Is $443 Reasonable to Replace a Gas Bayonet on The Wall inside The House?

Hi just looking for an opinion as to if $443 is a reasonable price to change a faulty gas bayonet on the wall?

The guy came and spent about 25 mins to find the fault and all up he is out of my dad's house in just under 1 hour. A new gas bayonet is supplied by him with labour.

I thought it was on the high end but I haven't had anything replaced yet in the house so no idea what the chargers are like?

Thanks

Did you not agree to a cost beforehand?

My dad is old, he didn't know the cost after the guy came and did the check as he didn't know where the gas leak was from initially. The reason I am asking is if the price is reasonable, I might keep the tradesmen's number for future use

  • So how much do you think is reasonable?

Ps if you say $30-50 I am going to laugh

    • I think anything below $300 is reasonable, however like I said as long as the $443 is the normal rate I be happy to use him in the future.

  • If it was an emergency/short notice, then yes it's reasonable.

If it was organised in advance and agreed to on price i'd say ~$270-$300 would be reasonable. ~$130 an hour x 2 (including travelling to site) and maybe $25 for the fitting.

    • Pre-book this one, 3 days in advance in fact. He is on salary as he said to my dad. Not working for himself for sure.

Gas bayonet is $25 retail, and a stock item in the van. A small job like that should be under $200 callout plus labour.

A salaried plumber is on $80k/year average, but finding a gas leak and replacing a connector is beginner-level.

    • Sounds like my dad paid too high a price then. Might avoid this company in the future.

Unfortunately, it is not unusual if you don't ask a price in advance. That is the attitude of some trades in Australia.

        • Only if he knew where the leak comes from. Anyway won't be using them again. Thanks

@Aerith-Waifu: Generally leak detection would result in a higher rate given they'd more than likely need to use leak detection equipment, or their nose.
Which may be backed up from snorting to much cocai…

  • Is your dad in Perth? I feel like $443 is more Sydney or Melbourne prices.

Uh big mistake, we live in a country where plumbers are paid over $100 an hour. At least $300 to fix

  • Just get Russian gas bottles. Supporting a cause of your choice?

  • Plumbers should wear a highway robbers mask, so it just caps off the “being robbed” feeling.

Last plumber I had out was here for about 10 mins cost me $160. He said that was their standard “call out fee”. Was not explained this on the phone and said that next time I won’t call them out, I’ll just wait for them to magically appear.

I think they charge stupid prices because they basically have you at gunpoint. They tear all your shit apart then them give you a stupid quote to fix the issue and you either have to pay them to clean up the mess they made or get someone else in to do it.

And $400+ for a gas fitting is extortionist pricing. It was probably $10 for the fitting and an hours round trip from their workshop and 15 mins to replace the fitting.

And who is voting “yes, it’s reasonable “? The plumbers union must have a lobby group doing their upvoting for them.

    • I think this is pretty much standard for all trades. I'm looking at getting a 7kw aircon installed back to back on single story house and everyone wants $850-$900.

      • Yeah the installation costs on split systems is crazy high. Most will only install their own supplied units too.

  • Perhaps a detailed Price Breakdown would help here. Too may variables and guessing to say.
What was the wording of the Callout in the first instance? Photo to show exact bayonet location and style of structure?
Were the issues from OE or Installation?
Some trades charge too much but are ok on parts, others the opposite and some high end on both.
Why am I asking these questions when I do not know how much a Plumber/Gas Fitter chargers in the first place?

But I am an Autogas Installer, and often I see very difficult old / not normal leaks…a bugger to isolate.
