Is Vegemite Too Good to Discount?

So, I've finally ran out of Vegemite, and now I crave it, but I can't stand to pay retail for it.

I checked price hipster just now and learned that Woolworths are being Woolworths but from what I can tell as a result of my review of Coles price history and experience shopping at the local Woolworths, Vegemite just doesn't go on sale anymore.

Am I wrong? Who has Australia's cheapest (unit pricing) Vegemite?

  • Are you brave enough to try vegemite alternatives? Bovil/marmite etc

Not sure who negged you as Promite leaves Vegemite for dead and this is the hill I will die on.

      • that's 'cause it has more sugar in it … not that authentic salty tang.

Being able to stomach Vegemite and like it is an acquired taste that's kind of like a cultural initiation…
accordingly, having sugar-sweetened Promite just seems like whimping out on the strong stuff!

Sure it might be more widely acceptable taste to tourists, but that's not the point - it's bitter yeast laden toast, on sale or not!

        • +3

Promite has 18g of sugar per 100g while Vegemite only has 2.2g per 100g.

      • I'll bring the shovel..

  • Best you can do is join Woolworths Mobile/Insurance etc. to quality for 10% off entire shop once per month.

I don't check every week but I can't recall the last time I saw it on sale. You can get 10% off via subscribe and save on Amazon.

380g was 5.50 recently at Drakes, bought two to get promotional plate. Was often $5, but you know…..

People either like Vegemite or they don't, there isn't an in between.

The market is limited, hence discounting is unlikely to get more sales or converts.

My wife and I both think vegemite is ok but nothing special. We didn’t finish our last jar until 2 years after the best before. Our current jar is the smaller jar size and it’s best before was last year, it should be finished later this year.

      • +1

Yeah I don't think it's anything special either.

If anything I just know it's healthier than other usual spreads like jam/peanut butter..

But my opinion is it's not good enough to "jack" prices on.

        • OMG, dont let this out!! We will now have a slew of future posts demanding ACCC etc needing to investigate "VJ's" aka Vegemite Jackers.

          Move over eBay sellers….

    Here, you go…. You're welcome…

Expected better, jv. That's not even in the top 4 cheapest unit price on Amazon.

I think each jar size goes on sale about once a year.
We go through 4 or 5 big jars a year, and I bought a couple last time they were on sale, but have bought a couple at full price and the second largest size on special since.

I'm in the same boat, but I only like Cheesy Vegemite (Now Bega Cheesybite). I would eat it almost everyday as a snack if I could but I just can't justify spending $5-6 a jar that lasts me like 2 loafs of bread (Toast). That would last me a day / night….. Yes, that's a lot of sodium but meh

I got a $20 good-will credit from Amazon last year and bought 2 jars with it (plus a few other things) and honestly wish I just spent the entire $20 on Bega Cheesybite as I enjoyed it too much, especially because I hadn't had it in a few years.

I tried to cheat the recipe and bought a Vegemite alternative (Can't remember the name, but it was $3 for a jar) + bega cream cheddar cheese (yellow one), tried combining it to make my own Cheesy Vegemite and unfortunately it didn't even come close

  • When you start using vegemite to marinate lamb you go through it quickly. Amazon has it on sale sometimes.

  • Vegemite just doesn't go on sale any more

With no real alternative that is palatable, why would you need to discount?

I switched to Bonox on everything. A little cheaper but much more tasty.

    • Also good to coat Roast Chicken with, as do some chicken places.

While it may seem expensive, our vegemite lasts about 6 months, so we're looking at $10 - $15 a year…

Not worth any effort to try and save - this is OzBargain so yeah, grab it when cheap, but wasting more than 5 mins of your life on it is poor return.

  • Find some 10-15% off supermarket/amazon gift cards and that can be the discount. Or possibly look at iga or reject shop, might have some cheap ones?

  • I've been waiting for it to go on a decent sale for about a year now.. I've seen ten percent, maybe slightly more but not enough for me to buy it .

  • Vegemite is full of B Vitamins- I swallow straight up half a teaspoon 3 times a week, followed by toast with jam to wash it down good. It is fairly priced and lasts a long time and Super Healthy- good Value and worth paying full price for. Maybe give up your breakfast cereals instead so you can afford healthy Vegemite?

  • I still remember the vegemite deal at Kmart in 2018 - 455g for $2.00.

I haven't seen any great deals in recent times, but you can get 380g for $5.60 (down from $7.00) at Woolworths now until 09-May, or at Coles during their specials week 10-16 May.

    • Thanks. $5.04 on Amazon with subscribe and save 10% discount.

    • +1

I found a 250 flybuys point bonus on the Vegemite 380g which is $5.60 at Coles right now. Check your accounts.

      • Good one - post it as a deal!
