Telstra $300 Pre-Paid Sim Starter Kit (Activate by 3 April for 200GB Data) - $250 Delivered @ Telstra

450

Telstra has discounted their $300 Pre-Paid Sim Starter Kit by $50 and have added an extra 50GB of data if you activate the SIM card by April 3rd 2023.

This is a good alternative to Boost Mobile's $300 Prepaid Starter Kit, which you can often find discounted. Boost and Telstra both have the same coverage map.

Telstra has less included data if that matters to you (200GB vs 260GB), also some users have anecdotally reported that going direct with Telstra gives stronger reception and speeds. No idea if this is true or if Telstra gives greater priority to their own customers vs Boost. Urban legend until proven.

Similar to Boost Mobile, Telstra will also be capping their data speeds to 150Mbps from April 4th 2023. If you activate your $300 Telstra or Boost Prepaid SIM card by April 3rd 2023 you should get full uncapped data speeds for 12 months.

  • I wonder if we then can change the physical sim to esim after activating it

    • +1

Yup you can with this Telstra prepaid sim. I see an option to do it in the MyTelstra app.

What types of plans and services are available on eSIM?

Telstra’s pre-paid and post-paid plans are available on eSIM, providing you’re using a compatible eSIM-enabled device

      https://www.telstra.com.au/coverage-networks/mobile-technolo…

    • Yes, I did it last week
You do it through the My Telstra app

    • No problem eSIM -> physical SIM.

However if you do physical SIM -> eSIM, the physical SIM is void and can't be reactivated.

      • <Ahem> Then again, if you have a physical SIM, and swap the number to another SIM, the original SIM is void and cant be…

It looks like in the U.S the carriers are now only offering eSIM, so to me it's another "improvement" that really isn't, in that we lose the portability and gain convenience and rapid churning - but with a built-in module that is programmable from external sources, rather than being toggled either on or off.

        I'm stocking up on popcorn…

        • If I travel freq to the US and they seem to be going eSIM only (I'm basing this on previous comments), would I be best served sticking to a physical SIM for Telstra and reserving eSIM for when in US?

I was there in April and had helluva time trying to get a US SIM to work in my Australian bought Samsung S21.

note: I have been limited understanding of the esoterica of SIMs, bands, etc.

    Price beat at Officeworks?

    • Yeah you should be able to if Officeworks has the Telstra $300 sim.

The $250 price in the deal is a publicly advertised price with zero delivery fees, no reason they would refuse to price match.

    • -1

Can’t price match Officeworks. Not the same identical item because with Officeworks, you only get $150 data included and not the $200 bonus data.

      • If you are lucky and find an inattentive pimply-faced snotty-nosed teenager working there, you can often still get price beat

      • +1

I just tried my luck and they price beat 2x starter packs over the phone (1300 OFFICE).

Not sure about bonus data etc. but I was happy to pay less ($237.50).

Paid over the phone, click and collect in the next couple hours hopefully.

        • Order is ready to collect!

          • @nickeveli: Did you get the bonus data?

            • @zelliot: Unfortunately I won't know until I swap Sims when my current Boost expires at the end of March.

I'm pretty sure Telstra chat will be helpful given the purchase date and the timing of the advertised offer.

              • @nickeveli: Same situation here. Waiting for Boost to expire.

    • +1

Did it in December in store

    • +1

Yes, OW did price beat . paid 237.50
      in & out in 10 mins .

  • +1

Thanks. I'm waiting for the Boost deal, because of that 60GB :)

As OP mentioned that some users claims that Telstra gives priority over Boost. I tried to google it but couldnt find anything on whirlpool or Reddit

    • +2

Yeah I saw it first mentioned on Whirlpool Forums many years ago, like 2017/2018.

Did a quick search on it, here's a recent one I found that mentions Telstra getting priority over Boost Mobile.

      https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/thread/9zvvky19?p=890#r71999…

I have no clue if it is true though, like I said, the discussion on this has gone back many many years with no definitive answer.

      • +1

I did a lot of research back then, and could only find reference to ALDI, telstra wholesale (teachers unions etc) getting most towers, and boost like 99.9… but exotic ones, like remote mining towns etc was pure telstra only.

But after all this time, if it was a real concern… it would’ve been blown/open by now

        • -1

I agree it's 100% a non-issue even if there's a hint of outlying truth to it with edge cases. Ive been with Boost and Telstra before and haven't been able to tell a difference.

Thought id mention it in my post though as a bit of Boost vs Telstra trivia. Nothing to take too seriously.

  • +1

Thanks for posting this. Exactly what I had been waiting for. I'm also not sure if Telstra has better coverage or priority over Boost, but im willing to pay a little extra for the potential peace of mind when working remote.

    • +1

Telstra = Boost coverage everywhere in Australia. Includes Boulia, Bedourie, etc etc. We've done a heap of travel in the bush and there's no coverage difference.

      • That's good to know. I'll just go with Boost next year

      • Do you know whether Telstra provides any other benefit (like Telstra wifi, Telstra store,…) which Boost users don't have access to?
        Thanks

  • Is this deal available for Boost customers port over?

    • +2

Yes this deal is available for Boost Mobile customers, you can also port your number directly to Telstra from Boost.

No need to transfer to a third provider then to Telstra.

      • +1

        ok cheers

  • +1

    Does this plan support esim?

    • +6

Does the first comment of the deal lead to the answer?

      • +1

        I’m blind. Thanks

  • Better download speeds that Boost? As they are adding speed caps…

    • Same speeds as Boost, they are both adding the same speed caps on the same date ;)

edit - unless you get the $60 per month prepaid sim which is uncapped or sign up to a post-paid sim only plan (lowest plan is capped at 250mbps, higher plans are uncapped)

Most of the prepaid plans will be capped though at 150mbps the same as Boost Mobile.

Activate this sim by 3rd April to get bonus 50GB and uncapped speeds for 12 months!!

  • Would i be right in saying you can't use this with number share for iwatch?

    • +2

Yeah you’re correct, you can’t use this sim to extend your phone plan to your Apple Watch.

Doesn’t work with Pre-Paid sims, only Post-Paid mobile plans unfortunately.

Head office from Officeworks do not price match LuckyMobile anymore due to fraudulent website. eBay are still investigating their eBay store for the same reasons.

    • +1

Ah okay thanks for the heads up, wasn’t aware. Literal 60 second search to give the other person the cheapest options.

  • Perfect of you want telstra network with esim, volte, vowifi, access to telstra store for movie and hardware deals within budget

Sick of boost, leaving them next month for Optus as I don’t want to risk moving to Telstra if it has the “same coverage”

I couldn’t even listen to Spotify the other day on my lunch break. Ran a speedtest and hit 0.5 / 0.7 with boost.

Visiting my parents atm and I hit 35Mbps with their Optus phone, hit 10Mbps on mine which is the most I’ve seen in over a year.

    In ACT.

    • +1

Telstra sim hits 44Mbps and 8Mbps upload for me in the top end NT. You must be in a black spot.

      • Cheers, yeah probably the time of the speedtest. Hitting 30Mbps now but I’m sure it’ll slow down as the day goes on. I guess there’s a lot of network congestion in Canberra on the Telstra network. Optus seems to be better here comparing speedtest between the two at the same time of day. My dad travels a lot for work in the surrounding towns and he has had reception when a co worker on Telstra couldn’t even make a call. Goes against the coverage info Telstra put out.

I haven’t been with Optus yet so willing to give them a try. Even Kogan was better than my experience with boost so far. Shame the service can’t be as good as my Telstra internet

  • No 5G for prepaid Telstra?

    • +1

You do get 5G with prepaid Telstra.

Web pages that say it’s not included are outdated.

    • +2

Posting this on a P7 Pro, Telstra $300 prepaid SIM, connected to 5G.

  • hey, I was wondering do we have to recharge for 12 months of the sim use. So can i just pay 300 and get 200gb and 12 months access?

    • Hey, when you buy the SIM card starter kit in this deal, it already comes with the "recharge" pre-loaded.

You pay $250 not $300. The price is discounted.

You will get the 200GB and everything else listed in the description for 12 months.

  • Cash back - Shop back $7.50 ??

  • Hi my pre paid telstra expires in April
(Same deal I got a year ago)

    Its says:
New services only. Future recharges will be full price. Online only. Limit two per customer.

    • +2

I think you need to port out to a different provider first then port back to Telstra (the sim in this deal) in order to take advantage of the discounted sim. Probably the safest/most straight forward way of doing it.

One another person has done it a different way though your experience may vary:

I’ve had success using a Telstra prepaid starter pack to renew my existing Telstra prepaid with no extra sim required. No port out port in was needed. Last attempted earlier this year.

I simply just activated the new sim, noted down the new number, then asked Telstra to change my new sim number to my existing Telstra prepaid number. They deactivated my existing service and my new sim got changed to have my existing number instead. Took a less than an hour and was painless.

I do this (buy discounted starter packs) instead of paying $300 a year for recharges.
