Building a PC for Torrenting (Linux ISOs) - Budget $1000

Hi,

If one were to build a PC specifically for torrenting (for legal things such as Linux ISOs…), what type of components might you recommend?

I would think 1-2 lower-RPM HDDs alongside a boot SSD would be good, but interested what other types of components would be worth considering. i.e. how much RAM, dedicated GPU or not, etc.

Interested in your thoughts.

    Raspberry Pi.

if it is going o be used just for torrenting and maybe running the 'arrs then a raspberry pi is really all you need (and storage obviously). very easy on the power bill

Yeah, you be surprised how much you crammed into a pi, I got following running as dockers for years without any issues, using 40% of its resources.

        httpd (small java app)
        qbittorrent
        rpl-mysql
        duckdns
        letsencrypt
        ldarr
        radarr
        sonarr
        pihole
        portaner
        private-internet-access
        homeassistant

Use SSD as a boot driver and got two WD external HD which set as NAS (samba share).

        • how highly specced pi did u get?

Connection speed is more important than anything else

      dedicated gpu to visualise speed

That reminds of this movie I saw about a bus that had to speed around a city, keeping its speed over fifty, and if its speed dropped, it would explode! I think it was called, 'The Bus That Couldn't Slow Down.'

          Bollocks.

          Or Bullocks

It's got that breathtaking guy in it

VM on your main PC. Seriously - it's just for torrenting.

    • not a good idea, PC has to be on all the time and consume too much power, you want low power device like Pi so it can be on 24/7

      • +1

How much power do you think a modern idling PC uses?

If power was the only key consideration then a seedbox in the cloud makes far more sense.

get a cheap Raspberry Pi plug in USB 2TB HDD
install Deluge, install the deluge web-gui, setup samba for file sharing

cheap to run, no noise, can hide it some were out of sight, everything can be done remotely via the web-gui and SSH

  • A $100ish raspberry pi would work running Transmission. If it’s just for “Linux ISOs”

  • Have you considered renting a virtual server?

    Some examples here…
    https://lowendtalk.com/discussion/171840/500gb-for-torrent-c…

    • or using oracle cloud free tier

      • Why would you do that, when trying to install your Linux ISOs you will be severely bottlenecked by your internet connection speed to the cloud server.

        • the question was about torrenting with another computer. downloading/uploading.
lets assume its for safety, security or privacy reasons (given he wants that seperation)
torrenting on a remote server means that you won't have to subject your main computer to the swarm, where everyone knows each other's IP endpoint.

using a cloud pc also means he can continuously upload while minimizing the impact on his home internet connection
im sure the OP will still transfer the completed linux iso over to use at home

  • Synology nas running a vpn client? Or am I missing something in that suggestion?

  • +1

I picked up a m700 tiny from a recent deal.

    Running a 1TB SATA and 1TB m.2 SATA, though you could easily install a 5TB 2.5"

  • I would make a nas with rss and automate it. Or you could get a seedbox.

You could make the nas for roughly $500 and it would have enough space in the case to add storage as you like.

    dedicated GPU or not

    Or not.

I can't imagine you'd need a dedicated GPU on a machine that you were using for just torrenting or even "just torrenting".

If you want a bit more power than a Raspberry Pi, or want to run Windows instead of linux, I would suggest using an old laptop with some external USB hard drives. You can buy a refurb off ebay if you don't have an old one lying around. You should be able to get 8TB of external storage for $250.

  • Why get a PC for this?

Just get a seedbox. You can watch the files directly off it as long as your client supports it.

does torrenting mean upload most of the time? if so, mff pc with ssd should be enough, because upload shouldn't wear down the TBW of ssd.

  • Cheap refurb Laptop or SFF computer, upgrade to ssd if needed, plus a BIG external drive or 2 for ISO storage. Plenty of deals on a regular basis on OzB.
Torrenting + VPN is very low horsepower.
My laptop N5030 runs win10H and multitasks VPN + downloads ISOs + VLC Movies no problems, and all those refurbs have more grunt than my laptop.
