg boots work best from previous testing.

You're too kind and it would be rude of me to turn your offer down. Will PM my details :)

Hello rosebank. As people have pointed out, prices recently have increased in the market. We have held off for as long as possible but are slowly getting them up in line with the market. However, these increases were not supposed to apply to the eBay store while we are in the promotion. Unfortunately, they were updated not only on our website as the intention but also on the eBay store. We have now reversed the pricing on the range that changed and honouring while stocks last. We are sorry for the confusion caused.

        • How does that work for people who purchased while the prices were temporarily increased?

          • +2

@yacman: Hi yacman. We will happily refund the difference. We are looking into if this occurred and on what orders. It was a small range of products that were impacted. If you believe your order was please email details to [email protected] and we will check it out.

        • Hey, what's going on with your distribution? I ordered 4 bottles and 3 were sent to a different state. Can't report missing item because they show as "delivered", can't start a return because there's nothing to return. What a colossal f-up. Worst whisky buying experience ever, and I've been buying whisky online for 15 years, one time with an order sent to South Africa instead of South Australia.

    • +1

      Great list!

I like having some easy but high quality everyday sippers on the shelf.

Some really interesting bargain whiskies on there are the Indian single malts: Paul John's Brilliance, Bold and Edited.

All 46% abv and non-chill filtered. I've ordered the Brilliance a few times it's really nice!

The Bold is peated with Islay peat. The Edited is a blend of 15-20% Bold and 85% Brilliance so lightly peated.

Another one I've ordered a couple of times is the Glenglassaugh Revival. Also 46% abv and non-chill filtered at under $65 on this promo it's very sippable or a luxury mixer.

      • +1

I actually went through all 12 pages of the whisky section in the store and didn't see any Paul Johns, but I agree, I've tried their core range and they're solid malts, but I'm more of an Amrut fanboy. If they had Fusion, Intermediaate Sherry, Portonova, or Catamaran (yes, it's kadhambam or something but I call it catamaran) I would've recommmended them, along with the PJs

I don't really keep up with the news but was told by a friend that there's a Diageo owned distillery in Goa.

Glenglassaugh Revival is a weird one. I got a bottle when it first came out, and it was fine, not great. But what are they still reviving? It's been about a decade lol. Try and find an indy 1970s bottle, they are sublime.

    • +1

What do you think of larceny/Elijah Craig? I haven't had many bourbons but keen to try some more

      • +1

I haven't tried either but Elijah Craig is on my list. It's got a great reputation.

      • +1

Larceny isn't good. I like the regular Elijah Craig and the rye, but i love the Barrel Proof.

What have you tried and which ones did you like?

        • +1

          I've tried only a few:
          - Elijah Craig (regular) - loved this, turned me from bourbon just in cocktails to drinking it neat
          - Larceny - I had heard good things from the US for the price point but wasn't a huge fan
          - Angel's Envy - middling
          - JD - I'd rather drink road tar
          - Gentleman's Jack - reasonably big fan, other than the main oak notes of sweet vanilla/caramel I get something a little fruity

I've had bulleit's core bourbon and rye and quite liked the rye which surprised me and woodford reserve was my go-to for any cocktails (usually a sour).

Asking for recommendations I'd probably ask for:
          - A good sweet bourbon to drink neat - what does the barrel proof add to the Elijah Craig?
          - A rye (I've heard good things about Gospel but never bitten the bullet to grab a bottle)

          • +1

@sakurashu: Barrel proof is just higher ABV, but don't even bother, the prices are insane.

If you like Elijah Craig, You'll probably like EH Taylor and Four Rose Single Barrel because they're more corn forward. If you want to try something with more rye in the mashbill, maybe start with Wild Turkey 101, or Rowans Creek ($94 is a bargain) and see if you like them. All of these are ~50% ABV which is my sweetspot. I like my bourbons to be >50%. The Elijah Craig small batch is 47% so you're not far off.

Rittenhouse Rye Bottled in Bond. Gospel Solera is ok if you want to try an Aussie rye and it's quite sweet, and also reasonably priced. Ryes should be spicy.

            Rittenhouse is the truth.

            • +2

@rosebank: Thanks mate, appreciate your insight and time

              • +1

@sakurashu: Sorry, I forgot that WT 101 is a high corn mashbill, so that would be similar Elijah. I was thinking of WT 101 rye which the fvckers discontinued.

Get the Rowan's Creek or anything from Willett/KBD for a high rye mashbill

    • What about baby saz for $75? Sorry I see you keep saying Rittenhouse but it's more expensive 😅

      • Baby Saz is fine, and $75 is a good price. Rittenhouse is just better imo

    • If you disagree you won't be invited to the launch party of my lifestlye mag TRUE PATRICIANS

That's ok, let me know if you launch a lifestyle magazine for plebs like me, I think most of these are out of my price range!

  • Thanks OP, got some IPA and Cider for cheap. Cheers.

    • Cheaper than $35 for 23L of OUTSTANDING IPA or 21L of Apple cider for $20… that's what home brew costs me, excluding electricity and equipment.

      • My home-brew is always rotten. Need to up my game.

  • shame you can't stack vouchers codes

  • Everything so expensive not much cheaper than Amazon.

  • Will this stack with Westpac 10% ebay shopback promo?
