What The Hell Did Domino's Do

You now have to "upgrade" each pizza, so if you use a $33 code for 3 pizzas 2 sides you now need to pay an extra $1.95 for each value max, $2.95 for each traditional pizza, $4.95 for each premium.

Traditional used to be the base, now its value… now there's no longer any $30-$33 vouchers as it will cost an extra almost $9 for 3 traditional. On top of the "service fee"

This is an outrage.

You even have to pay $1 extra on the 1.25l drinks for the sides you get in the voucher… for each drink.

    Something something inflation?

Never been good pizza. Obviously good value for the price.

    • +40

      More like shrinkflation.

e.g. pay more, get less ingredients, thinner dough, not cooked properly because ovens not adjusted to changes, worse quality and service overall.

      • +14

Isn't the solution not to eat Dominos? We have choices :)
        Just food for thought…

        • Isn't the solution not to eat Dominos?

Who do you work for? Pizza hut? lol jk.

I was just countering the point of "good value" above. I don't think it's just a price rise but a drop in quantity/quality as well.
But I didn't want to come across just as F- Dominos.

      • +1

Yea, the sizes in Dominos have shrunken alot… a large is the old size of a small…how can people not notice this BS

        • +2

Because it simply isn't the case. The large size has only one change in the last two decades.

          • +1

@jvsnumberonefan: simply the case that i've grown bigger in the last two decades

          • @jvsnumberonefan: LoL Simply isn't the case = It simply is the case…

2 decades or not - it was noticed and is still fresh in everyone's memory.

      • +3

Make charts and dough haven't changed and won't change (only notable change regarding dough is that thins are now pre-manufactured). The amount of grams of each topping each pizza is supposed to have has not changed.

Ultimately the pricing does slowly go up, as unfortunately we live in reality in which min wages increase, cost of petrol goes up, cost of ingredients and stock goes up among many other business costs.

        • +7

Min wages don't go up with the cost of living index or the CPI or inflation, so, next time you think this please remind yourself the real cost of wages has gone down.

          • +6

@Assburg: Thanks for arrogantly arguing against a point I didn't make lol. I'm not arguing that minimum wages aren't increasing linearly/to scale with the of cost of living or inflation? I'm simply stating the basic fact that minimum wages have and do slowly increase, thus the cost to do business increases. Hence the increase in cost of food from Domino's…

Minimum wage is minimum wage, minimum wage relative to Cost of living, CPI, inflation etc is the minimum wage relative to Cost of living, CPI and inflation etc. Simply saying minimum wage has increased is not incorrect.

            • +2

@jvsnumberonefan: Just sounded like the typical conservative talking point that "mIn WaGe InCrEaSiNg $1 is the reason we have $6 small coffees now"

Apologies for coming off as too dismissive.

But…really if min wage goes up say, 2.5% in a year but the CPI goes up 4%… Profits of businesses who adjust prices in line with CPI and maintain steady state will increase, just on the fact that they're now paying their employees relatively less than last year.

              • +1

                @Assburg:

Profits of businesses who adjust prices in line with CPI and maintain steady state will increase

Well they also have to pay for the increase in costs of all the other expenses too. Some will be higher than CPI. Plus factor in super increases, and other not thought about costs and a lot of business will increase their pricing beyond CPI to protect their profit margins.

              • +1

@Assburg: That's assuming people are getting paid the minimum wages. The wage is market driven, minimum wage is a safety net. Businesses are unable to find people. To attract workers they will need to increase the wages.

                • @peekabooo: For the first time in a very long time that's true, but it is only so in the full employment situation we're in now.

Nah not my intention or what I think at all haha, I don't support child labor and casual jobs slowly becoming less viable to live off because they are 'just an entry level job' :)

            • @jvsnumberonefan: a bit aggressive, but I'm not surprised that dominos has increased prices. No idea how they ever made a profit off me in the past.

…the people that go in and order in store however….cha ching.

        • Yeah I am just sharing what I experienced at the location closest to me. It was so bad I decided then and there I wouldn't bother anymore and I was not interested in travelling to another location.
Only guy working there looked pissed off by the way and most of the orders coming in were the Deliveroo/Food App type, not sure how that affects things but it must suck doing your whole shift alone with delivery app drivers just picking up pizza's with zero interaction. (they just popped in one by one and scanned the barcode on their phone then they were out the door).
I don't mind prices going up slowly, but when the quality and quantity seems to drop off the cliff at the same time I had to make a decision about considering the local pizza location again.

          • @harshbdmmaster718:

Yeah I am just sharing what I experienced at the location closest to me.

That's 1000% understandable. I honestly think Domino's is one of the most inconsistent large franchises, can be good, can be dogwater. And whilst I don't meat to invalidate your experience, experience is also somewhat determined by luck, there's a few customers I've delivered too regularly but every time they happened to order at a bad/busy time, I feel really bad for them haha. The opposite can also occur. We serve hundreds of customers every day, it's unfortunately possible to consistently be an unlucky one.

May I ask which store? Afaik ALL Domino's only accept orders through aggregators, delivery is handled by Domino's drivers.

Honestly I feel you. If you asked me about the experience a few years ago I wouldn't have complained at all. Decent experience (for the price) at my local location. Back then they also had multiple people working there especially around the time I order which is peak/dinner time in the evening.

May I ask which store? Afaik ALL Domino's only accept orders through aggregators, delivery is handled by Domino's drivers.

Yeah I'd rather not air that dude out and reveal my location. I only perceived him as hating life not sure if that was really what he felt. But seems like if they didn't do food apps they would lose business, because I was the only person who walked in to order during the whole time I was waiting. I'll be honest though I found the website to be difficult and glitchy.

Here's something positive though. I tried Crust (they are owned by Dominos right?) a few times and was very happy. Costs a lot more but if it's only occasionally it's worth it IMO. The only negative I have to say is I don't find some of their options appetizing. But that can be subjective right.

              • @harshbdmmaster718:

I tried Crust (they are owned by Dominos right?)

Can't see any link between those two companies. Crust is owned by RFG who owns places like Michels, Brumbies, pizza capers…

    • Not really considering there toppings and pizza sizes are tiny compared to other places.

      • Reading one year old posts are we?

I'd rather eat a pizza hut box than dominos pizza, same amount of toppings and flavour.

    • Box vs Pizza

      • Box wins… Always.

        • Pineapple on the box

        • Only in china for their minced pork box buns.

          • +3

@Yummy: A man who never eats pork buns is never a whole man!

    • Had pizza hut for the first time in ages the other day. The pizzas were small, but it was a lot cheaper and nicer than dominos!

    • +1

Dominos isn't amazing, but these days Pizza hut is actually worse.

      • Not in my area, I’d rather a tomato and cheese sao than dominos overcooked and under toppinged cardboard slices.

  • +20

Wow dominos has just destroyed whatever good value they had left.. I can handle the shittier than normal pizza from almost all other pizza joints, I can handle the lack of toppings, I can even handle the forever shrinking pizza base for the price you paid, but now the cost is the same as going to any local pizza joint, getting 2-3 pizzas, 2 garlic bread and drink, and you can bet the pizza will be twice the size!
The fam’s standard deal would be 3 pizza’s and 3 sides coupon delivered for $37 to $39 depending on changes etc.
Just put the same order through, order total now $53.50. They wish lol

    • They still have a voucher code for that exact deal for $37.99

      • anything displayed in the voucher code is now no longer achievable as my local domino's charge service fee on top.

      • Since 4th of July 22 there is also an extra 6% delivery charge.

  • +41

The price hasn’t really changed in 30 years, just the size and quality has. Why not find a good independent local pizzaria and buy one quality pizza for $25 rather than 3 horrible small pizzas for $33

    • +4

Gawler Slice Pizza, the best pizza in the northern suburbs in SA. They are now basically the same price as Domino's but better pizza.

      • same price

including the price after dominos coupon discounts ? aka traditional ones for about $7.5-8.99 ??

        • +1

their large are between $10 to $15 like domino's without vouchers. but they also have 10% vouchers occasionally and 25% off first order on their website.

i only go there when i want party pizzas, dominos was for quantity instead of quality. and gawler slice quality over quantity. now the price is a lot closer

also gawler slice large is 12 inch, apparently dominos large is only 10 inches?

          • @ilovepizza: Thanks for the recommendation! I'll definitely check them out.

    • +7

While I agree with the local pizza joint being preferable to Domino's, there's a clear reason why someone would choose 3 Domino's pizzas over 1 pizza for a bit less. Quantity vs quality. I guess if you need to feed a few ppl and everyone likes different things, you're still better off with 3 than 1. In saying that, there are still plenty of pizza shops around that have single pizzas for under $20.

      • -1

my local pizza shop does 39.90 for two large pizzas and a small garlic pizza with a 1.125L soft.
half / half the larges for 4 varieties and add peperoni to the garlic pizza (for a slight additional cost) is our go to order.

i haven't eaten chain pizza store since my local was $6 larges (some 20 years ago probably)
actually i tell a lie - ozbargain deal had me try dominos for like $3 pizzas or something last year. was pretty shit.

    • +1

The price hasn’t really changed in 30 years,

      Really?

15 years ago the standard delivery deal was 2 pizzas, garlic bread and a bottle of drink for $20. The pizzas are way smaller now, and they usually want $30 for the same thing in most coupons.

We used to get Dominos a lot, but rarely do any more, because it's just not worth it, unless there's a ripping coupon deal that actually works with our local.

    • +1

The price has changed, the size etc has barely. The large has been the same for like a decade now.

  • +11

Dominos used to be our cheap option for pizzas, until they dropped our meatballs on the front deck one night, and put them back in the box without telling us. We only discovered what had happened the next day when we saw the BBQ sauce on the deck and checked our security camera. Yes, we ate them. Gross, and dangerous since one of us is immunocompromised. We were already disenchanted that their pizzas had shrunk in size and grown in price - so gave them up. We now have an Ooni and make our own amazing pizzas, which has ruined takeaway pizza for us now! In a pinch (for a quick and easy lunch) the Coles brand frozen pizzas are actually pretty good. We add extra toppings/cheese sometimes, but they're OK as they are for $4 each. Dominos will never darken our door again.

    • +1

Couldn't you tell from looking at the pizza if it dropped face-first? I mean, there would be melted cheese around the where the meatballs would have been, etc?

But then again, I guess it's dominoes and there was probably one meatball and barely any cheese.

    • +1

Did you take this up with Dominos and receive a full refund for your meal? If you had vision of this, could have gone to the TV stations for a run… they love that stuff.

      • Yeah, they wanted to offer us a free meal next time, but we insisted on a refund - there will be no "next time"!!

    • -1

The mistake was buying a security camera to monitor your pizza delivery.

I know you love pizza OP. But then maybe you would find something better than dominoes?

Also I think Pizza Hut and Dominoes really fell off in quality and quantity during covid.
Last time I ordered I remember they just had one dude in the shop running the whole deal and he looked like he did not want to be there.
Showed in the pizza I got too. It had barely any toppings, was thin and wasn't cooked properly (somehow dry but soggy at the same time and a bit doughy).
I think he just wanted the store to close and put him out of his misery.

    • That’s a truly inspiring story. After I’ve wiped the tear from my eye, I will make an indelible mental note to get off my lazy arse and make my own damn pizza! Next time. Maybe

      • +1

I will make an indelible mental note to get off my lazy arse and make my own damn pizza! Next time. Maybe

It's not as easy as you think lol. Which is why I got takeaway pizza in the past.

        • Nah to be honest making your own dough only takes a few minutes really, once you do it a few times it's super easy!

          • @buckster: Yeah but the effort tho, the result has to be a pretty goddamn good pizza for it to be worth it lol.
Mine always ended up being a bit too "homemade" and dry kind of like an actual pizza from Italy maybe, but that's not what everyone wants lol.

But yeah I'm sure if I worked at it hard enough I could make it taste better.

            • @harshbdmmaster718: Yeah, it just takes a bit of practice and a good flour - but you're right it isn't the same as that fast food pizza base, bit more crispy so not for everyone

  • I remember in high school 17 years ago when I got 2 pizzas, a 1L bottle of coke and a garlic bread delivered to me for $20.

Best deal I ever scored was 3 pizzas delivered for $24

What about big % uncapped Cashback on top?

Can't remember the deal but pretty sure there was a cashback deal where you basically paid less than $5 to $6 per pizza pickup.

Edit: Sorry you guys are talking about delivery. My bad I should have read the original comment.

    • I used that all the time. Min delivery at the time was $20 and their website was pretty glitchy so you could stack easily codes.

Select delivery, add the 2-for-1 voucher for like $12 or something, add two pizzas, add the $5 for two sides voucher and then add 3 garlic sauces for $0.50 each to hit $20.

Boom, two days food for a poor student, delivered straight to my door.

  • +4

All fast food is now not worth the cost unless you're buying their specials like $4 value range etc. The best value I've found at the moment is Subways 6 inch BLT/Pizza subs - $5 and you can stack that sub with all of the free fillings for a decent feed.

Unfortunately places have upped their prices considerably:

Zinger Box was $11.95 now $13.95
Cheeseburger Super Stunner was $6.95 now $8.45
    Cheese/Hamburger Happy Meals were $4.95 now $5.45

Better off learning to make the food yourself or buying frozen alternatives to heat up.
