any cheap matching motherboard? seems all over $250.

    • +6

Yeah not sure on that, I was able to get an ASUS Prime Plus b650 for $303 off Amazon as that was the cheapest I could find.

    • +9

Unfortunately the biggest problem with AM5 is the board prices. Cheapest board I can find on pcpartpicker right now is a Gigabyte B650M DS3H for $288 so pretty overpriced.

      • +4

Don’t start me on ITX. Stock is real bad, pricing is horrible.
So go low-tier for high price, or recommended for insane money.

      • Dodgy board, I had to return it. Asus 650m Tuf was the next ‘cheapest’. Much better and works properly. Still all these boards a crap prices but damn… these chips are pretty sweet

      • Same board was $239 on ebay
Cant find any reviews for cheap b650 boards yet sadly

  • +1

Terrible CPU for Hogwarts Legacy though…

    • +9

      It will be patched.

    • -1

I thought AMD GPUs weren't really hit with the problems.

      • +2

        It is a CPU.

        • +4

This one's on amd though… 7000 series cpu and 7000 series gpu released on same year… like there are not enough numbers…

      • -8

AMD gpus have a lot of issues, some people report the die on the cards cracking, others the cooler wont function unless its in a vertical mount etc, if you look at derbauer's youtube he covers a lot of this

        • some people report the die on the cards cracking

not amd’s fault no? Ex mining cards probably either pressure washed or kept in high humid environment for too long.

          • @kaleidoscope: the cards are like 2 months old man, lol, dont worry i blindly defend stupid sh!t iv brought too

        • +3

My guy don’t go repaying shit you don’t understand fully. You are part of why incorrect rumours spread. As I recall all the dies were ex-mining stored in improperly humid locations. Water got under the die from that and when it was turned on, the water expanded into a gas and cracked the die (water is pretty much incompressible)

        • Used mining card run at 100% for 2 years in a damp shed :) and you blame AMD.. lol

          • -2

@vid_ghost: look at his latest video titled "7900XTX hot spot drama" how can month old car be mined on for two years…… HAhahahahahahah so dumb, and yes the dies cracking are related to those hot spots, omfg i always knew amd fan boys were stupid always waiting for the 'next patch that will solve all the issues' hahahhahahahahah

          • @vid_ghost: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHow31cWMZo lmao amd bricking windows now "2 years on mining in a damp shed"

  • +5

Waiting on local pricing for 7800X3D

    • +10

      Possibly almost at 7900X prices.

      • and only 10-15% improvement.

    • +4

Very similar by the looks of it

      • +6

The 13600k will be much faster in non gaming tasks though

        • Also a little bit more expensive 🙂

          • +2

@scud70: But if u factor in ddr4 and mobo then much cheaper

            • +6

@nelladream: Then performance falls behind in gaming…. Your stuck with ddr4 and a platform that's at the end of its life.. so worth considering these if it's a brand new build 🙂

              • +5

@scud70: Tbh if gaming is the main use of the PC, DDR5 and DDR4 won't make any huge differences unless u using a really high end DDR5 like 7200 above. And DDR5 mostly helps with productivity only.

              • +2

@scud70: DDR5 is very unlikely to become important for gaming performance in the next 5 years.

I'd take advantage of the great prices on fast DDR4 right now and get a very fast set of 2x8 or 2x16 and go 13 series Intel instead.

Same performance, a few hundred bucks less.

Unless the PC won't be used for games at all, you're wasting money you could spend on a better GPU for (checks what DDR5 is actually faster at) a few percent faster code compile times!? (Would even software devs care about that?)

  • +1

    What else is $100 off?

  • +1

I'll take it at $419, but prefer the 7700

    • Why is that ?

      • +1

Cooler/quieter. I'm over every last frame these days. The last time I looked at eco mode in the previous gen X chips there were some issues with stuttering. My current machines have a 3900x and 5900x, so a 7700x isn't really a deal breaker.

    • +1

Is running eco mode not the same?

  • Good price. Essentially a $340 CPU if you factor in the game!

  • Buy now or wait for Afterpay day? Actually, when is a good time to build a pc? Last year black friday was kinda disappointing

    • +2

I don't think there's reliably a good time of year.

"Wait until you can't anymore" is still the best way to go.

Right now ram and some other components are noticeably cheaper than the last few years because fewer people are building PCs. That's because GPU sales are at a 20 year low thanks to ridiculous overpricing.

It can't last forever, NVIDIA/AMD will cut prices and release mid/budget range cards or lose 90% of their market, but they'll wait until idiots stop buying the triple-priced high end GPUs, first. So it could be months or even a year or so. Even they don't know when the suckers will finally dry up.

But when that happens, a BUNCH of people will start buying other parts then too, so those may increase a bit.

But AM5 and DDR5 may fall quite a bit between now and then. They're a lot more expensive than intel and DDR5 right now with no real performance benefit.

  • Thanks OP
Would have preferred the 7700 too but cant argue for the price

    • Is running eco mode not the same?

      • Cheaper and free cooler (eg if $100 off applied would have cost $399

        • Are you able to run 7700 with the stock cooler though?

          • @Tleaves: Reviews say yes, comes with the wraith spire and its low TDP

  • +2

Maybe we can expect this price or less everywhere due to $100 us reduction.

  • What CPU cooler are owners of the 7700x using? Any recommendations?

    • +2

For air cooling the Deepcool AK620 is meant to be pretty good according to a Gamers Nexus video review.

Noctuas are more expensive options - here is their 7700X cooler compatibility list:
      https://ncc.noctua.at/cpus/model/AMD-Ryzen-7-7700X-1636

The NH-U12A is among the most expensive but saves space with the 120mm fans to increase RAM clearance (like the Deepcool AK620).
The NH-D15 uses 140mm fans and is similarly heavy but slightly cheaper than the NH-U12A (need to check RAM height will fit under the fan or move the fan up a few millimetres but then have to check that the fan still clears the case side).
      The next gen NH-D15 has been delayed to Q4 2023 - https://noctua.at/en/product-roadmap

i like the scythe fuma 2

Also like the peerless assassin 120

    • I've been using the Deepcool Castle 240EX. Gets the job done and haven't noticed any thermal throttling

    • Arctic 420 + curved optimizer -30 option.
Stays at 80° on benchmark programs.
      Ard 50° running games(lostark, gta5, etc)

  • +3

Ah! That feel when you bought a 7600 yesterday! Great deal.

    • +1

You bought a great CPU. 8+ cores is massively over-rated.

      • +2

Depends what youre doing with it and how long you want it to be viable

        • To me the longevity (or viability) argument doesn't hold, because if you have a 6 core CPU running well for years but eventually is no longer is fit for purpose, it is likely that CPU architecture is long superseded. Think about replacing a Zen 1 1600x with an 1800x. The few percent increase you would probably get would be from the clock speed not the core count. It would be far better to replace it with a 5600/x if mobo supported.

          • @buffalo bill: Maybe, but new gen consoles going to 8 core mean your going to be viable longer vs 6 cores

Anyway in this case your getting 8 for price of 6….
And it boosts higher if you dont want to mess with OC

            • @Lonewolf1983: I agree when the price is good then sure, get the 7700x. Higher clock and bigger cache too. I'd go this for the price.

Although in a situation where the 7600 was half the price (like the 1600x/1800x was), i would say the best cost/performance would be from a 7600 with a later update.

      • Thanks - and for all those reading - the non-x CPU's make a lot more sense! (less power draw, cooler and same speed available if you want it via PBO)

        • I mostly agree but paying a little bit more for an X (or higher binned) CPU may be rationalised if you can get the X on sale and have a cooler sitting around.

          • +1

@buffalo bill: Yes exactly right. If I hadn't bought the 7600 already I would've bought this purely on performance:price

          • @buffalo bill: My build is AIO, so no-cooler is perfect. Not sure about integrated graphics though.

  • Oh hell. I just ordered one based in this deal but see everyone speaking about 650 boards. I have a Gigabyte b550 aorus pro. And I am upgrading from a Ryzen7 3700x. The 7700x will work on my board right?

    • +5

No. You're going to have to buy a much more expensive AM5 motherboard and most likely DDR5 RAM to boot.

      • If ATX.
"swings and roundabouts" as they say.

I'm half-way through buying for a long-overdue ITX build. And the motherboard drought has pushed me away from AM4.
So I'm spending similar overall, but getting some great perks.

    • +1

      No different board and ram
5000 series is your upgrade option

    • Thanks all! That makes me a bit sad. haha… I thought, "Hey hey! I saved $100!". And now I'm. "Ok, so I need new DDR5 memory, a new motherboard, a new Windows 11 license (Mine was OEM), new Office license (OEM). I'm down, like, $700 now! hah… Ah damn.

      • +1

Rule of thumb. Always check socket compatibility before you dive head first into a new series CPU…

        • +1

Yup. An expensive lesson I just learned. I usually do! I was going to get a 5800x3d. Then saw this and compared. Saw it’s a bit better. So pulled the trigger. And completely overlooked compatibility. Idiot. Well. I’m down $1340 play the cpu to build a new pc with the old parts that aren’t compatible. My wife is glaring at me. So I’ll just keep typing. :)

      • You might be able to use your current licence by selecting the option that you changed hardware?

      • +1

Not sure what they’re like now but I used to ring Microsoft directly and tell them my pc/parts died and had to get replacement part and they always without hesitation just give me a new activation code.

  • +2

I suggest if you are purchasing it online, try bank transfer or go through their credit card verification process.

I placed the order yesterday with ApplePay via VPN and their system put my order as on hold (understandable). Today I received this:

In order to validate this order, due to the value and risk indicators, we need to request the following information:
    - One recent utility bill (power/water etc), rates bill, bank statement or similarly acceptable document showing the purchasers name and the shipping address.
    - Photo ID/Drivers License
    We require ALL information above..

I did a quick search and similar things have happened before: Reddit post.

I think it's understandable that they need some verifications as payment gateways like PayPal, ApplePay favours buyer, but asking for all these details is a big turn off for me. I wouldn't take the risk just to save $100 especially after Optus and Medibank accidents.

    • +1

I just paid with after-pay since there was no surcharge and paid it all off in one go.

    • Back in the good old days (say, mid-late 90’s), any PC gear bought over the phone or internet needed a visual inspection or photocopy etc of your CC & sometimes drivers license. So sketchy. But apparently, crime was rampant.

  • +2

Looks like $100 off is backed?

    • The terms and conditions of the coupon seem to have been updated: This offer commences at 00:00 (AEST) on 09 February 2023 and ends at 23:30 (AEST) on 19 February 2023 (“Offer Period”). Centre Com reserves the right to cancel the offer at any time.
