Raspberry Pi 4B 4GB $129 Delivered @ Jaycar

756

Back in stock, haven't seen the 4gb for a while.

And before the inevitable not a deal comments, these are selling for nearly $200 preowned on ebay (not that I'm encouraging scalping). This is therefore by far the cheapest way to get one of these right now.

        And in stock.

I've bought three RPis (3B, 4B 2gb, 4B 4gb) in Australia in the last six weeks all at RRP. Jaycar can suck it.

          FB marketplace doesn't count

        • Where from?

          • +3

@iDroid: The 4B 2gb and the 3B were from Core. The 3B is still in stock and has been since before Christmas:
            https://core-electronics.com.au/raspberry-pi-3-model-b.html

The 4B 4gb I got from a small shop I'm not going to name here, but it was a physical shop who sell parts for embedded signage, among other things.

            • @skoorb: Thanks!

              • @iDroid: No worries - note it's not the plus model so only has 100mb ethernet and a very slightly slower processor. Still good for many projects.

        • Please do tell, where from?

    • +7

Y'know, in this dude's defence, go back in time 18 months, swap the RP4 out of this comment and replace it with an RTX 30xx and he'd be at +30 to a chorus of 'hOdL' 🤷‍♂️

      • You'd still be hodling at $129 for a RTX 30xx? /s

    • +5

I look at the price and feel a sense of shock too at just how bad the prices have gotten. Not a reflection of this post though, just the market and possibly the PI Foundations inability to resolve supply constraints.

It is sending the prices into a region where people do need to very strongly consider whether they’re better off grabbing one of the i5 Mini PCs frequently appearing on OzBargain for around the $160 mark. While that’s more on the surface, add in to your Pi purchase a case, storage (which may be an SSD and an enclosure depending on the use case?) and maybe a mini-HDMI adapter to the price and you’re basically on par, at which point the mini isn’t at a massive cost disadvantage. For certain hobbyist stuff the PI will always win, but more traditional PC stuff and even running home automation the mini PCs might end up being better if the extra power consumption isn’t a big concern.

Really hope the pricing, and supply, is sorted out soon either way.

      • Yeah 100%. We rely on these in industry for many small tasks. I like the low waste of these. I'm not using a whole computer just for a display on a TV/screen or just to monitor the temperature within a cabinet. The price point, power consumption and ease in which you can replicate them is the huge win for me. They've only just started to come in but everyone's been a big fan of them.

Definitely hope we can continue to get them at reasonable prices. We'll definitely be looking into keeping a stock of them if the prices get more reasonable. We don't really wanna be pricing out consumers either.

      • +1

'Any' industry has zero incentive to fix this problem as it is not a problem for them.
The supply side of things is now 'controlled supply', they are holding tons of stuff in warehouses, singing the covid supply constraints song, and supplying stuff in a trickle <controlled supply> for MAXIMUM PROFITS, and it is working for them (across multiple industries).

  • +7

Maybe I had better put my 2 8GB Pi on eBay and retire. Although by the time I got around to it, they would be back in swarm proportions!

    • Was just thinking the same lol. Can get a much more powerful refurb and have change these days.

      • +1

You can get a decent USFF with eight times the power for around the same price, and as much as I admire the low power of Pi's, the annual costs of running a 20W USFF won't exactly break the bank.

        • There’s a recent batch of Wyse 3040 on eBay for $55 a piece shipped. More similar to Pis than USFF. I tested mine and it draws < 5W nominal.

  • What's everyone using theirs for? I was thinking of doing PiKVM for my Unraid server or using it as a PiHole replacement/backup with my server.

    • +2

I use a Pi for Volumio as a music streamer, another for Klipper + Mainsail on my 3D printer, and the final one as a qDevice for Proxmox.

      • Same, volumio is great.

Guess I can't use the same pi for other purposes.. tried putting a few retro game roms on the connected usb, don't if can reference that network location for retroarch or other apps on tv for gaming (or didn't Work)

      • Got one for the same reason but found out that need to pay for another subscription to Volumio to use for Tidal streaming. Maybe set it up as an emulator

        • +1

I think that's only if you want to use Tidal Connect but if you have an iOS device, you can Airplay it to the Pi

        • Tidal family be ok then, should upgrade to that..

          • @G-rig: I have Tidal family, that shouldn’t affect how it is sending to the Pi, right?

            • +1

@Nomoneynotalk: Not sure, I use Tidal connect from the phone or PC app, can also play via the volumio web interface. Btw I have the old virtuoso paid plan, maybe doesn't work on the free version?

              It's a neat solution..

      • Already using 1 for klipper + fluidd, much better than marlin

    • I’ve got three sitting unused; one is earmarked for retroNAS and I’ve not gotten around to setting it up, an Pi4 8GB I bought when a restock came available I haven’t found a use for, and a Pi 400 (keyboard form factor) that was unsuited to the use-case I had envisaged and was made redundant.

      • +4

        Sell sell sell

      • I also have a Pi400 unused in its box.

My Pi4 8gb is also a bit sad after moving HomeAsisstant, PiHole and bunch of other services over to Proxmox on an old 8th-gen i3 NUC. Performs much better.

        • Yeah, in the same boat here. I have a Pi4 8GB and Pi400 sitting around. I moved all my docker containers and VPN services to my unRAID server and haven't looked back. There is still a Pi4 4GB sitting at the top of our cupboard as a redundant OpenVPN server in case I can't get to unRAID for whatever reason.

I've been tempted to sell over the last year or so but never really bothered.

    • Mine is a nas and torrent box. I've originally gotten it to learn to do robotics stuff, but I've never got around to figuring out how the gpio works, so I kept it simple and useful.

    • +2

      Retro arcade.

      • Agreed. Got 2 picades. And the kids love them as much as their switch.

      • I just found out about these recently and want to do one too some day! Put of curiosity, what systems do you use with your pi? I was hoping to go at least to ps1/gba, but not sure if it can, or if I should get something a bit more powerful for some heavier systems like ps2 or so

        • +3

Just installed emuelec on a $50 android box using this tutorial. And i have to say, it blows anything a pi can do out of the water. Buy an android box off amazon. Make sure it has an s905x3 or s905x4 processor. And follow this.

      Home Assistant.

Mine crashed on the weekend and I realised how utterly dependant I am on it now.
I couldn't even work out how to switch my lights on manually 😂
I have Adguard running on it too which basically does what PiHole would do.

I've got a zero running a Hyperbian ambilight around my TV too.

      • Don't you find the Zero laggy for hyperbian? I tried it and the sync annoyed me so I pulled it out and haven't put a pi3b/4 in its place yet

        • +1

          Nah not in the slightest.

I did have to tinker with the settings for a good while, but reducing the resolution of the signal (not the display) and a couple of other things I would say basically brought the latency to zero.

Then I added in a bunch of easing to smooth it out so it didn't trigger anyone's epilepsy whilst watching sport.

I never have any performance issues with it.

      • Do you run it from an SD card? Cos all the read/writes will kill it. I bought a cheap PC and I'm running mine off that - massive overkill I know but I am so incredibly reliant on it that for it to go out for even a day would be hugely inconvenient!

        • Yeah I'm just running it off an SD card.
3 years going strong without any issues so far.

          • @pauly85: Have a SD image backup?

If not strongly recommend doing so for the inevitable problems with an SD card despite what optimisations you can do to limit writes.

They are cheap to replace and reimage / restore but after the second died I moved to a SSD.

    • Wireguard gateway, adguard and reverse proxy.

I built a Karaoke with a Raspberry Pi based on https://github.com/vicwomg/pikaraoke in my basement (so far my neighbours have not complained yet).
Besides the Raspberry Pi, I bought an amplifier, 2 microphones and a projector from eBay, also reused 2 old speakers from my garage.
The best investment and most successful Raspberry Pi project :-)

I’m using a Pi 3B+ for Klippervfor my 3D printer.

I’m using a Pi 4 2Gb for Home Assistant, Adguard Home and Tailscale. I picked this up for $80 when Core Electronics has three in stock a couple of weeks ago.

All my other “server” stuff is on an Unraid box cobbled together out of old data centre parts, or in AWS.

I’m using a Pi original model B with an IR sensor and LCD for a ghetto IR camera I used to find draughts in my house last winter.

      I’ve got another 3B+ that I’m using for MT32-Pi with a misterfpga.

I have another original Pi, a 2B, and a 4 8Gb that I’m not using right now. I plan to use the 4 as a basic PC for the kids at some point.

Open Media Vault NAS (with network TimeMachine backup for the Macs) / Plex Server (it’s not as underpowered as many say provided you have Plex pass for hardware decoding) / Homebridge (for non Apple smart accessories to link into HomeKit). 2x 12tb WD hard drives connected, 1 for every day, the other receives an RSYNC backup of the first periodically. Much cheaper than a QNAP!

    • I have one hooked up to an old monitor running Dakboard in the kitchen. Weather and photos top half, bottom half is a calendar, linked to our personal and work calendars, so the parents can see what they have on at work while making brekkie, and the kids (and mainly I) can see what they are doing each day at or after school.

    • Mine just take a photo with a webcam once per day so I can document the growth of my houseplants…

    • I use mine with rclone with Google storage to have unlimited "local" storage thats hosted in Google. Its fully file level encrypted and it smashes it.

I have security cameras footage, backups, etc, pointing towards it. Works great!

  • +6

Not worth it. Looking at the 8GB model which is also in stock, they are 70% more expense than it was in 2020. There are better alternatives at this price point.

    • +4

Definitely, even the low power celeron fanless pc is better choice.

      • +1

Agreed. These make no sense anymore. People are just buying them for the band name.

      • Celeron PCs have better performance with higher power consumption. So, it's a matter of choice.

      • +2

        have to agree.

for example, a system with intel celeron n5105 delivers 3x performance, at the cost of only
        * 1.5x (when idle)
        * 3x (under stress)
        power consumption than a rpi4

2nd hand desktop doesn't necessary mean intel 6-8th gen, it could be celeron j3455, which performs 2x than a rpi4.

we didn't have many choices in 2019 (when rpi4 was released), however it's now 2023.

      • I did a quick search and came up with https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004789833772.html https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003385180263.html (supports M.2)

You can't really justify a pi at current prices.

        • +1

There are also some great SBC's on Aliexpress too. i.e Orange Pi5, which is VASTLY more powerful than a RPI4.

          Raspberry Pi isn't the only Pi/SBC :D

I have a Nano Pi R4S personally, but I want to get something with an RK3588S soon.

  • If I hadn't already ordered an Orange Pi, I probably would've been interested …

But you're right, they were one of the first electronics stores of its kind. Good prices, negotiable, clean, well lit, people who actually KNEW what they were talking about…. list can go on!

    • +3

Yeah unfortunately happens all the time. I've always thought Jaycar was the biggest scam. I feel bad for people who don't know better than to shop there.

Very old news, i was beginning to wonder why ozb stop boycotting them for years lol

  • +4

For that price, is it better just buy a second hand desktop?

    • +5

power usage would be a lot more

      • +6

Would it be enough to compensate the difference in performance? A second hand desktop powered by Intel's 6th gen CPU is sold for around $100 for each on Ebay. I did my maths and concluded that I could barely save $20 each year even if I use a Raspberry Pi 4B over a desktop PC for 10 hours each day, 7 days per wk and 52 wks per year. Not only I could have more fun with a x86-64 system, but also could run a ARM simulator better with the Desktop PC than the actual ARM-based Raspberry.

To me, Raspberry completely lost the plot.

        • I'm not sure this pricing is the result of Raspberry asking heaps, but simply them not being able to keep up with demand and local retailers over charging because they can.

      • +2

Not necessarily. Many USFF use around 10W idle. More that the 3W of the Pi, but unless you are running on battery it is maybe $1/month difference.

You can get a SFFPC for under $100 with case, power, and SSD included. e.g.
