These have been quite popular over the years and here's one for a low price beating Amazon where it's currently A$44.99. This device allows you to share 4 USB 3.0 peripherals like a printer, mouse, keyboard, USB flash drive etc. between two computers and switch between them with a press of a button.

I personally use mine at work to switch between my Windows desktop and my Mac so that I can use the same keyboard and mouse with both. Press the button once and it works with Windows, press it again and it works with Mac.

If you're wanting to run something that requires more power (e.g. an external HDD with a power adaptor) then there's a micro USB port on the back for connecting a charger.

Love mine when I need to work from home and switch webcam/mic. Not a fan of the 'illegal' USB-A to A cables they use though, since you basically can't find shorter/longer cables (would've been nice if it was USB-C on the switch itself).

    • USB-C certainly wasn't as mainstream as it is now when these came out like 3 years ago. AliExpress is full of USB-A to A cables at various lengths… like this listing

    • Illegal usb cables? Can't find shorter/longer lengths?

These are extremely basic and you can find them practically anywhere. You'll find them just typing it into google….

      • +6

        Illegal usb cables?

They are not compliant to the USB specification.

        Here's a good summary
        https://mobile.twitter.com/Foone/status/1448390609891258372

        • And the first reply immediately below shows that they are to USB specification if USB 3.1 (3.0).

          • +2

@Clear: Doesn't their table state that VBUS must be disconnected for those cables to be to spec? Which I don't think these are since they provide power.

            • +2

@CloudZero: Ok not so compliant then. I think the bigger crime is their butchering of the naming convention of everything past USB 3.0.

      • Ah yeah spaceflight pretty much has the explanation for them being 'illegal'. And yeah I realised I wasted trying to find them at JB and Officeworks when Amazon and Aliexpress have them for sale.

Put your hands up, this is the USB police!

  • Do they work with wireless keyboard/mouse?

    • Yes. Obviously you may get some interference due to the ports being USB 3.0.

      • Thanks, it didn't work on my old KVM, for some reason only wired USB worked.

      • +1

What does this mean? How does usb3 interfere with wireless?

        • +5

Intel released a white paper in 2012 proving that the noise from a USB 3.0 port can cause interference with a 2.4GHz device. So it's recommended that they be connected to USB 2.0 ports where possible (part of the reason USB 2.0 still exists).

These days a lot of manufacturer's add shielding to USB 3.0 ports minimise the noise and many never have issues.

          • +1

@Clear: Interesting, I didn't know that, thanks. So you're saying these usb3 ports in the hub are not shielded then?

    • I use mine to switch between WFH laptop and my PC with my wireless razer mouse, never had an issue.

    • Yes, I have seperate wireless asus mouse & keyboard dongles connected, they work fine switching between my home pc and work laptop

    • I have this. It works fine with my dell wireless mouse and logitech wireless keyboard..

  • +1

do these have the LED light "the wrong way around"?

the leds on the one I have are lit such that the active connection has the closest led switched off.

    • same, I used it and the led vs the usb cable are the opposite (left light on when the right cable is connected)

    • +1

They must have shipped you the left hand drive model by mistake.

  • +4

    Pretty good device.

I use mine connected to a laptop and desktop to switch the keyboard and mouse.

Not a KVM(Keyboard Video Mouse) though - I plan to eventually ControlMyMonitor this utility to trigger changing monitors to save having to manually switch inputs on my monitors. Initial testing has unfortunately resulted in display corruption for me.

    • +1

Ditto same setup with two machines made a .bat file though the controlmymonitor software to change inputs.
Significantly cheaper than a 3440x1440 165hz display port compatible KVM.

      • Same here, I've got monitors with audio out so sound switches over with the monitors. Really handy.

    • +1

I hooked up an arduino to a spare HDMI port on both my monitors, and switch the inputs based on which LED on the switch is lit up using DDC to control the monitors. Works great and is effectively a KVM with one button to switch between my laptop and PC

      • Great idea! Have you published your code somewhere?

    • As in your monitor is now broke and not recoverable? I've always wanted to find a software way but I imagine you can't do it unless you can install the software on both pcs (one of mine is a work laptop that I can't install software on).

      • +1

The monitor is fine - just switching using the program results in display corruption until power is cycled.

        It's only a problem with a Viewsonic VX2758-2KP-MHD.

    • I use this and a HDMI switch taped behind the edge of the monitor from the same manufacturer.

Lean forward and two clicks. Far cheaper than ful KVM.

  • This is an excellent switch for working from home to switch between my desktop and work laptop. Have had it for 2 years it’s very convenient, save the time from having to remove the mouse and keyboard

  • I've used the same one for over a year between 2 computers, it's been working great!

  • +1

Don't recommend it if you switch between computers often. Pressing the button over and over will drive you bananas. Find one with hotkey support, which allows you to switch using a command on your keyboard. I'll never buy a switch without hotkey support again.

    • +1

      WTF

      • +2

Pushing a button will drive you bananas, but pushing a hotkey won't apparently…

        • +1

Yeah, because my hands are already on the keyboard and not on the switch genius. Why do you think hotkey support was invented in the first place? If you switch a couple of times per day, whatever. Try 50 times a day.

      • I wonder why hotkey support was invented when I can keep slamming the switch on the desk. WTF indeed.

        • Please stop slamming the switch as it will you drive you bananas

      • Physical switch on the unit, not hotkey keyboard support.

    • can you recommend one with hotkey support?

  • Is there anything similar for USB C? I have a home desktop and Office laptop connected to a docking station and I want to switch between these 2. I can unplug the USB C of my docking station from the laptop and plug it into my desktop but is there any way to support both without unplugging it?

    • I currently do this. My dock has a USB C to USB A adapter attached to it. Then I connect that to the front USB port of this device. Also pushes video and ethernet on the dock as well. The rear USB goes to the laptop and PC respectively.

      • Good solution, but I don't think that will do Power Delivery on the USB A ports.

        • +1

Yeah, I've got a separate power supply just for the laptop.

  • Great device, use it to connect my mouse, KB and gaming headset when wfh to minimize multiple peripherals on the table when switching from work laptop to gaming pc

  • It's not a KVM switch if it doesn't switch video, so calling it a sharing switch is appropriate.

    Disappointing to spot micro-USB still.

    • Add a $16 monitor switch and you are pretty.much there though for cheap.

  • If you just want to use this with a mouse and keyboard have a look at https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=354…

    Or Logitech Flow

    • Okay if you have 2 displays working independently.

I use my PC monitor as extended monitor for laptop, so software based solution doesn't work.

  • oooh. i didn't notice the little USB at the back! I'll have to see if mine has it

  • A shared 4 port USB3 Hub

  • Anyone know whether this will play nice with audio interfaces?

    • Works fine with my Logitech G930 dongle. So not much interference.

  • When you turn on only one PC, does it automatically switch to that PC? And if you have two PCs running and turn one off, does it automatically switch to the PC that is still turned on?

    • +1

      No to both your questions

    • +1

The hub would default to USB upstream 1 when turned on every time even if you switched to USB upstream 2 before you turn power off to the hub. So make sure you connect your preferred host machine to USB upstream 1.

      • I use this to my advantage. Don't want the screen coming on if the computer is woken accidentally while I'm away.

  • I use this for WFH, it's underpowered even with a 2A power adaptor. I have wired kb, wireless mouse, microphone, webcam connected. The USB hub will disconnect reconnect a few times per minute when the webcam is in use.

    • Don't have this issue but i have 1 device less, no mic. But i did have to try different usb ports on my desktop as it supplies less power than my laptop. I don't use supplementary power.

    • Interesting, I've never had an issue. I have mine connected to keyboard, wireless mouse, mic and USB DAC. My webcam I plugged straight into the laptop cause it's for WFH only.

    • Like others, I don't have this issue as well. I have my keyboard, audioengine speakers (self powered), DAC/AMP (self powered) and Logi StreamCam connected to it. Maybe my desktop's USB port has sufficient power output. I also have the hub's USB power input connected to my docking station (for work) but I turn it off after working hours so it should not be supplying power to the hub.

    • I have this and use it with a microphone, webcam, charging a wireless keyboard, and charging a wireless mouse, and have never had an issue like that

  • logitech mx keys and mouse gives you 3 computers without any cable mess. Logitech Connect+ lets you bind keys to bats for switching monitor via ControlMyMonitor

    • This gives you 4 devices, i use it to swap webcam. Also i rather use my nice mechanical keyboard than mx keys.

  • it works i've got one, works as expected

only issue is the button being on the device instead of having a button on a 'remote' cable

if you want this on your desk so you can actually push the button without hassle, then you also need to route up to 6 usb cables that are also just chilling on your desk instead of leaving it in a cable management tray or at least on the floor

    • only issue is the button being on the device instead of having a button on a 'remote' cable

Instead of a remote button find one that works from a keyboard shortcut

  • I’ve got one of these. It stopped working after a couple of months. Won’t buy again.

    • I did have one die after 11 months. But Amazon just swapped it. Replacement has been working well for almost 2 years. For the price can't complain.

  • -2

I had one of these, very unreliable (constantly dropping out and delayed inputs from keyboard) and probably won't last longer than 2 years.

You would be much better off spending the money on a good quality monitor that has a KVM feature in-built.

Plus nobody likes running extra cables everywhere.

  • I've used one for a few years and can't fault it. solid build and works well.

  • Best thing to have since WFH was a thing. I have a dock, which does ethernet, video and audio, connecting to the front of this. Then the rear connects to PC and work laptop. Though the video is mainly used for the laptop. I connected the second port of each monitor directly to the PC to make the most of PC's graphics card. It does make switching between the two a breeze.

  • This is a far better USB3 switch: https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B083JKDNRJ/ref=ppx_yo_d…

    Costs $80 though.

    • In what way is that better? USB-C adapter?

      • Supports 4 computers, has a remote for switching and a USB-C adapter if you have a computer, like a Macbook with USB-C.

        • so to make use of it properly I need to buy another two computers I think

  • Have had one for the past two years and it hasn't skipped a beat! Use it to switch my mouse, microphone, keyboard and capture card between my work and personal devices. Paid a higher price on Amazon but better than plugging/unplugging cables all the time ¯_(ツ)_/¯.

    • ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯

  • Great device. I use this plus a DisplayPort switch as a two button KVM.

< $100 for a G-Sync compatible KVM is amazing value for the price of two button pushes.

    • Which displayport switch do you use?

      • It was this one, currently unavailable unfortunately. But looks like the same model is available elsewhere. It was $38.99 when I bought it in 2021.

  • I bought this during covid lock down and it still works very well today. The switch is also quick, take 2 seconds to change over.

It can support multiple more power hungry devices. I have a razer chroma keyboard, ps4 controller, a video cam, a USB extension that has a USB DAC and wireless mouse dongle connected. So 5 devices all up with no external power required.

  • Is there any similar to this with audio as well @Clear?

    • What does your audio play through?

      • 3.5mm

  • Great device, I use mine to switch between home desktop and WFH laptop. Have a Mic, Webcam, Wireless mouse dongle and keyboard plugged in. Has worked flawlessly for months :)
